Yes, they want you to work for free and they don't want you pointing that fact out AND they also want to make that carrot that's being dangled in front of you sound so amazingly good that all impulses will make you jump at it and forget the supremely vague terms they used of "Maybe, Potentially, and possibly leads to promotion with zero pay interim" and just say yes I'll be stupid and take the spot before you realize they will be able to pull the rug out from under you.

I get paid for my time working. No pay, no work. This is exactly why I don’t keep any work stuff on my personal cell phone. They did try to have us install proprietary stuff on our phones though… it was a hell nah from me. I pay for my phone and will not have anything I don’t know on it. I don’t know the tracking capabilities or what the software does in the background as far as data collection.

This is why labor unions are so important. I worked for a delivery company that requested workers use their personal phones at work to let supervisors know if we would be late, where we were at specific times, call customers, call other delivery people and more. I would tell them they had not provided me with a phone with which to do that. They said to use a pay phone. I said I would need to be given money for the pay phone. It meant a lot of paperwork just to give me 50 cents as I stood there waiting. Pay phones got harder and harder to find. It was faster just to go back to the office. Finally, they stopped this practice. I had my personal phone with me the whole time, but only for my convenience. If I became involved with an accident, breakdown, or crime my phone was there, for me not for them. Union backed me every time.

This is two things in one. Sometimes your company is trying to strong arm you into being available. Sometimes it's just for compliance so they can show that they retain/delete/protect communications and all communications happen on compliant devices and systems

The parts I appreciate most are teaching where the boundaries are and demonstrating how to approach problems. I kept a tablet for extra 'asks' that I could complete inside my hours. When my list was full, I'd list these 'asks' and ask what to remove to take on the new one.

So I will be leaving that cell phone here on Friday at 5:00 and I'll retrieve it Monday morning when I come in at 9:00. And I'll leave it in my desk between the hours of 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 or 9:00 a.m. it is the company's property and I would not want to take it away from the company.

Normalize refusing to do above and beyond work for periods of unspecified time for the allure of a chance of a promotion. Nope, set clear criteria and if I meet it at an agreed upon deadline then I am entitled to a compensation increase that was agreed upon. If they get to pay up time then I leave with no notice.

You know they are left with the option of hiring someone outside of the company, paying them right away with managerial pay, without that employee having to prove themselves first.

Everyone I know who had work phones was allowed to use their work phones for whenever they wanted to.
