1949 Ford F-1 Frame Restoration
This is a restoration of a stock 1949 Ford F-1 truck frame with plans to put a stock flathead engine in its original place.
This is a fairly condensed video with only a short amount of time spent on various details. Hopefully, it shows that it is possible to get an old truck frame back into a reasonable condition to get it on the road again.

    I'm actually in the same process currently with my 51 frame. the brackets you mentioned i have not seen yet at swap meets or Ebay, so going to fabricate them. they are 1/8 steel that I cut yesterday. Making the radius first around a steel tube I have ( the center piece of bracket). The other sides are basically flat with a 90 in the center and then fill in the sides. That's the plan, we shall see. Thanks for sharing your process!

    This is a good time to install new king pins, bushings and the thrust bearing. The thrust bearing sits in the worst place possible on the truck. They are greased only when the lower bushing is greased. Water dirt and road salt and lack of grease kill these bearings. PLUS you can relocate the grease zerk with the spindle mounted in the bench vise. Thanks for the video of your disc swap.

      Once the nav system was out of the dash, the electronics work took about an hour. Getting the unit out of the dash was the hard part because I was fearful of breaking any plastic parts or leaving tools marks on the dash. I think all told it was about 3 hours.

    Did you have to redo the brake lines and put in a new master cylinder?

    • @droppedwrenchgarage5422
      @droppedwrenchgarage5422 Před rokem

      I was lucky in that the brake system was given a booster and proportioning valve upgrade years before putting the disc brakes in. If you are running with a stock setup (no proportioning valve and a single reservoir master cylinder), you will need to upgrade those too. Otherwise, you run the risk of locking up disc brakes unexpectedly as they will likely engage before the rear drums with the conversion. I will say that the change to disc brakes made an absolutely phenomenal change to braking performance. I highly recommend making the change.

      Hopefully, you won't have the same problem I had with the kingpins in my 1949 F-1 (czcams.com/video/m78NACv_wkc/video.html) It took me 6 weeks of effort and me and a buddy of mine almost killing ourselves with a 20 ton press (the axel slipped out of the press while it was under high pressure and the king pin still didn't come out). Eventually, I was able to break it loose with a lot of heat, a stout steel rod, and wailing on the end of the pin with a 5-lb sledge to break it free. Good luck. If you can get everything done and get the disc brakes in, I will tell you that it is more than worth it. Braking performance with disc brakes is fantastic.

    What size of rim you're using? Does it have clearance issues, I see you've put wheel spacer?

    • @droppedwrenchgarage5422
      @droppedwrenchgarage5422 Před rokem

      The old post-1957 rims with the full moon hubcaps fit fine without the spacer (the ones you see in the video). I needed the spacer to put on 15" rims that I bought from LMC which you can see if the "F-100 Restore Some Shine" video. Unfortunately, the bleed screws on the caliper were just a small amount too proud and were dragging on the inside of the rim. It was really annoying to find that the LMC rims were just slightly too small. I think the originals were 16" rather than 15". The main reason I went with the rims from LMC was because of the hubcaps I wanted to put on when I cleaned everything up. One of the many painful (read expensive) cascades you bump into in one of these projects.

  • @droppedwrenchgarage5422

    Yeah, I need to rebuild mine too. It is out of the truck. I ended up pulling everything off the frame (clip, cab, bed) when I realized that the engine had serious issues and needed to go for a rebuild. Since then, I've cleaned the frame down to bare metal and found repairs that were needed there too which will be part of an upcoming video. I can make a video of the steering rebuild.

      I've already sent the engine off to the machine shop. Though the 226ci straight six isn't as popular as the flathead 8, it is a rock solid engine that is less prone to cracks.

  • @trm8514

    Fun to watch your video. I purchased a 1950 F1 in 1988 and restored it in 1994. It had a 7HA 6 (currently putting in a 8BA flathead V8.) I did some research on the beds for this truck and from 1940 thru some point with the 1950 model F1 the bed floor was steel. I took out the steel bed, put in a 3/4 in pressure treated under layment and then oak. Currently upgrading it from 6 to 12 volt, put in dual master cylinder (this for safety- left the drum brakes) and just redoing many things that need attention since first restoration. I drove the truck as my everyday driver for 5 years and it has been used as a truck. Still solid (live in Denver area) and looking forward to getting the truck back on the road in 2023. Not a resto mod. Mostly original and all changes could be change to original. No radio, AC, does have a defroster and after market (period accessory) heater. I am not ready to sell it yet but I have the 7HA engine (rebuilt with no 35000 mi since rebuild). If you are interested let me know and once the V8 proves itself, I will like put the 7HA on the market. Parts are still available, but NOS much harder to find than in 1994. If you are interested in my resource list, let me know and I will put one together. Have fun. Definitely a fun truck to drive. Cheers.

    • @droppedwrenchgarage5422
      @droppedwrenchgarage5422 Před rokem

      Thanks. I appreciate it. I realized after a bit more research that the bed was original though rusted out rather badly. I haven't had a chance to put out a new video since I finished rebuilding the front suspension. I did get the engine to turn over via the starter after pushing it over ensuring I could get it to go all the way by hand. I did encounter resistance with the exhaust valve on cylinder 4 which is sticking in its guide. Exhaust on cylinder 6 was also sticking open but didn't resist motion like 4 did. Given I was down 2 out of 6 cylinders, I pulled the head to find that the intake on 3 had been "repaired" if your definition of repair involves using a die grinder and a loop of metal that really doesn't seal. So no compression on cylinder 3 either. A maintenance log indicated a valve issue in the early 80's. Over the summer, I recorded a bunch of additional content and ultimately pulled the engine and sent it off for a rebuild. Other than parts availability, did you have a reason to move away from the 7HA 6? Working on these old machines is a blast. I love that everything is metal and rubber rather than brittle plastic.

    • @droppedwrenchgarage5422
      @droppedwrenchgarage5422 Před rokem

      I also forgot to mention, in case you are interested, this truck came with the 4 speed "crash box" manual transmission (not synchronized) and a Dana 41 with a 3.93:1 ratio differential. I did find a kit to change the ratio to 3.54:1 which would offer an improvement. I really don't want to swap out the rear end with a modern one.
