Take a day off. Taking my own advice in Kardamena, Kos - (Akti Palace)
After a year or so, I've released my first physical zine/book. It's called Take A Day Off. This video is a meditation on why taking a day off is so important, with some inspiring quotes - all from the wonderful island of Kos.
We stayed near Kardamena in the Akti Palace hotel. This is not a hotel review as such, but some footage was filmed there.
If you're interested in finding out more about the zine, then please check out this page, where there is more information and a link to buy a copy. It's taken a while to write - it took even longer to do the original artwork.
www.cultivatedmanagement.com/take-a-day-off-the-book/
Please note: This channel is pivoting away from straight forward "management" advice, and hence some new styles of video. Expect learning, meditations on life, creativity and more.
Thanks
Rob..

I assumed (wrongly) that Amazon would auto switch the links to the region the visitors are coming from. It clearly doesn't :) These pads are ace indeed. I get through hundreds of them. To be honest, I find that almost all legal pads are broadly similar, certainly here in the UK. The reason for these is because they can be bought in bulk for a good price. I'll look into how to do international links. Thanks for the comment!

There's simply too much information, data and knowledge out there for me to try and learn, so this video shares how I go about capturing what is personal to me. Other people are making sense of bigger data sets with computing power (Wolfram being one I keep an eye on). The more I do learn the more I do wonder how much of that vast world you talk about I am actually aware of - not much, but enough to keep my simple mind happy :) Thanks for commenting.

It's not "what works for you" because you are re-inventing the wheel. If you intend to help us and add value, you need to tell us. You say Apple Notes is good. How do you use it. Where can I find out how to use it. I've used it before but never considered it as a way to consolidate my notes ... how? @@CreativeSoulProjects I appreciate the reply. I didn't mean to sound harsh. I seriously never learned about how to organize things so I pretty much just wing it. From my documents on my computer, to my browser bookmarks, to my possessions at home. The problem with investments is that most of them do not pay off. I don't even know what a "web clipper" is and I've been in tech and on the Internet since the 80s. I generally like the simple tools ... like vim for example. That I can figure out. Same with a lot of Apple functions like tags, or spotlight. I don't know enough to really make confident investments in this area, but I do realize the usefulness of it.

    • @CreativeSoulProjects

Hey - no doubt VIM could work out to be a tool of choice. I know plenty of people using basic text editors and tools like VIM to manage all of their work and learning. Web Clippers are simple browser add-ons that grab the contents on the website and store it to the tool -Evernote has one, as does Nimbus notes. It can capture the full page, or selected text, or simplified versions etc. It then gets captured in that tool of choice. You can then curate it in the tool (decide if it's useful still, tag it, move it, delete it etc), crunch it (take learnings from it into text files, VIM, notebooks - whatever resonates with you) and, in my model, contribute it (put it into action, share it with your colleagues or friends, or on social). Notational Velocity is a popular text based tool, simple notes also uses text files on your machine but I prefer tools like Nimbus notes as it allows for more flexibility and access anywhere via the web. Hope this helps - I'll maybe do a video on how I actually use it. Thanks Rob

@@CreativeSoulProjects Here is what I was thinking would be a helpful invention, and it doesn't even necessarily have to be software, though software could help. Say I have bills from a company coming in my email. So I drop them on my desktop. After a while I get a lot of them on my desktop, so I create a directory to put them in, and maybe subdirectories by year, or prefixing the file names with their date. So, that is obvious. But say, the Ukraine war comes along, or global warming is something I get interested in. I save documents or links to information on these things, and so end up creating more directories on my desktop. What I am thinking of is a natural, organic way to arrange and organize files, or bookmarks, or even keep the directories in sync with my bookmarks, so for every bookmark folder I would have, I have a directory where downloads or documents can be stored and retrieved. But the problem is, what are the rules for creating and then pushing down directories, putting like information like People, Interests, Companies, Finances, History, Images, etc in order and evolving that order over time in a logical war. After all, computer disk directories and file systems are pretty powerful databases in their own right.

Great video - thank you, Rob. If we want to play the blame game we have to pass the ball back to the leaders and managers. I strongly agree with Jocko Wilink and his views in "Extreme ownership". It's always the fault of the leaders. Always. And I would like to add one more thing: we have to reframe well-being at the workplace as a self-contained topic. I'd like to go so far as to say that it should all start with good health. That is at least my north star. I don't think we can separate work life and private life here. It needs to be an integrated system to be successfully healthy in the long run.

    • @CreativeSoulProjects
      @CreativeSoulProjects Před 2 lety

Absolutely - extreme ownership for sure. The problem is most leaders and managers have absolutely no idea how to improve the system that people work in, hence they struggle to change the workplace to make it better for everyone.

Hi, Thanks for taking the time to comment. 1. what is the difference between website and knowledge management? A website is just that - a site on the web that stores information etc. Knowledge management is about how you as an individual garner knowledge from information, experience, observations, learning etc. I often say that knowledge is information in action. So, gathering information is not the important part, it's putting that information into action in your life that build knowledge. 2. What is the importance of knowledge management in the website? I'm not sure I understand this question. A website has information on it, you could use a web app / site like Google Keep or Evernote to store that information. Knowledge is about putting it into action and learning. And reflections of this journey could also be stored in a website. Or in a notebook with pen and paper :) 3. How can I implement knowledge management for different website or Web pages? If you have plenty of websites that contain information you could capture the whole site using tools like Evernote. Or you could extract the relevant pieces into the system you choose. I use digital tools to collect information because i can capture meta data such as date, time, web address, author etc for proper referencing. I can also sort in a digital tool using tags etc. But this is where you need to build your own system. What I share in this video is my system, but it may not work for you. You could even use a pen and paper to build your knowledge management system. Some people, like Ryan Holiday and Tim Ferris seem to use an analogue index card system. There are many ways to manage it. 4. Do you have any written assessment on the topic? Purpose... So the root cause isnt always the employees mentality but the system planned by leaders. I think what you say is meaningful. People need to be reminded on their purpose, role, and how their work is important. Wow, if only we do this kind management from early age. Thank you, go get some hot tea sir. (b ᵔ▽ᵔ)b

Thank you! Yep - purpose, clarity over your work, roles, career growth, incentives, rules, all part of the system of work that Leaders ultimately have control over - yet many people work in confusion with no clear purpose, autonomy etc. Thank you for taking the time to comment. Rob

Maybe making a big video for yourself that is well organised with all relevant notes pictures quotes videos links and uploading them to a CZcams channel and making them into a playlist then making the playlist into a big mega video if you can is the ultimate form of memory storage lol

Last thing I want to do is annoy you but seems like I may have added some clarity for some of the stuff you already do :) Thanks for the comments.

Ha - it is a good beat - and sorry, cannot remember which track it was. It was from Epidemic Sound and you've given me an idea for future videos - to list the tracks as a number of people ask me what the tune is :)

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it. A masters in knowledge management - how cool is that? I bet there is so much I could learn from you with this. I've done nothing theoretical at all, merely mashed around what seems to be working. Thanks for taking the time to watch the video and leave a comment.

What do you think of Sherlock Holmes' 'Mind Palace' system from the UK series 'Sherlock' just wondering your thoughts as I imagine that studying this you might have came across it?

I try time-blocking a few months ago but i did not consider attention and energy as important factor. I feel bad for not able to do task that i plan, thus i got burnt out. Thanks for the lesson Rob, hearing it from another person perspective really helps a lot. I will try the method again.
