I just watched the entire show for the first time ever in 2024 after spending my whole life thinking it would be dumb and I’d hate it… man was I wrong. I’ve lived and breathed Desperate Housewives every minute of every day for the last 3 weeks 😭 genuinely one of the best shows EVER made!

The interview scene is nearly beat for beat and word for word how the Hutton/Rubirosa wedding actually unfolded in 1953 at the Hotel Pierre in NYC. It is an amalgam of two moments from that day, the actual wedding ceremony and the press briefing, but looking at the real life videos and pictures from that day (search on youtube: "barbara hutton rubiosa wedding"), the scene is identical, down to the couch, the painting, the blocking, the son Cal (Lance in real life), Barbara's constant drunkeness, the Martinis on the table, the questions about Dominican marriage law (in real life, Rubirosa's lawyer Rosenberg responded to those questions, echoing what is mentioned in the movie), and yes, even the accusations of war profiteering (Rubirosa really did sell Dominican visas to Jews for personal profit, but because he was a diplomat he was untouchable), and especially the dress. Also, with the marriage, Barbara Hutton became Barbara Rubirosa, and 'Rubirosa' can be playfully interpreted as 'Red Rose', so in real life, Barbara Hutton truly did become 'Barbara Rose', so to speak. And 'Rubio' is obviously a thinly-veiled interpretation of 'Rubirosa'. P.T. Anderson clearly aimed to make it very apparent who and what he was drawing inspiration from. Fascinating!

Harriet Harris absolutely nailed portraying a stumbling wreck of a person. There are so many shifting, rapid fire micro expressions of different emotions, her doped up forgetfulness, her 6:27 constantly being on the edge of bursting into tears... She makes Barbara Rose so uncomfortable to be around, both pitiable and disgustingly pathetic. Harris is so good in this short role that it really stays with me. I feel so sad for her, especially knowing she was based on a real woman.

Skvělý herecký výkon pana Hanzlíka. Jinak co se týče příběhu, který se jeví jako velmi smutný o tom jak hlavímu hrdinovi "spravedlnost" zašmodrchala život, tak bych úplně nepodléhal tomu, že mu život zničilo jen to, že svědčil u soudu. Když se nad tím člověk zamyslí, tak jak ve filmu je jasně znázorněno, že často sází sportku, úspory nemá žádné, dluží na nájmu 50 litrů, neplatií za elektřinu a plyn a to oba vydělávali. A na to, že oboum manželům je přes 50 cca, tak žijí v nájmu, takže ani za celou dobu v době manželství se nezmohli na vlastní bydlení a nenašetřili nic. Dále, jak již hlavní hrdina zmínil, tak dceři je 22 a pracovala v nemocnici, tudíž i dcera vydělávala a jí živit nemuseli. A stejně oba manželé neměli žádné úspory, takže museli celou dobu hodně špatně finančně hodpodařit, takže hlavní hrdina si podle mně za to z velké části může sám. A ta epizoda s tím soudem to mi přišla spíš taková poslední kapka a ne úplně hlavní důvod proč se dostal kam se dostal. Těch problémů už zřejmě měl spoustu před soudem, jelikož díky jeho nezodpovědnosti jak jsem již výše psal měl spoustu dluhů a vůli s tím něco dělat neměl. Takže dříve nebo později by se v této situaci podle mně hlavní hrdina se stejně ocitnul.
