Opening up the DM02 and TSDZ2 mid-drives After I rode 400 kms with the DM02 on the trike, I re-installed the TSDZ2 for 75kms before confirming that I would install the DM02 permanently. Sept. 2023 Took time to open up both mid drives before finally installing the DM02 on the Trike. This is an overview of upgrades to my ICE Adventure 2fs recumbent trike. Including the Why I replaced the Tongsheng TSDZ2 with the DM002 from ToSeven. Trike Spec 2010 ICE Adventure 2fs 20" wheels, full suspension, drum brakes, folding Rear Hub is a Enviolo/NuVince 380 hub 20T cog 500w 48v DM002 mid-drive from ToSeven, with 34T-48T Chainrings. Removable 48v 14amp battery, with 2170 cell.

      if you do not need a throttle, the DM02 has more then enough power for my trike and my style of riding. In Canada the Max Legal power on a E-Bike/Trike is 500 watts, speed is 32km.

      @@ericfleetwood6744 no I used it on a Scott sub sport 30. It’s a great kit and the most difficult part of the install was protecting the cables/hose under the bottom bracket from being trapped by the motor.

    Thank you for the video. Really nice trike and nice work. I recently picked up a TerraTrike Rogue recumbent. It has the Enviolo City Hub and comes with a 42t drive ring and 20" tires. It is not that fast of a ride but I can maintain a good cadence and have been able to pedal up the hills I've encountered. My DM02 kit, from California E-bikes, arrives tomorrow.. I had to make a guess on the drive ring, so I ordered the 42t to "match" the 42t it came with. If I think I can get away with a larger drive ring after riding it, I'll order one. Although I think the 42t might be a good match for the City hub, and maybe a little easier on the motor, albeit at the expense of a little top end speed. The hub is rated for 50nm of torque continuous and 75nm maximum, so I think the DM01 might smoke the hub over time. Envilio says that the City hub is good with motors up to 250 watts. I see that you dropped your power setting to 350 watts due to over heating issues. I will have to see if I have to do the same, or may even start of withit set to 350. I may post a video after I install it and get a ride under my belt.

    I had sold & installed the original TSDZ2's for about 5 or more years with very few problems. When the B version came out we had several complaints about how under powered it was. Then we started seeing lots of posts about problems with the various OSF mods people were doing so we stopped selling them. I am curious to know if overall the Toseven in 500 watt /48 volt is improved enough to consider carrying them.

    I'm really curious about the fit of the bearings. I have 2 tsdz2 running at 11amps i think. So 370 watts about. One had water ingress imediately (replaced the controller)now crazy noisy due to corrosion inside. The other had bad creaking bb (still has 2000km later). Is the toseven more serious on the fit of bearings and waterproofing?

      My DM02 was a little noisy for the first couple 100km after it was broken in it quieted down. There is a moulded rubber seal around the wires, and in general has better weather proofing. No mid-drive is waterproof.

    Great video. Thanks for doing this. Got a question for you. I really dislike motor noise so with my current motor ( bbs02 ) 95% of the time I never hear the motor. Last year I tried the Tongsheng and found the whinny motor noise was so unpleasant I sold it after 1 month. How would you compare the DM01 motor noise to the tongsheng? BTW - I have the bbs02 installed on my ti-fly X so the motor noise comparison would be similar since you are on a trike.

    3:03 - Did you know that if you limit charging to below 100% you also disable balancing of the cells? 99% of BMS in batteries start balancing procedure once each cell reaches ~4.2V. Soon or later your cells will be terribly unbalanced! That's worse that typical degradation cased by full charge cycle (0%-100%) .

    I have a Enviolo 380 and a Sturmey Archer 5 speed. Really like the Sturmey Archer 5 speed, but do not like the Enviolo 380. Seems like the Enviolo is very inefficient. Plus the bike it is on is very heavy. Please talk about the Toseven DM02 more.

      The weight is not really a problem on the Trike. Enviolo is inefficient at the high and low end, but I like no stepped shifting and micro shifting to match my cadence. The S&A 8 speed is so fast on a 20" wheel. 44+ km/hr chasing down a carbon racer 😆 More DM02 is in the work with the new firmware, and my setting, likes & dislikes.

    For the speed sensor: place some thick rubber (cut from say a handle bar clamp seal/rubber) under the sensor mount where it attached to the frame and push it closer to your wheel. I used a piece of rubber that had ridges along its perimeter (for the handle bar clamp to sit within) that worked perfectly. It was ~3/8" thick.

