Welcome to the CZcams channel of the Royal Choral Society. The choir was formed for the opening of London's Royal Albert Hall in 1871. The late Queen Elizabeth was our Patron until her death in September 2022, and HRH the Duke of Kent is our President. Since our debut we have performed under the batons of the world's greatest composers, including Verdi, Gounod and Elgar. Our current Music Director, Richard Cooke, took over the baton from his distinguished predecessors in 1995. This channel will host short clips from our recent performances. Music fit for a King! On Coronation Sunday, 7 May at 2.30pm, join the Royal Choral Society at the Royal Albert Hall for ‘Coronation Celebration!’ - a glorious choral music extravaganza to celebrate the crowning of King Charles III and the choir’s own 150th anniversary. If you sing, then you’ll be able join in ‘beltissimo’ for Parry’s coronation anthem I Was Glad, together with the Epiphoni Consort, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the mighty 9,999-pipe organ, all under the baton of the choir’s Music Director, Richard Cooke, and presented by author and broadcaster Zeb Soanes.
Since its inaugural concert in the Hall on 8 May 1872, the Royal Choral Society - named by Queen Victoria herself - has been conducted by some of the world’s greatest composers, including Verdi (Requiem), Dvořák (Stabat Mater) and Elgar (The Dream of Gerontius). This celebratory afternoon concert will showcase these highlights of their choral repertoire, alongside music by Handel (Zadok the Priest, Hallelujah Chorus), Mozart (Ave Verum Corpus), Coleridge-Taylor (Hiawatha), Rachmaninoff (Ave Maria) and Panufnik (A Cradle Song), plus a few surprises along the way.
