Hi there! I use a biweekly paycheck planner from a brand called Clever Fox. You can order it on Amazon in a ton of colors. I ultimately modify some of the columns to better align with my planning needs by using some whiteout and ruler to draw an extra column.

I'm relatively new to the budgeting lifestyle. I have tracked 100% of my expenses for the past 14 years, but have only been doing a formal budget for the past 15 months. It's a game changer -especially helps with controlling impulse spending. In my budget I have many more categories, actually each entry has a category and a sub-category for example "FOOD/SOCIAL" and "FOOD/GROCERY" "FOOD/EAT-OUT". This is easy to manage with a spreadsheet and gives some insight into habits. Have you always budgeted or is it a recent lifestyle change, if so what caused you to start?
I love that! You can really see how you spend when you involve subcategories! I started budgeting November 2022 and I totally echo your sentiment, it has changed the game for me too. I started because I felt like I had a good salary but could never make ends meet and I was so tired of always having a credit card bill lingering month over month. I also had a friend introduce me to Dave Ramsey and hearing other people's experiences through him was so helpful in opening my eyes to my own poor spending habits and excuses!
@@amyslifestyleandbudget Dave Ramsey was a starting point for me as well ! He's right that using plastic leads to increased spending. I switched to cash and got on a monthly budget. These tips helped me drop a lot of emotional spending and impulse buying - two things I have struggled with. Glad you're working things out.

I do! I like to go all out for Christmas, so breaking it up and putting a smaller amount away each paycheck makes the end of the year easier for me!

Because you have a system that works for you and you have a solid ritual of writting everything down, have you considered keeping the written budgeting system, but keeping the cash in those sinking funds in a high yield savings account? Some of them have as much as 5% interest. I'm new here so I don't want to sound like I'm criticizing. Let your money work for you!

I move money in and out of some of these funds pretty regularly so I don't think some of these funds would have money in them long enough to earn interest in a high yield. Others, I totally agree, I just haven't found the right high yield at the right bank! I'm thinking about moving my Christmas and my Education envelopes to something like that. Is that what you were thinking too?
@amyslifestyleandbudget yeah, the interest is calculated monthly. So even if there was $1000 in it one month and $500 the next (because of needing tires for example) that's still a couple of extra bucks ya know? It could replace your 'gifts' category and now you have that $20 to put elsewhere. I'm in Canada so I cannot recommend a specific bank or credit union but there are plenty of options. Some even have sign up bonuses!

As someone who had a $70k income in my early 20’s and did choose to leave school because I already had a good job… I worked in that field for 4 years before deciding it wasn’t for me. Then went back to school to finish. Stay in school. You never know how you’ll feel in the future about a job, but you’ll always have the degree.

When using physical cash budget such as envelopes, don't you lose interest on the money??
Great question! Most of my cash envelopes are for spending categories that are relatively short term, so any interest that may be earned is likely pennies. There are a few categories that build up, and I typically will do something called a cash condensing where I replace an amount, for example $1000, with a fake placeholder and take the actual cash to deposit at my bank. At that point it would earn some interest. Even then, I don’t really have enough saved at this point to really earn me much interest but one day hopefully I’ll get there! ❤
