    The thing I don't understand is why we don't have the official KDE and Gnome versions of OpenBSD. Why do we have to build them on our own? This process can be too much for the end user. The same thing goes for live versions. The official ISO should support live so OS enthusiasts can try it with Ventoy USB and install it whenever they want.

      OpenBSD philosophy is based on security first. I assume auditing a codebase as large as KDE or Gnome requires much more resources. The community is small. I would even say it is shrinking. So auditing a large DE is not very doable. Therefore, any WM/DE besides CWM is shipped in ports. If OpenBSD had a community as large as Linux, this issue would have been solved easily by having different OpenBSD flavors (similar to a Linux distro). We can criticize OpenBSD for not having X and Y. The thing is given its small community, they focus only on what's crucial for them. In the case of live CD, probably the core team didn't see the need to support and the community didn't have enough interest in it. This could be a good and a bad thing at the same time. It increases the barrier to new users and enthusiasts, yet, on the other hand, encourages end users to be hands-on. The concept of if you want it and doesn't exist, why not get started and make it happen? Note that one doesn't need to build KDE or Gnome on OpenBSD. They can be installed via package manager easily. Of course, the option of building them from scratch is also there.

      @@TheOpenBSDguywhy shrinking?

    • @TheOpenBSDguy
      @TheOpenBSDguy Před měsícem

      @@rpx8787 - I think the reason is mainly because Linux gets a lot of attention, especially from big corporations who invest heavily in it. As a result, BSDs tend to struggle with limited funding and support for things like drivers and software. This puts them at a bit of a disadvantage compared to other popular operating systems. Understandably, most folks prefer an OS that's fully equipped and easy to use, rather than one where getting things up and running can be a real challenge.

    This was interesting. I always thought about trying SSH & X11 forwarding on VMM "some day" but that day didn´t arrive. IDK if that was even possible but this I now know work at least. Thanks for sharing! My main reason for running Linux on my work laptop is that I need to have Anydesk or Teamviewer with me (because users). To be honest I also need a laptop to also be able to automatically switch from suspend to hibernation after some time because weekends vs battery and my brain´s randomizing features of memory. Unrelated fact: There are very few distro´s that does "hibernation after sleep". If you are lazy and want it simple, Manjaro with KDE and OpenSuse leap KDE is the only two that does this with stability. Basically you need a swap partition larger than RAM, and KDE then has a GUI setting for it. And you need to sacrifice to the SystemD gods too and hope they didn´t randomly break this feature on your distro. And I guess you also want to have a "real" ThinkPad too, as usual.

    • @michaelheimbrand5424
      @michaelheimbrand5424 Před měsícem

      @@TheOpenBSDguy Yep. It can very much be a pain. Redhat and the Systemd people thinks that hibernation is bad. Therefore they killed it a few versions ago and people who objected to it simply got "well use sleep then, problem solved". They might as well have recommended a banana or something. But fingers crossed, My OpenSUSE Leap with KDE on my 2020 Thinkpad T15 has been alright for over a year now. At this point I almost wonder if they rolled back systemd´s hibernation after sleep. I mean that´s a function that has been fundamental and default in Windows and MacOS since forever now. Removing it from Linux takes their precious market share back I guess.

    • @TheOpenBSDguy
      @TheOpenBSDguy Před měsícem

      I guess a major part of it is VMM limitation. It runs on a single CPU core only and is not possible to allocate more CPUs to the VM. To run Linux programs and games at native speed, besides that GPU pass-through has to be added to VMM. Another idea (at least in theory) is to port FreeBSD Linux emulator to OpenBSD. How the code is tangled with kernel and all, I have no idea

    Isn't it a bit wasteful to copy the entire base set into a folder just to run one application? Also, doing MAKEDEV in a user controlled directory seems unsafe. Can't you just copy some bits from your system into the chroot, and then use ldd to see what libraries the chroot needs, and then just use that? Basically craft a chroot jail for the application instead of a complete system?

    • @TheOpenBSDguy
      @TheOpenBSDguy Před 2 měsíci

      Depends on how you see it. On the one hand, it's a waste of disk space copying the whole base to create a chroot, especially if the application is small. On the other hand, setting up a chroot with a whole system could save some troubleshooting time in case of complex applications. For me, it's mainly to have something similar to a VMM (but lightweight). On running MAKEDEV in user space, I don't know about the implications. Is there any resource I can read more about it? Theoretically speaking, the ldd approach should work. That's the standard approach in Linux. Though, I haven't tried it yet on OpenBSD. It's on my todo list.

    Would you prefer CDE or NsCDE and why?

      @TheOpenBSDguy Před 2 měsíci

      I don't use any of them. I made both videos because many viewers asked me to showcase how to install them. From the security standpoint, however, NsCDE is a better choice since it's not using outdated libraries, and seems to be more maintained. Additionally, NsCDE has better compatibility with modern-day applications in terms of look and feel. On the other hand, according to CDE users, NsCDE is still missing some features and is not a drop and replacement of CDE. To them, it's more like a customized FVWM made to look like CDE. Again I don't use any of those desktop and have not much of familiarity with them. My go to WM is i3

    Can you make more videos about the security features of OpenBSD? Besides the ones you have made videos about I mean.

    • @TheOpenBSDguy
      @TheOpenBSDguy Před 2 měsíci

      I will make. I'd love to. But the thing with security videos is that they take a lot of time to prepare and produce and unfortunately, they are not that popular.

      @@TheOpenBSDguy honestly I think they would be more popular if people were to make them because there is such little information out that that is easily digestible(like your videos). Shit I’d even be willing to donate some money.

    Thanks for a good video about the best OS in history. There are a sea of Linux related videos being released daily, but none even mention OpenBSD.

      BSD's have become the new niche, just like Linux was 15 years ago. Now Linux is increasing in popularity and BSD's are the "underground" community.
