Do Malibu and Axis Boats really use 25 GPH Gallons per hour?
Today we bust some big online myths about fuel consumption on the Malibu and Axis boats. This is a real world fuel efficiency test of what to expect while surfing with no breaks. Wanted to show in real time these boats get anywhere from 8-12GPH depending on wedge control. Boat featured today was a 2022 Malibu 23 LSV with the LT4 Supercharged 6.2L Engine. Look forward to producing more of these videos. Any specific model you want to see between Malibu, Axis, Nautique, Montara, or Bennington let me know!

Hell of a rig brother! ☝️
Appreicate it! This truck got totaled :( boat lives on forever though haha
What engine do you have in your boat? I have the M5Di in my 2022 axis t23 and with full ballast I can’t get the boat over 11 mph with the wedge at 2 with 3-5 people on board
I would visit your local dealer or dealer you purchase from and discuss this with them.
I agree it's going to be hard to beat a Malibu or Axis for out of the box ease of getting a surfable wake. The Surf gate, while i argue is less adjustable, is very effective for a shorter, firm wave with a lot of height and push. That being said. To say the quality is the same is just not accurate. 5 minutes inside these boats and you can see an obvious quality difference. The fit and finish on Moomba boats is just better, Less plastic, less exposed fiberglass, more and thicker cushions. as well as higher quality vinyl and stitching. I get you sell them, so there is natural bias built in. i also am not knocking Axis, but of all the boats i have messed with, They use the cheapest materials. At least on the interior.
Well I can tell you people don’t trade them in for other brands because they are bored. The surf wave is disappointing on the moomba/supra series. The sales numbers don’t lie. People choose Malibu, Axis, and Nautique over many other brands consistently for big reasons like surf wave. We were a long time top selling moomba/supra dealer. we know those boats better than most.
Same person, different profile lol. And I’m not disagreeing with the Axis producing a great surf wave and being easier to get a surf wave. And Axis is one of the few that doesn’t actually need more ballast to produce a great wave. I’m mainly just talking about the quality of the boat and fit and finish. The cushions are much thinner and harder. There is less upholstery overall, the flooring is thinner, etc…. It doesn’t mean they’re bad boats, and I would have no problem owning one, but there is a difference between having a better out of the box surf wave and claiming the boat is of equal build quality.
Can anyone tell me if it is common to experience heavy steering pull on the supercharged Raptor motors?
You probably need a steering cable. The motor does not affect the steering capabilities of a boat.
@@RecreationCertified thanks! The service technicians and the sales staff were telling me it is completely normal to have steering pull on these high torque motors. Maybe they just want to sell a boat, I don’t know
I’ve owned 3 other inboard tow boats and driven many others and have never come across that before. It’s not that noticeable towing while surfing, but when I am just cruising at speeds over 20mph it gets worse and worse. The boat is super clean and perfect otherwise, not sure if I should buy it? It’s a 2016 Malibu LSV25 with 420 hrs on engine. Engine is the 6.2L 575
Really sucks that you can’t see the percentage of ballast that’s filled in the tank
You would be surprised at how many brands don’t run sensors and just use a timer. You can audibly hear when the boat is full or empty by running the ballast pumps and visually looking to see if water comes out.
Correct but you’d think Malibu would just add it. Might as well. I actually love these screens. Way more than Malibu or mastercract screens. I just think they’re more responsive and I like the layout more. Just wish they had more information.
What do you think Malibu and Axis are going to do with all the unsold boats Tommy’s left them? In Knoxville area (home of Malibu, Skiers Choice, and Mastercraft) and the word in the street isn’t looking good for Malibu. Mastercraft is starting comeback and Skiers Choice is ruling the roost right now. Love all 3 and they all suck and break too! Lol! Cheers
Tommy’s is a great example of not paying your bills and bad things happen. I wouldn’t worry to much about Malibu. most sold tow boat in the nation. I imagine all the Tommy’s dealerships will be replaced if not already.
Can you initially set up surf settings on the sport dash? I had my boat out this weekend and when I push the surf left or right on the sport dash nothing would happen. But if I loaded a profile on the touch screen first then it would let me switch left or right on the sport dash while surfing. Is it no possible to initiate a left or right input straight from the sport dash?
No it should work. Sounds like either operator error or issue with the sport dash buttons.
@@RecreationCertified well shoot. Thanks for the info. I shall try it again next time I have the boat out. Thanks for the video. These are helpful to us amateurs!
Awesome video. Thanks for sharing this!
I like Malibu. But the reason I didn’t go with it was fighting the steering wheel while surfing. Still a really nice boat, but wanted ease of operating for my wife and kids if I’m surfing.
What year boat, what size boat, how many tracking fins, what kind of steering?
