What Mega Man Zero FAILED to Do...
After stealing the spotlight in the Mega Man X series, Zero finally got his own game! Released for the Game Boy Advance in 2002, Mega Man Zero is yet another take on the franchise's side-scrolling action, but suffice it to say I have some issues with this one. From what I understand, Keiji Inafune always envisioned Zero becoming the main character over X. That's why the timeline and circumstances surrounding Zero's hibernation was weird. The intent was to make a different game, a different Zero. Ideally, X6 wouldn't have even come to pass if Inafune had his way, so that resulted in the need for more story shenanigans. For me, I just wish the transition wasn't so harsh given how great the X series was (which apparently Inafune came to loathe a bit because of X's popularity). The lore would have been much more impactful imo if we actually got to experience any of it.

I always had to slice bosses in half when this game was new! I guess I did that self imposed challenge run the first couple times I played. No other weapon was as versatile or got as many moves as the sabre, so I didn't even give them a second look until maybe my 5th or 6th playthrough.

6:42 - Can I just say how ripped off I felt when I got the Fire chip for beating the factory guardian (a boss that fights using all four in-game elements in a set cycle) rather than the train engine (who primarily goes at you with a huge flamethrower while herding you with rising piston-spiked ceiling platforming antics)?

I can't shake the feeling you'll be going over the sequels as some point so I'll try not to dwell too much on them. The MMZ series is bt far my all time favorite Megaman series. I use to do no hit runs in it when I was younger. That said, as many comments have pointed to... The only systems I disliked were the Ranking system and Cyber Elf Penalty. It felt very weird that the game penalized you for using permanent upgrade elves. I get they they did it but it felt forced. The Ranking system felt arbitrary and pointless. If the game's were meant to be hard (Souls-ish before Souls was a thing) then the bosses should have ALWAYS been going at the player 100% of the time impo. That said. I still love the narrative and the irony of how everything Zero has been an foil to Capcom. Megaman X was always meant to be Zero, but Capcom lacksd faith in the 'Horned Character' design, felt he looked too 'evil' and that fans would reject him. So Megaman got shoehorned in and Zero became the side character in his own game (of sorts). But the second Zero appeared, he stole fans hearts. As a result, Megaman ultimately started to feel like the side character in his own games while Zero became the main character. Moving to MMZ, X was meant to be the original X, creating a heart wrenching twist. However I LOVED the duality of it... X a creation of Dr. Light, the upgrade to Megaman who destroyed Wily's robots, robots who he started to make evil from the onset, finally after so long succumbs to the world and turns evil. While Wily's masterpiece would start evil and uktimately became a force of good and destroy Light's. It was...so tragic, so very poetic. Instead, Capcom caved at the last possible moment and created the cop-out; Copy X. And in a repeat of history. The story of Cooy X became more interesting, intriguing, and captivating than the original X's story. It's endlessly funny and interesting with how everything Zero related just defies Capcom. I feel like the CEO of Capcom secretly resents Zero with every molecule of his being.

If you play 2 series long enough, you can see that both series have "preserved ability" from previous game X series is dash in X1, it preserve to X2, and the air dash in X2 preserved to X4, Force Armor preserved to X5, Falcon Armor preserved to X6.... In Zero series, it still the same, but more "lore accurate" (or not) Z1 Zero is awakened, but he can't remember anything, so he need to train his skill, that's why we got the "level up" mechanic, which is the worst one Z2 preserved the skills from Z1, this game introduce the "form" mechanic, which is very weird but it fun to try, and he has addition skills for each form Z3 preserved the "form" from Z2, but only use for elemental, this game have something different, we got chips and skill which is from the defeating bosses, the condition is that you need to have lvl A or above Z4 preserved the "chips" in Z3, but some changes like the body chip mechanic, skill conditions and cyber elfs, in this point, Zero mastered all of his skills, but some weird mechanic is got bosses skill when change the weather to their benefit environment, level up cyber elfs and find part to unlock body abilities and about level system...if you're suck, you can't get anything, but when you're skilled enough, you can get anything Each series have their good and bad, don't just play one game and judge the other gane, it is not the same if you want to create a content like that, you must play all games from that series, not play one game and judge the others like that ok?

  • @emishimaru-sama6449

8:30 If I remember correctly, this Is actually more absurd than "just killing them". I think on each levels It requires you to kill them "In a specific way"? Could be wrong but, In the case of the final level of Z-Saber where you unlock the rolling dash that lets you dash Infinitely while rolling, you need to defeat monsters with a dash attack multiple times? Something like that... >.>

I was hesitant to watch this at first, because I was expecting another *spend 2/3 of the video summarizing the plot, then complain about how hard the game is for the rest of the video*, but to my surprise, it was all gameplay discussion. I don't think I've seen someone do this since Sequelitis, and I've been hungry for more type of content like that since. So I'm looking highly forward to when you cover the rest of the Zero and potentially ZX series.

