Marvellous expansion of a five-bedroom condo unit in Tampines
A five-bedroom condo spanning 1,700 square feet might sound like plenty of space for a couple with two teenage kids. However, this unit in Tampines had a layout that did not quite meet their requirements, and the owners sought the help of Wynn Neo, Creative Director of I.D.I.D (idid.sg/), to make it work.
“The owners felt that the living and dining area was too small, and so one of my main tasks was to redesign the space to make the communal area feel more open and spacious,” says Wynn.
The interior designer demolished one room to create a much larger living/dining space, and also extended it out to the balcony by levelling the balcony floor using the same tile. This dramatic expansion allowed more room for an elegant pantry, lots of storage cabinets, and a comfortable space for the family to come together and relax.
The enclosed kitchen was redesigned as an open-concept cooking space, and the synchronised pocket sliding door can easily close off the area when needed. The new layout and cabinetry better accommodate the owner’s many appliances, and there are even two sinks, one for the cooking area and one for hand washing/dispensing drinking water.
To further enhance the sense of space, the designer has built an elegant retractable dining table that can fit eight people when fully pulled out, or serve as a compact four-seater when fully slotted into the kitchen counter.
It is clad in Italian sintered stone, and together with the various marble patterns around the home, give the space a touch of luxury whilst complementing the elegant colour scheme of dark walnut, greys and creams.
Equal attention is paid to functional features. The designer has created a storeroom by the foyer, and even designed a concealed laundry rack in the balcony that looks like a light fixture when not in use.
Further in, the kid’s rooms feature custom pegboards that they can decorate as they like, and the study is a handsome space that’s designed to match the owners’ motorised desk in solid wood.
Just like the living area, the balcony in the master bedroom has been designed as a seamless extension of the room itself, and a suspended custom wardrobe divides the sleeping and dressing zones while letting some light and views through.
And even though the original master bathroom did not come with a bathtub, the interior designer has redesigned the space to cater for one, so the owners can enjoy a relaxing bathing experience whenever they wish.

This is a very cool space. I have only one thing I would change... the bathroom basin piping from plastic to metal. It look imo cheapens and detracts from other features in the space because its the first thing you see when entering.
I love the use of movable pieces so youre not tied down to one configuration. And love the warm and vibrant colour palette ❤

how big is this are? the combined living and dining space looks big for a 4-room flat. Nicely done especially the half open concept kitchen with an island, and the master bedroom + walk in wardrobe + desk space. Great job! This is the opposite of typical homes here. There are just too many decorative items all over the place and no statement piece that catches one’s attention and piece everything together. Ended up looking messy and cluttered like those cramped homes in Japan’s cities.
White grout filler with wood looking tiles make the grout looks so obvious.

Neither the bali villa nor the featured home looks wabi sabi to me. The villa is the usual resort style with plenty of natural elements like wood, stones, rattan and greenery. For the home, it is way too orderly and aligned to have neither wabi sabi nor resort feel. The output is not very different from the typical Singapore cookie cutter home beside the fish tank for the faux tree. The placement of plants around the house doesn’t add to the intended feel. There are too many small decorating items around the living area that are distracting as the skylight with faux tree statement piece lack the impact to be the focal point.