      👍I have used that solution on other bike builds, Stacking two magnets on the spoke, was a simpler and faster for me and has worked for 3000+km

    I am looking at getting the 2Seven 500 watt, probably running it at 350 watt most of the time for even more efficiency. I might regret it if I am hauling too much weight, but I have always been able to get around pushing weight even without a motor, so going conservative should fit in my range.

      The DM02 500w 48v push me and trike @ total 245+ lbs, easily, using less than 200 watts, @ 30+ kph, It's a bit of a workout for me, but that is what I like about Torque sensing, I get a workout and greater range.

      @@hisforhack Oh it calibrates automatically using less than the full 500 watts, and with you working out, it will on average use about 200 watts, unless of course you need to go up some monster hill, or some other big pull. I was thinking 500 watts all the time, but it only uses what it needs. Makes it even better. Of course if I get sick, I can override the torque sensing, and just let the motor do it all, but I am not going to give up the only gym I have, my bicycle, so I especially favor the torque sensing. I am thinking of putting the 42 tooth sprocket on it they have as a standard choice. I had considered a 34 tooth so I could ride home easier if my motor gave way, but with an 11-46 rear sprocket I could get home even if I had to walk up hills. A smaller front sprocket could take away from a lot of efficiency at higher speeds, and I might even want to consider their 48 tooth, but we have some pretty big hills where we live in Spokane WA USA.     It looks like you have plenty of clearance there on your BB... I'm looking at using one of these for my wife's bike, but it's a 46mm/pf30 setup (I'd use a fsa-bsa solid fsa adapter). I think a bsa is 34mm ID.. Do you think there's at least 6mm clearance between your bb and the motor housing? That'd be about the difference I'm looking at on the radius for clearance.. Thank you for any insight!

    I have both motors as well. I haven’t installed the DM02 yet. I’ve had the original Tongsheng for years and use it every workday (even in the cold winters). I’ve never had a problem with it.

      The DM02 runs a lot cooler, I had to replace the torque sensor coil on the TSDZ2 after 3000km, I have 500kms on it stock TSDZ2 and 3700kms with the OSF installed, over 4000km total. The DM02 firmware needs some work, but mechanically I think it is better engineered then the TSDZ2

    How did you install the chainrings - Is the original chainring mount compatible with BCD110 or BCD130 chainrings?

      The DM02, DM01 and the TSDZ2 use BCD110 chainrings. The DM02 42T chainring has a 10mm offset to improve the chain line, the TSDZ2 has 5mm offset. I replaced the original DM02 42T "chain guard" with a standard 48T chainring and the DM02 42T chainring with a small 34T chainring, and used the original bolts. I can hand bomb the chain between the 48T and 34T if needed (never needed to) Remember because of the Enviolo IGH and the long chain on the Trike I do not have chain line problems you may get on a bike with a derailleur. I have some drive train changes coming for the spring, Snowed today

    Thank you H is for Hack! You answered my questions about the viability of the DM02 vs the DM01 and the Tongshen (mainly whether the DM02 has viable heat management, or do I have to resort to the bigger heavier more $$ DM01). I prefer the smaller size/lighter DM02.

      I bought the DM02 because it is legal in Canada, at 500 watts, 32 kmh. It is more than capable of pushing the trike and me to 44+ kmh on the flat. I don't see a need for 1000 watts.

      The DM02 is presently on the trike, The TSDZ2 was derated to 350w (Heat), so was slower but had a little more range. The DM02 still had about 100km range with a 48v 14amphr battery and was faster. Video come on the DMO2 range, Still below 0c here, when the weather warms I plan to testing a new 8 speed IGH, Grin Tech CA3, torque sensor and Hub motor. Retest TSDZ2 and DM02 at rated 48v 500w.

    Wow, great information! I really appreciate the comparison with the tzd2. The dm02 is new to me but it looks like the way to go on account of the heat issue and the improved sprag clutch. It's a gorgeous town that i don't recognize. Looks like great riding there.

      It is a vinyl coated Fence post bracket around the boom bolted to the Motor

    Other videos have shown the DM01 to come with extra long cables. If it is the same for the DM02, did you need extension cables for installation on a trike or were the factory cables long enough? I found the factory TSDZ2B motors to be extremely low on power since they made the design changes & will be switching to the DM02 kits as I am not interested in the reliability problems many people are having with the OSF modifications.

      The cable on my DM02 were extra long. I did need an extension display to move it to the left side steering. The speed cable was long enough to reach the front wheel.
