R&F HANDMADE PAINTS began manufacturing professional artists paints and providing artist-focused technical support in 1988. Today, R&F distinguishes itself by continuing to craft the highest quality paint in small, carefully controlled batches where the eye and skill of the paintmaker are key. R&F's distinct product line includes two types of paint: our classic wax-based encaustic paint and luscious, linseed oil-based Pigment Sticks®.
R&F's Chromatic Tones Color Set
R&F's Chromatic Tones Color Set features a soft palette of six pale tones in 40 ml cakes. It includes Brilliant Yellow Extra Pale, Celadon Green, Cerulean Grey, Green Gold Pale, Scarlet Extra Pale, and Ultramarine Blue Pale.
In this video we demonstrate each color full strength against a black and white background to highlight the role value plays in determining how chromatic whites operate. A white background, which will contrast less with chromatic whites, makes chromatic whites appear darker. It tends to bring out its color, while at the same time making it look slightly grayish. A black background will tend to bring out whiteness.

Id probably get used or two and use them sparingly, and have an underpainting in something else. Im generally a Duotone painter or use color splash to add color to a monochromatic piece. Ex. Important objects in color.
Do i need to prime the back of the panel as well?(In case of both gesso priming and encaustic medium priming)
What type of varnish do you use? It's a question, thank you for your video and your answer.
are pigment sticks suitable for wall art? for interior use
I dig the new box...Is it still housed in the same type of plastic tube? FYI your Cad Red Deep is the best Cad Red Deep on the market❤❤❤
Nope the plastic tube is gone. Just the paper carton and we had to keep that little rectangle of polyethylene that keeps the stick clean as it goes into the box. Glad you like the Cad Red Dp! 😁
Can I just add some of the paint stick to my painting without prepping it on paper? For an example to a acrylic painting or a gouache painting.
Hi there! Not sure what you are referring to when you mention a paint stick. Are you talking about R&F Pigment Sticks - our oil based paint?
So creative.
Thank you for this...I've been wondering how to best use a razor blade and now I understand. Where can I purchase the tool you're using for deep scraping at 2:20-2:56 minutes? Not the pear-shaped Kemper tool but the one that kind of looks like an old-fashioned razor.
Hello! Glad you found the demo helpful! The scraping tool you are referring to is also made by Kemper. It is carried by a variety of different retailers. I recommend doing a search for a straight rake scraper.
Will the painting dry? When left long enough. Thank you.
Will it dry like oil paint in a tube? When left for long enough. Thank you.
Yes the Pigment Sticks are basically just linseed oil paint in stick form so they will dry naturally as a high quality tube oil will
@@rfpaints Thank you so much. I was hesitant to buy it for a long time because I couldn't tell the difference between oil pastel chalk and oil-stick.
is pigment stick same as oil stick? how do you clean it?
Yes - a Pigment Stick is our trademarked name for the oil stick we produce. It differs from other commercially available oil sticks in that it is lipstick-soft and has no adulterants or filler. You can clean up the same way you would with any high quality tube oil. Some people use solvents. Others use baby wipes or baby oil to wipe their tools. You will find more information on our website rfpaints.com.
I like that tool your using to scrape lots of layers what is it called. Thanks
I used several tools in this video. Perhaps you are referring to the pear-shaped loop tool by Kemper?
How do you get you wax soo smoothly across the canvas
How do you get transfers like you are using if you don’t have the tools.
Thanks for your question. I'm wondering what specific tools you are missing? Are you currently working with encaustic?
Yes. I don’t have the transfer - copy machine. The only thing to me would be a copy machine that’s not gonna work, right. And magazine prints won’t work even if you banish them? Thanks
If you don't have access to a toner-based photocopy machine, you can usually make copies at FedEx Kinkos or Staples for a small fee.
Can you do more traditional type painting with oil sticks?
The Pigment Sticks are just oil paint so yes you can paint in whatever style you like. It may require the use of a brush or the addition of your favorite oil based media but entirely possible :)
is it possible to use Blending medium on some parts of the oil painting only? Can I paint with pure oil paints over the parts glazed with Blending medium? I understand this cannot be done with Cold Wax medium
Let the cadmiums live on.
I love watching you work, Lisa. Awesome !
I am completely new to this amazing art. Learning how to use all of the different techniques to create something awe-inspiring is my mission. Thank you to each and everyone of you who share your remarkable skills and techniques, leaving nothing out, so that the ones who come after you can learn and grow into their own, is the most precious gift of all! You are the true forefathers / forepersons who set the bar! I, myself am so very grateful and proud to walk in your footprints! I bow down to you all!
Is the blending medium just a clear cold wax?