No id a bad game, the rewards are cheap, the attacks are weak and short ranged, it takes away the important skills and abilities and adds things that does not work well, this game rides on the fame of the old ones, some soundtracks are good others are tedious, the grinding is tedious, the enemies are tedious, the exploration is not worth it, the whole game is an extremely water down version of the mega man series, the only cyber elfs that really matter are the ones that put zero as close as possible to the real zero and the player gets penalized for that and making the player die to learn is super meta and it super monorails, it forces the player to play certain specific ways and takes away nearly all options in combat and when it repeats it repeats boring things that seems to be its main theme... and that not even close to half, If I knew how this game was I would not have touched it, buying each megaman zero was a disappointment after another, the whole series was nothing but literal rip-offs. (Edit: It fails to do everything.)

my biggest issue with the megaman zero games was how much they focused on the ranking system. that added nothing besides loads of reload for stuff that, most of the time, were pretty useless when trying to a-s rank some of the missions anyway. it made an already hard and skill intensive game feel even worse. the irony is, the zero games were far harder to do well than even some of the megaman games themselves. specially the X games, outside of very specific maps like in x6, were far easier to get by fast and taking minimal damage. this to me, was always one of the things that made me stop and just not want to replay the zero games. as i couldnt be bothered to retry the same mission 5-10 times to "perfect it".

Fantastic video! The Zero series is one of my favorites, and replaying it this past year went surprisingly smooth. I knew generally how to circumvent Zero 1's... older qualities, so I played the base version of the legacy collection for the switch and I was met with no brick walls. The grind is definitely a holdover from older RPG's, and it makes the game feel fragmented in a strange way. If you're super good and don't get hit through the whole game and want a good rank, the cyber elves basically don't exist. Mixed with strange, cryptic descriptions spoken by the elves themselves, it's kind of difficult to see a first time player really using the elves in a helpful way which they might need. The game was apparently what it needed to be, and it is a lot of fun. The team's skill grew with their new releases and that's why I like this series. They're all the same kind of fun in different ways.

16:35 Personally I think NOT using permanent upgrades should be a positive score multiplier, rather than strictly punishing those who use upgrades. (Ya know, reward those seeking greater challenge, while not inconveniencing / shaming those who don't want a greater challenge.) If you're worried about no-upgrade challenge runs having "easier" high scores, then add a "secret" higher rank like S+ or S++ that are only available to un-upgraded players. Kinda like what Sonic Forces did.

while it definitely could've handled gameplay better in the 1st game/wish a few things from x were mentioned in zero like the dr. wily living on plot point started in x2-x6(weird zero never expanded on that.) i love the zero series more than x. x tbh is probably the weakest narrative in the series as outside maverick hunter x/x8 & some parts of x5/x6 it's stories either rather formulaic bare, idiot plot like x4 being more the maverick hunters fault for the war with repliforce(who dug themselves as well not stopping to talk.) for just branding them as mavericks instead of investigating/when x was himself forgotten storywise or wasted opportunity like humans being non-existent outside dr. cain(who i actually like dies in maverick hunter x instead of being dropped after a mention in x4/bad attempt to be x's version of dr. light but mostly is at fault for everything.). compared to other amnesia characters like shadow after sa2/heroes/06 zero wasn't boring(another dumb mistake somecallmejohnny made in his review of the series.) as even in the x series outside the wily plot/relationship with x & layer zero wasn't that deep as he was reactionary and in the playstation games his impulsiveness got his loved ones killed that he was already stoic wanting to get things done which is the same here as he never cared about his past when sigma tried to manipulate him(something that took shadow till 06 to fully realize.)compared to if x was in that spot it doesn't lessen him as he does still very much care for ciel(just not romantically as alongside being old enough to be her grandpa most of his friends are long gone.) and the resistance to still help/risk his life for them that's stronger than x's story in that regard where the reploids were either generic townsfolk, annoying hostages or just not delved into with the chance for bigger story x had. like it has a different antagonist(the guardians being my favorite especially when they team up with zero to stop omega.:3) instead of a one note as every version of ganondorf villain like sigma(who was only interesting in x1/x8 as it would've been better if we had gotten human antagonist with what issues the reploids/mavericks brought up.), even though i kinda wish copy x had been x making a radical decision into a antagonist(would've given him some layers compared to before where classic had more personality than him.)like we see x move on into the afterlife knowing it's in good hands with zero(similar thing i would've like to have seen with wily and zero/is like in zero's x6 ending where he seals himself into the zero series knowing x can handle things without him.),bleak tone that x missed the mark on(especially the lessened presentation after x4.) and seeing more characters(liked ciel compared to how outside x8/x6 mostly annoying alia was, humans actually appearing and weil being a good human antagonist/outright creepiest in the franchise.) alongside having an actual ending(which only the rpg's/legends to an extent have.) with zero sacrificing his life to save everyone showing him dead for good(zero 4 was made so they couldn't pull an x6 and asspull zero to life with his helmet being shown to emphasize that despite being pretty saddening for ciel.)in a way fulfilling both dr. wily/lights ambitions of being strongest wily robot bringing everlasting peace.

The Zero games had the best story of the entire franchise and this was possible thanks to the X series. I hope they would remake the Zero games in full true 2d hd with way more story, content, harder difficulty and so on.

I don’t think I came across these problems back then, or maybe i just forgot, don’t know which one. Megaman Zero was a fun ride, ZX was cool too, tons of fun with this game.
