How I redesigned my dysfunctional floorplan
I bought an abandoned cabin and I'm turning it into a cozy cottage. Join me for the adventure.
To keep costs and materials down, I made a few strategic changes to the floor plan to optimize flow through the rooms and redistribute wasted space. Let me know what you think of the changes I made and what you would do differently.

Look what I found while demo-ing my abandoned house (ep 3)

I bought an abandoned cabin and I'm turning it into a cozy cottage. Join me for the adventure. Things have to get messier before they get better. Demo requires peeling back layers of sheetrock, insulation and all sorts of building materials to uncover the heart of the house. We found some treasures (always look under the plywood!) and some problems, including some reluctant squatters. #homeimpr...

I bought an abandoned cabin and I'm turning it into a cozy cottage. Join me for the adventure. Welcome to my new home! A construction site with no water, no power, a ton of vandalism, and a maybe a few furry visitors. Let me show you around this 2 bed, 2 bath home that's ready to get a makeover. Thoughts on the interior? What would you change? #homeimprovement #homedesign #homerenovation #diyho...

I bought an abandoned cabin and I'm turning it into the cozy cottage of my dreams. No water, no power, no experience. No problem...? Join me for the adventure. Let's start at the beginning of my renovation journey - a snowy day in February when I saw a tiny "for sale by owner sign" on an unplowed driveway. Down the driveway was a house with broken windows, code violations that hadn't been lived...

All about siding
zhlédnutí 649Před 28 dny
Here's my thought process behind my new siding STYLE, COLOR, and MATERIAL. When I bought my abandoned house, the cedar plank siding was splintering off in strips. The south-western facing side of the house was subject to so much weather that the planks were just barely hanging on. I knew the siding needed to be removed and then had to figure out what to replace it with. #diy #siding #diyhome
A trip to the nursery to buy plants for my garden
zhlédnutí 186Před měsícem
After 2 years of renovating my house, it’s FINALLY time to pay some attention to the yard. But where do I start? I met with Abby at@DevittsNurserySupplyNewWindsor and she helped me find the native perennials. But why native perennials? I want my 1-acre plot of land to blend seamlessly with the biodiverse habitat around it. I also want everything I plant to serve a purpose in the natural ecosyst...
Is symmetry boring? A convo with an architect

My friend, Nicolas Moussallem, just finished a degree in architecture at Cornell. He's a thoughtful designer and brilliant at creating design alibis (go to 15:30). In passing, I said I thought symmetry was the enemy of good design. He disagreed. My biggest bathroom pet peeve
zhlédnutí 86Před 2 měsíci
Small sinks are a huge pain point for me. No counter space to put anything down and water gets everywhere. To avoid the dreaded TPS (tiny pedestal sink) in my guest bath I got creative and floated a single slab down the length of the narrow room with a bowl sink. Plenty of counter space without making the bathroom feel even smaller. My primary bath was designed from scratch so I was able to fit...

