    I moved from windows to Mac as fed up with all the updates and problems with windows, tried to install adobe and had so much hassle very time the Mac upgraded so went down the gimp route finally getting affinity photo and never looked back, sharpening and noise reduction is great for me as an amateur and the stacking and pano is brilliant

    I didn’t like the subscription only model. If there was an option for purchase, I would have chose that. I used Affinity Photo since version 1.6. Bought the universal license when 2.0 came out and never looked back. I think in time Affinity will put more tools that’s missing.

    • @paulcoxdraws
      @paulcoxdraws Před 27 dny

      Agreed. If Adobe allowed purchase of the software without subscription I would probably be using them.

    Your story is similar to mine. I used CS 6 until I upgraded my Mac in 2021. I began using Affinity around 2018 because I knew I wouldn’t stay with Adobe. I actually prefer Affinity’s workflow compared to Adobe for a number of reasons. it’s a joy to work in. Affinity’s strength is in using the 3 programs together. If you’re only using one program it’s advantages may not be relevant to you. I have to use Adobe at work but i tend to do image editing in Photo and certain layouts in Designer. I never could make my peace with Illustrator after 30 yrs as a designer.

    • @paulcoxdraws
      @paulcoxdraws Před měsícem

      I agree, their strenghth really is in combining all 3 programs.

    I used Photoshop for photography but only occasionally. Their subscription model became prohibitive. I have other monthly bills. I changed to Affinity and for an amateur photographer like me I found it superb. I just adapt images every now and then. Adobe’s model is far to expensive. We are not all professionals.

    • @paulcoxdraws
      @paulcoxdraws Před měsícem

      Agreed. The subscription is unsustainable if you’re not profiting off your art or photography.

    In comparison of tutorial videos with Photoshop and Affinity it is immense, I think that frustrates the one who has no design idea. And what I would like would be videos that in Spanish say 'miniaturero', that is, I would like to learn to make great miniatures for CZcams. I can do the same, I only fix them with what I can with Affinity Photo and Canva. I hope to find some course because 'miniaturero' is practically a profession of which you can live. Pordon for the extensive comment.

      Thanks for sharing! I agree, the miniature scene seems to be pretty popular right now. I know a few people who make and paint miniatures, but they don't make videos about them. You could always start a channel about your process of starting out making miniatures.

    I used photoshop since version Photoshop 7. Never used anyother other software thinking that no one comes close to Photoshop. I heard so many designer giving Affinity a try. I Tried it. Its very similar to adobe so learning curve is not that bad. so far its been 2 months i have not touched Photoshop or illustrator, nor i missed it in anyway. Sure i have some skill issues with Affinity but at this point i am willing to learn it.

      I have used Affinity Photo only a few days and loving it. 20+ year PS user. Have a video praising AP on my channel too. How do you like the Illustrator Affinity software? Haven't tried that yet.

      @@betterpixs The Illustrator alternative, Affinity Designer, is a good vector program. I think it lacks in a lot of ways, but I am happy to find workarounds for some of the Illustrator functions I used to use. My two main gripes with AfDesigner is that it doesn't have a live trace feature, and the vector brush when pressure is turned on leaves strange artifacts at the end of the brush strokes quite a bit.

    if a true, all-rounded adobe competitor came by i’d jump ship so fast 💀 i did a really good job switching my team onto Figma though! the ceo still doesnt get it entierly but i got his trust w/ all the work we’ve made in it over the past 3 years : ) Only thing left to replace is InDesign, and that one I’ve used the 2nd most in my workflow (figma is first). Just learning about this Publisher thing though, thank you, imma check it out.

    • @paulcoxdraws
      @paulcoxdraws Před měsícem

      I was introduced to Figma in a recent team I was part of. They all used Figma for their designs. It seemed like a pretty good app once I got the hang of it. Publisher is the InDesign alternative. I've used it to layout 6 of my self-published books, as well as 6 differrent calendars. If you have the full suite of the 3 Affinity softwares, Publisher has a great feature where you can switch between the "Personas" of the other programs without leaving Publisher. So, you can switch to the Photo or Design personas and all your tool sets switch to those of each of the respective programs. It's my favorite feature. So I can layout, design, and draw/photo manipulate all in Publisher because I have the full suite.

  • @GordonCato
    @GordonCato Před měsícem

    I switched from adobe to On1 Photo Raw to replace Lightroom, and Affinity Photo to replace photoshop. I was planning to drop adobe anyway because of the subscription pricing, but their recent fiasco with their terms of service sealed the deal. I actually prefer my new programs over adobe and have been very happy with the switch.

    • @paulcoxdraws
      @paulcoxdraws Před měsícem

      Thanks for sharing! Yes, their TOS fiasco seems like a mess. Not to mention the sketchy way they handle artists' work with their AI feature.

  • @DamienDae

    I mainly use Adobe because it's the industry standard and we exchange files with other services and external contractors; plus my employer pays for it, so price is not an issue for me (and we have a corporate account). But I still use Affinity Designer and Photo occasionally. I sometimes use Affinity Designer to edit PDF files and it does it way better than Illustrator: text handling in PDFs for instance is so much easier with Affinity Designer. I use Inpaint (the equivalent of content-aware fill in Photoshop) in Affinity photo when Photoshop does a poor/bad job. It's not always perfect but sometimes Affinity Photo does a better job; you have to try both apps and see which one will give the best result, depending on the subject. I don't use Publisher but I still bought the whole suite (version 1 and now 2). I want to give Serif (Affinity's publisher) the support they deserve. And when I retire, I already know I won't be using any Adobe software anymore. Affinity will be my go-to suite for graphic design.

    • @paulcoxdraws
      @paulcoxdraws Před měsícem

      Awesome, thanks for sharing! I have also used Designer to edit PDF files and it does a fantastic job. I think of all the Affinity software, Publisher is what excites me the most. Since I also have Photo and Designer, I've been able to layout, sketch, and fully illustrate a children's book all in Publisher because I am able to switch between the Publisher, designer, and Photo personas without opening another program. It's such a great feature!

      The great thing is, if you're not totally sold on it, you can do the 6-month free trial and use all of the features how you would normally use the Adobe counterparts. If you don't like it, you can just cancel before your free trial is up. I'm curious what would make you consider switching?

      Some of the neural engine stuff, particularly the halftone removal. Not enough to get me back though, and there's other, small apps that can do the trick.

    • @paulcoxdraws
      @paulcoxdraws Před měsícem

      @@bomcabedal There are definitely some things you leave behind when switching to Affinity. As an illustrator, I particularly like the brush engine in Photoshop a lot better than the one in Affinity Photo and Designer. However, I've been able to find other programs such as Clip Studio Paint and Procreate, that have excellent brush engines, so I use those if I need to do any line art. There are workarounds and I don't think they affect the efficiency of the work as much as some might think.

    • @c.augustin
      @c.augustin Před měsícem

      I would love to be able to switch, and I would also prefer to work with Adobe CS6 Standard, but even though I'm on Windows (11 by now), I'm not able to get it running on my new PC (because Adobe just "revoked" my license when I tried to activate it - I might find a way to get it running again, but for now I'm using CS3 and CC). I do use Affinity Designer and Photo for the one or other thing, but all my "heavy-load" workflows rely on AI and PS and their automation features, so no way to switch. And there are so many, sometimes very old and simple AI and PS tools missing - it's very frustrating. Oh, and export options are not that good with Affinity apps, and especially EPS and PDF export are not good (in many ways).