No - our Blending Medium is linseed oil with just enough natural wax to make it solid at room temperature. It doesn't contain any solvents like cold wax has. Instead of adding body to your paint and helping speed up the drying time, Blending Medium can be used to create glazes, extending your paint and adding transparency. Blending Medium with Drier can be laid down directly onto your substrate before you begin working with Pigment Sticks. The small amount of drier in it can help dry your paint from the ground up. Hope that answers your question!
I'd like to try it with silverpoint rather than encaustic. Can it be used on paper?
Great timing in watching this video. I just did the first layer on a Gelli plate. While waiting for it to dry, I watch this video. I am going to use just one of my pigment sticks for the color of the second layer. Wahooo!
this could be a parody
And there is so much more that can be done with these! I'm a huge fan..... And user!
WHat did you thin it with in the video? It looked like and oil.
I saw a new tool that I did not recognize for scraping. It looked like a razor on a handle, but it was not a razor. Is that an R&F product?
My apologies - I missed this comment. The scraping tool you are referring to is also made by Kemper. It is carried by a variety of different retailers. I recommend doing a search for a straight rake scraper.
Can I use pigment powders with encaustic ??
Hi Ana. Some people do mix pigment powder into encaustic medium to create a form of encaustic paint. There are a few things to be aware of. Mixing in pigment is not the same as buying commercial grade paint that has been milled. Our pigments are finely ground on a three part mill and different colors require finessing in order to make a successful product. Milling breaks the pigment down into what are called colloidal size particles, which means they are small enough to remain in suspension. Mixing cannot do this. All it does is distribute the pigment without sufficiently breaking it down so pigments don't stay adequately in suspension. Paint making is a very sophisticated science and an art and professional grade paint will always have many more such advantages over handmade paint. Another thing you will want to be aware of is exposing yourself to airborne particulates if you work with pigment in your studio.
Where can I get that hot plate you are using pleas I am new to encaustic thank you
Oh I have this set. Love them. Are you painting directly on the panel with black and white gesso?
In this demo I am painting directly on a panel that has black and white gesso, but it the black gesso is acrylic. We set it up for demo purposes this way, but it is not a stable way to create a painting. You'd want to work on either encaustic gesso or a unprimed wood panel or on a background that was made up of white and black encaustic paint.
Yum yum yum……
How is the opaque version of each color created?
Never mind....I just saw the details after I clicked on "Read More". Thanks!
Very helpful. Do you have a video that shows using translucent colors over other colors?
Oooo! The best!
Thank you 🙏 perfect ❤
Luscious…every one.
I have a question regarding using the oil sticks on oil paper and if you know if you have to gesso the oil paper before using if you are only using the oil sticks and cold wax? Thank you
Hi from Australia...I've just found Office Hours Oct 2022. Fabulous information. Thanks!
Newbies should know that the heat during fusing can distort the transfered image so pass very quickly when fusing those areas...unless you're diggin' the distortion, then go for it!
Just wonderful, will be using this product for my next America Muscle Car Series soon to come.
They are very good tools for drawing. but dry too slow. especially Black.
Loved end result and the sticks however for an artist on a budget, thats alot of expensive product..
You guys are amazing!!
Glad you enjoyed the video!
Would be great to hear voice demo would love to learn more

Thanks for your comment. Glad you enjoyed the video.
Luscious!
We agree!
Can I add colour to the medium when doing a pour as my base/single layer? Or do I always have to do the first layer with just medium?
You can definitely add encaustic paint - the pour doesn't have to be done with just encaustic medium.
@@rfpaints Thank you very much!! :)
Is this painted on glass?
Not sure what you mean. This encaustic painting was done on Ampersand Encausticbord.
@@rfpaints Thanks, I kept watching all your videos and I think I understand a little what this Encaustic painting process is. Its all new for me.
RF sticks are easy and fun, but take months, if not more than a year to dry.
I just bought a couple of these pigment sticks and they are so luscious. What kind of paper can I use them on? For example, can I use standard watercolor paper with a couple coats of gesso?? Thanks!
We encourage experimentation, but recommend Arches Oil Paper. Our Pigment Sticks are best used with any papers that are prepared for oil-based media. Good luck!
@@rfpaints thanks!!
Hello explain using the wax sticks with prints? Do you always blending Solution. What’s the difference between melting the wax and painting and using the sticks to paint do you not melt them in the video I was just watching I just saw someone using blending solution not any melting is that because it’s an oil stick versus the wax bars please let me know thanks
Our Pigment Sticks are a high quality tube oil in a stick form. They are a completely different paint line from our encaustic paint cakes. We do not recommend melting Pigment Sticks. For more information on working with Pigment Sticks, check out our website. We have a great resource section devoted exclusively to this product line: www.rfpaints.com/articles-links. Good luck!
