Why It's a Classic: The Night of the Hunter

A video essay about Charles Laughton's macabre fairy tale for adults about a mass murderer who simply wants a doll. Here I analyze the elements that led "The Night of the Hunter" to be elevated across movie history. Its universal Good vs. Evil narrative aided by its highly unique chiaroscuro visuals. This is, after all, an extremely unusual film, and it was one even upon its release. During the...

Now the top movies of 2023 (and 2022 and 2021) that aren't dramas or drama-adjacent. You mentioned one comedy, but seemed to imply it wasn't even meant to be a comedy. Maybe the issue isn't that your taste didn't involve action, comedy, thriller or horror, but rather, movies in those genres weren't even close to being contenders. Shame, if so. Our tastes seem wildly different though, I'll say that. I don't like sad endings, I don't like depressing stories, I don't like somber atmospheres, all of which you seem to adore. I did like Birdman, but the possibility that he dies at the end has made me remove it from my "to-own" pile. Then again. . . .

I got the point of the movie, however, is not a film I would watch again. Saying this is the best movie of all time was completely ridiculous, I know tons of movies that you can rewatch over and over again, but this was painful to watch just once. As I say, I got the point, but there's no way you can consider this as the best movie ever, not even in the top 10.

Intriguing list (and NOT surprising that HollyWOKE gave us NOTHING but multi-million dollar bombs 💣) The one disagreement, “Maestro” BEST movie I saw last year… primarily because Carey Mulligan breathed LIFE into the unfeeling marriage of convention and didn’t try to argue that Lenny - being a genius - was a cold fish in all but his love of Music. And the cinematography that took us from the 50s thru the 60s thru the 70s to the brooding - digital - orange and teal of today was a Master Class of Film evolution!

I admire your channel and your infinte movie wisdom. But: Ferrari? Really? This Film was a big disappointment in my eyes. A staggering amount of unmotivated shots, one example being when Ferrari visits Dinos Tomb. Or was anybody able to keep track which red car was piloted by whom, who was in the lead and so on? Also: Which drivers are we supposed to care about? I had the impression that some just disappear from the story randomly. I could write pages about what I didn’t like about a film I very much wanted to like.

Well said! I enjoy this channel a lot, agree with most but Ferrari let a lot to desire. I couldn't care any less about the characters. All the cars looked the same and the shots felt kind of random. Some great, some good but with no point. Jamiroquais Cosmic Girl clip is a more memorable Ferrari film.

Wow i never disagreed more with you than with Dogman… this was the worst film I’ve seen in 2023 and by far… the characters are all so cliché, the use of a therapist session that tells you so conveniently what you need to know… c’mon, Besson is trying too hard to reconnect with his past success, this plus the awful focus breathing effect that was constantly super distracting throughout the film, ugh … the only good thing about the film is Caleb’s performance, but it’s far from enough to save it I love movies that take risks and are original but they can be good at the same time it’s better, Poor Things was far far better that this crap
