I'd done a lot of Google maps work based on the ukfossils website guide on the site so knew roughly where to go. It's definitely not a super easy site to find but hope you got some goodies!

I've only got 1 good one, and it came from Sandsend last winter after a couple of storms. Definitely the best place for them, but they are very hard to find especially with how heavily picked Sandsend is at the minute. Got to keep looking!

It admittedly is a fairly delayed video, but there is still plenty to be found if you spend the time down there! Hoping to get out again soon but life has been busy busy

It's a good place, but at the minute feeling a bit heavily picked. Needs a few falls or some big seas to shift some things around.

@@dinoskool that's true, first time I went was a few years back and I didn't walk far. I now I go to kettleness and back or if I'm lazy all the way to Runswick for a drink and nibble, then drag myself up the hill of dread...to the bus and back to camp. .... That's a real love/hate relationship.. I did love seeing the arch and I missed it last visit.... Just hated not seeing it on the way back.(almost back, happy reminder gone. )

I think most fossil hunters have love/hate relations with the coast paths in and out. Very few are nice gently paths especially after a lot of walking and a bag full of rocks on a successful hunt. The path up by Runswick is brutal but at least there are some nicely placed benches to help out. Much like at Ravenscar where I know all my stopping points 😅 Hope you have some success when you are back over!

😂 I mean, probably... But I decided to have a change from the hill and slippery shoreline. Do I regret it? Not at the time, but now... had I found a massive Harpo then it definitely would have been worth it. That quest and uncertainty of what you will find is the joy of fossil hunting!

There was actually a sequence recorded where I was planning to overly an image showing the layers, however getting a good geological/stratigraphic column to plonk on top was not doable without further delaying the video. It is on the list of things to add to future videos and once I've got it for one video/locale it will be much easier to add in every time

However, all of Ravenscar that I filmed at is uppermost Lias of Yorkshire so roughly 180 million years ago

If you found devil's toe nails at Ravenscar I'd be surprised. Usually from the Lower and Middle Lias stuff from near Robin Hoods Bay or up north. That being said, if you were in RHB you definitely might have found an Amaltheus - usually distinct as they have a keel that looks a little like a rope with a series of small constrictions rather than a single smooth keel.

@@dinoskool I was between raven and boggle when I started picking them up..... Ended up with about 6-8 good ones, big and complete. Tbh tho, this trip saw alot of shells, muscles etc.

Ah, that makes more sense. As you head left from Ravenscar to Boggle you start going back quite quickly into the beds that have the devil's toe nails. I tend to go right from Ravenscar to the upper lias beds which don't have them.

@@dinoskool walked robin hood to the second cove at ravenscar.. Did the silly thing of shimmy round the beach end of Robin Hoods bay (didn't know I'd have to wait there lmao.. All dry 😊) Only spotted them coming back, once I saw one I saw lots. Mind if i ask... Found what appears to be a small dak..... But it has a line running round it..??.. The ribs look dak. The line sinks in. Any ideas?

Thanks! Ravenscar is always good to me, but the next hunt is somewhere different for a change too

Ravenscar is probably one of the hardest spots to get to due to the height of the cliff. This also protects it from a lot of casual fossiling meaning the finds can be good. At the minute, you can follow the path pretty much straight down to shore where the seals haul out on the headland. From there, cut along the shoreline to get to the main fossil hunting sections thus avoiding the ticks. This route isn't possible in winter as the seals haul out in different areas and have pups in some of the bays you have to cross. It's a tough old time with lots of clambering and slippery rocks there and back as well as then having to get back up the cliff with hopefully a bag of rocks. I would not recommend if you are not fit or experienced with fossiling on this bit of coast as it will not be as rewarding as other beaches will be. Definitely do Port first and see how you find that!

@@dinoskool thanks for the advice and quick response! Really appreciate it! Last year I went fossil hunting as well and indeed went to port Mulgrave. Got some lovely finds there and ended up not going to ravenscar, but this time I’m too curious what I could find there. But will definitely go to port Mulgrave first to get a taste of it again before heading to ravenscar. Hopefully I’ll be able to figure out the route when I get there. The path you mentioned, is that just straight up where you put ravenscar into google maps and then you follow the route down? Or is it more complicated to find the path down to shore? I think I see a path down to south cheek but idk if that’s the right path to take to avoid the ticks Thanks again!

I've been lucky with the smaller hildys down at Ravenscar. The big ones less so! There are definitely lots of shelly blocks and it is easy to miss the keels in them let alone bony bits. Hopefully whoever it was will see the next ones!

Thanks! Was nice to get out and Ravenscar is always good for producing a nice diversity of rarer specimens. Was also good to actually have some time to do a bit of prep to better show off the finds before posting the video!

I don't think I fell that day. Can't say the same about the previous trip where I was very soggy from landing butt first in the sea 😂

@@dinoskool ha ha, oh dear. Last time I was there (in the winter) the second I stepped off of the muddy grassy slope onto the big beach rocks I went head over heels and would’ve smashed my head if it wasn’t for my back pack!!

Yikes, scary! Glad the backpack saved you from the fall. I've definitely been thankful for my backpack cushioning my fall before, but can't decide if the fall wouldn't have happened without the backpack though

P. boulbiense is apparently the striatulum subzone but that's only exposed at Ravenscar on the Yorkshire coast. You do get them with Grammos and other ammonites though. It is the downside of the pyrite preservation. But they don't just rust, the sulphur component of the pyrite also turns into sulphuric acid making the breakdown even faster The Yorkshire ones seem better than the Dorset pyrite ammonites at least when it comes to their stability

I'm very pleased with how they've both come out, and no doubting Mark has done fantastic work again. Now needing to find some more, or maybe a Harpo in a nodule!

Two of the 3 are back. The other is still off but apparently is a major pain so who knows if/when it'll be back. These 2 are gorgeous and it's really funny looking back at the videos of me finding them and realizing I should have known the Cleviceras was not a Harpo, but I was just too excited 😅

The specimens from Dorset are lovely in that honey yellow matrix colour. Don't have any, so clearly need to get down hunting! Until then, I'll enjoy the Yorkshire ones and these two have prepped up a treat as you said.

I think it'll be left as is for the moment as it's my only decent Harpo in my collection. Maybe down the line, but I love how it looks presently

Pretty sure it is. Think almost all the big ones in my collection are lusitanicum rather than the somewhat rarer bifrons

There's a fair few genera from Ravenscar that I'd never heard of until I found one and needed an ID. The uppermost layers there are eroded across the rest of the Yorkshire coast and so we don't see the ammonites elsewhere on our coast. Neil Trudgill is writing a book up on the upper lias of Yorkshire and suggests there might be 4 species of this genus in Yorkshire but tough to know with preservation not being great in many of them.

Very kind for saying it. I know there are a lot more incredible finds people have, sadly most of us will never see their collections. I'm out again today hoping to add to the list of rare things, as well as dropping off/picking up a few more rarities for prep 😅