I can't wait to see what happens with the rock.
That’s a weird looking rat snake if it is
Black momba
I am so curious how you have dealt with the monster rock in the basement. Looking forward to future videos : )
oh yes I'll tell all in a separate episode! Thanks for watching
New follower and the teaser worked! Damn it, hurry up!
thanks for following along! New episode on wednesday :)
Will you be adding stone to the exposed foundation? Hope so.
So much exposed cinderblock! I ended up going with light grey stucco around and in the front it will be mostly blocked by plants
I'm here for it!
There is danger everywhere , a smart person is prepared
But how about the danger of living in an isolated place where individuals came to throw in windows and express their agression?!
Only because it was empty for 10 years.
it was definitely spooky at first but I think it was just kids looking for a place to smoke cigarettes and punch walls 😂
Looks Great
thank you!
Beautifully done.
Thanks so much!
And a few packets of seeds too. You can start them inside even in the middle of summer for outside planting. 1 packet costs less than 1 plant
Yes! Seeds for those with even more patience!
maps.app.goo.gl/SEuiCpAPCvghMmFJ7?g_st=ic Here is an example of a church in Rome where the facade, the plan for the entrance, and the compositional elements on the whole, each had to compromise symmetry in order to fit the restrictions of a tight alley and existing conditions. Design elements such as doors and apertures, or the belfries, are balancing each other compositionally from left to right but asymmetrical.
oh great visual! thank you
To me personally, your kitchen does look in the 'we have guests over' state right now - only the towel/oven mitts and amount of bottles is even approaching messy - but if you were a pro organiser, I'm assuming that's only slightly more toward the 'performative simplicity' end of the spectrum than normal. When they stage the Friends' apartments, there might be a cereal box out but the friends are close enough that they don't consider each other guests, right? If they were hosting a party, they'd probably pack away the cereal too. I think it's ok for homes to have a 'hosting' mode that's one degree cleaner than the 'living' mode, it's only when 'hosting' mode becomes many degrees cleaner that it becomes performative.
oh yes! That's a great way to put it - "hosting mode". I imagine even within that we could breakdown the effort of hosting mode whether it's old friends, colleagues, or a camera crew! Thanks for sharing
It's so funny because I never considered it very thoughtfully, but I have always loved seeing those details while watching Friends. The kitchen is active and really reflects that Monica is a chef and that people are constantly there. She often has a large decorative bowl full of fruit or veggies but it really feels like she's planning to use them to make tomorrow's dinner. The apartment is always clean but so comfortably lived in. Even the guys usually have some note or drawing on their little white board, that may or may not have anything to do with the story of that particular episode, lol. -- Those newer shows' sets are so weird they remind me of waiting rooms or leasing offices 😅 Love your thoughts on finding a balance because it actually brings better clarity to what I'm aiming for now. I've gone pretty minimal over the past few years after realizing that I was living far beyond my management threshold. I have really loved tucking things away for easy cleanup and visual simplicity, but you've made me understand why I've come to love the little open bookshelf I bought for extra kitchen storage: it looks so homey and cozy and lived in! Everything is used regularly, so it isn't clutter, and therefore doesn't stress me. I never expected to just stop and look at it, but I totally do and it makes me very happy. ...And now I really have to laugh out loud because I actually did think of Monica yesterday as I put a bunch of pears into a pretty bowl so our counter would look nicer -- wow, have I finally arrived?? 😂
haha! I love that you noticed the details of the show. It probably subconsciously made us feel like we were part of the friend group. A kind of come-as-you-are viewing experience. I'm so glad the bookshelf brings you a little corner of lived in joy :)
@@bea.copeland I think you're totally right!
Love this video so much! Also, where is your sweater from???
Thank you for watching :) Sweater is from a thrift store *vintage Izod*
Ok I feel better about my very lived in house!
Spectacular man
It's a nice thought, but where I live there are simply almost no houses for sale. And even the fixer-uppers are too expensive for a young person to buy.
I totally understand that frustration and have many friends and clients in that position now. I found my house on a whim driving a dirt road after viewing an abandoned house that was 100k out of my price range. The house I found had a tiny "for sale by owner sign" with a cell number and wasn't listed on any real estate sites. Sometimes opportunities pop up in the weirdest of circumstances. Best of luck with your search!
You are right. Imagination and creativity are needed to survive in today's housing market. Decades ago my husband and I lived in a 25 ft (sitting head room) sailboat for 2 years while we saved a down payment for our first home. And today, when I look at tiny homes, I remember the boat's dinette that became a bed. You're on an important mission!
I love that story! Thanks for sharing.
5:50 it's great 😂
We'll send you pics!
I’m ready!!

I've watched 5 of these no tape videos and this was the only one that described where the scored edges are supposed to go and wrapped it at a manageable to follow speed. A+
I can't seem to get the measurements right, I either have way too much, or too little.
looks great!! why is the horse shoe upside down? :)
I thought no tape 😔😔😔
