How to Cut Evenly Across Multiple Metal Pieces - Kevin Caron
After building the 9-foot-tall, 5 "branch" stand for his sound sculpture Vine, artist Kevin Caron creates the 5 bells for it. (Don't miss the Shorts on how he makes the bells!) The last step is using a horizontal bandsaw to cut off the bells to the same length, which is the focus of this video.
Artist Kevin Caron has been sculpting full time since 2006. See - and hear - his amazing metal and large format 3D-printed sculptures, which are found in public and private places coast-to-coast and online at www.kevincaron.com.

    I agree with the prior posts- THANK YOU!! Just had to MIG tack weld some 16ga cold roll sheets together, laying a tack every inch or so, just to keep it from warping. Hoping I can blend the two sheets at the butt weld with the TIG. And now I know! So thank you again. Much love from Texas ❤

    when clamping to the workpiece, how far should it be from the spot you're welding?

    • @KevincaronSculpture
      @KevincaronSculpture Před 20 dny

      Great question!! Closer to the weld is better. But not so close that it is in the way.

  • @DivineMisterAdVentures

    Prevention is 9/10ths the Rule. Do a little study on heat control. You can use a heatsink (clamp to a 1" thick slab or table), you can pre-heat the part in an oven or using a torch (400F for 1/2 hour), Avoid continuous welds (spot weld here, cool, spot weld there, cool, etc.) You can also use low-temperature flame (brazing) - which will add interest to art (it's beautiful), or even very low temp alumina fill. Oh yeah - and clamp with a reverse bow along the axis by putting a penny under it. I'm getting so damn smart. (not so much.)

      @@KevincaronSculpture Thanks for replying, Kevin! You've introduced me to a rabbit hole I didn't know about, so now I have to learn about their gel versus liquid, and figure out how to apply it to the sculptures I do so it actually looks like nature's own colors. You do have to shoot it with a clear coat right away. That will keep the flash rust from starting. I have done a couple of pieces with SteelFX for outside. One is still going strong but the other one, I think the clear I put on it failed. Or I just didn't shoot it correctly.

    I’d be nervous that my first cut was not level, or I’d not accounted for how I placed the laser. I have an oscillating laser level that’s self levelling and sits upon a tripod which you can wind up or down for precise measurements. You can hire these and would have been my preferred choice. However the method shown seemed to work fine.

This solution contains 5% to 10% Ammonium hydroxide is used as a refrigerant gas because ammonia absorbs heat from its surroundings.
