    This is fricken beautiful. I just got a big air tank and had a couple of different idea’s on how to do this. One was very similar to this, and it’s good to see how it works, and obviously the simplicity of this design. I hadn’t thought of the chute like that, which looks like a cracker of an idea.

    If your tryin to get this regulated by the powers then this is the vid to do it. Why did you upload this clip. So many things you said dont comport with reality ie fill in to see if it holds or under container drainage?? lol. Why would you do this and upload it?? Ill fill it in then build reinforcement?? Are you serious. no. Your doin this for a reason. To get things like this regulated etc.

    I would of waterproofed the entire container with tar prior to covering over. A 8" structural dirt bearing concrete slab extended 2' beyond the container over the top would have solved your load bearing issues and would of served as a slab to build a shed on top. The sides could probably be supported with 6" I beams at mid point horozontal inside continuous welded at every vertical rib top and bottom prior to waterproofing.

    • @fursurething8659
      @fursurething8659 Před rokem

      I think the tar is a great idea. Also what if a vapor barrier was draped of the top of the container prior to burying?

  • @therealdiehl4671
    @therealdiehl4671 Před rokem

    I really like this. What diameter is your auger? A safety grate made of welded rebar would be some thing I would add. It makes a good place to bust your cement bags on.

    HI, Please do some more filming the next time you use it. I was thinking of making a small pan mixer but yours looks better and less complicated. I want to pour concrete from 5 feet in the air into tubes so am thinking this on a loader with an oil motor. Great stuff. regards, Jim in NZ.

  • @w.m.woodward2833
    @w.m.woodward2833 Před 2 lety

    "Next time" maybe consider pouring a concrete slab first for it to sit on, make the walls about 8 in wider on each side and back and then fill them in two feet at a time with concrete, maybe put a little rebar in it, and that will give support to the walls. Tar sides, back, and top to help prevent rust, Jack up pressure on the ceiling inside before pouring 4 inches of concrete on top with some rebar before burying it. Now your storm shelter won't shift over time and will hold up underground pressure much better. Maybe make your back vent a large enough hole to act as an escape hatch, otherwise you could be trapped in your shelter. 👍

  • @themanfromcabowabo1559

    This whole thing scares the crap out of me. Container shelters are built on a solid foundation with drainage channels and encased in concrete. The container is basically just a form. This is because container manufacturing specs don’t even come close to the integrity needed to hold back rain soaked earth. If that needs explaining you can read the following book: The air pockets always present in recent fill hold ground water. As more rain saturates the ground it becomes unstable and heavy. All that weight is now loading up directly on the container walls instead of the usual concrete barrier. So between you and tons of saturated soil is just your inside bracing. Meanwhile the sand and soil have eroded (this is not drainage of any form) from underneath the container. When the container shifts from this it’ll most likely twist. The twisting pressure adds to the stress your bracing and fasteners are already under from outside. This could fail explosively, even if not the twist it held back now transfers directly to the container. And the twisted container shell is all that’s left between you and 8’ of mud. Hopefully the front 10’ doesn’t cave in while you’re in there. Can it happen? Yes. Has it happened? Yes. Will it happen to you? Who knows.

  • @wendellzapata6613
    @wendellzapata6613 Před 2 lety

    The container should rest over a concrete foundation to prevent the shift in case the ground sink for water acumulation. Need to have drain pipes outside next to the wall of the container.

    I am a carpenter for many years now and I agree with JT on here about adding more support to your walls with studs coming down and attached to the ones running horizontally on your walls midway of the container. The the ceiling in there definitely needs more support with scabbing being attached with a couple of screws or ring shank galvanized hot dipped exterior nails in each end of your scab boards. It would not be much trouble for you to do that to keep you and your family safe. Nothing wrong with overbuilding and extra insurance on something like this if you know what in saying.

  • @BamaTony73
    @BamaTony73 Před 2 lety

    I'd run some more scabs in that skeleton you've bullt. Not every 6' but at least every 3' on an import container. That definitely helped tremendously doing what you did but why not put at least a few inches of a concrete roof on it. Then just brace it more and paint the inside with a good exterior latex satin or semi gloss that's mildew resistant. Behr makes it. A couple of good coats of paint will definitely preserve the life of the container. IMHO