@@RecreationCertified im assuming whatever it came with. It was a 2021 23 LSV. I just know that when the surf gate deployed it pulled a lot more than the centurion, supreme, Supra, and Moomba did. I will admit, making a good wave is really easy on it, but fighting the steering wheel the entire time surfing would have bothered my wife.
Sounds like you found the perfect boat for you family. We carry 6 brands so I understand shopping for the right one. @@alwaysboatin659
What would you recommend for the best wakeboarding wake?
how big of a boat?
23 feet I think
We have a 23LSV. No Plug and Play ballast fitted yet. What does the added ballast do to the wave when fitted up?
Complete game changer. Has more energy, taller, longer. You wont regret it.
Do you recall what prop you were running? Elevation?
Great video: could you do a Nautique S21 with the zz5 engine, please?
We do not order the ZZ5 for our area. We are above sea level and typically opt for the same motor that is in this boat the 6.2L
This video was great. Helped me work through it on my own this morning. I just shouldn’t have waited until it was already freezing cold to do it! 😆
Great video. Anyone know of a video for draining and filling the transmission fluid?
Do you have to add extra ballast to surf without rope
Thanks for the video, just started my research for a boat and that’s one of my questions I have yet to get an answer for.
The gate/brake style surf systems cause so much stress on the engines compared to a boat that uses tabs to shift the roll of the hull to naturally create a wave. Sure delayed convergence is quick but youre still dragging hardware thru the water. Supra, Tigé, Centurion (and theyre subsidiary boat companies) all make a much more customizable wave using the natural flow of water under the running surface of the hull. Additionally, youre going to burn thru gas much faster on surf gate systems. But if youre not worried about that, really just comes down to preference
Do you know how much fuel a boat uses with no ballast, surf system, or center tab deployed at 11 MPH?
Why would you trade a boat in every year? I get maybe every 3-5'ish if you really don't want something out of warranty. But every year seem like burning money just for fun.
These folks were just not impressed with the wave they got for the money. Loved the boat, just disapointed in the wave from Moomba/Supra. In the past when we demo a moomba vs axis or supra vs malibu we make sure to bring up wave difference. To some familes surfing is really important. To others they could care less because they have little kids.
This must be a regional thing. In Houston it seems there are way more Moombas than Axis's
I have seen the market data for Houston. Lots of brands sell more than Moomba supra in that area and the country. Moomba/Supra is 5th in sales in the nation and about to get passed by Centurion/Supreme I would wager in the next 12 months.
Which boat sucks more gas?
Some friends of ours just got a new AxisT22 and messaged me after the 2nd weekend out concerned about how much fuel they were burning and wondering how much I burn in my Moomba Mojo. The wedge and surf gates certainly create a lot of drag which translates into high fuel burn.
I’ve live tested it before. The axis around 15 GPH but that would be with no breaks. We usually go out after work for 4 hours and use 20 gallons.
Surf gate and wedge sucks gas like crazy. Tab style systems consistently get under 10gph. Centurion around 7-8
any boat with gates will burn far more gas.
@@stevenparsons4373 Let's get the empircal evidence. Ive seen data before on Centurions, Nautiques and Malibu's. Let's do it on these boats. I suspect that Moomba would win in this case.
Would full ballast work well for a 2020 23lsv
Malibu and Axis typically loves full ballast on all models with surf gates for surfing specifically.
Even if the axis works better out of the gate, Moomba probably has a higher ceiling and has a better build quality. Too bad Malibu doesn’t have their build quality of back in the day.
We sold both for a very long time. Build quality is similar between all brands. Moomba, Supra, Malibu, Axis. They all are hand built. hand built comes with its obstacles. We have 6 boat brands currently. They all break, they all come in with warranty items from day 1. Not a brand out there that doesnt.
The Malibu and axis boats are running plug and play add on bags. This is the same equivalent to adding led ballast in the moomba. I have never really liked that argument
Big issue though, you cant drain Lead. you are suppose to pull each 50lb bag out after every trip. Moomba has bags as well. The point being you pickup an axis or malibu and head straight to the water, fill it all up, hit surf left and go. Moomba takes tinkering and lead after you leave the dealership to get the wave to a good level. We have sold both brands for a long time they have there pros and cons.
Is it bad to leave your 50lb bags of lead onboard? Other than your boat sitting lower in the water
@@kevinlizzo8031 It can be pretty dangerous to trailer or boat depending on where the weight is and what kind of boat its in.
On the LSV’s, do you think the surf wave is any different whether you have the diamond hull or wake hull? Thanks!
Yes, It is slightly different. Size of boat though will be a much larger difference that what hull it has in my opinion
Easy answer axis produces way more boats a yr than moomba
Produces and sells the most. Gotta have both to be on top.
At first it's straight piped? That's awfully quiet for SP. I have SP as well, it's stupid loud lol
Does it hurt the impeller if you use the port on the rear of the boat rather than the raw water intake on the bottom of the boat to add antifreeze when it's running/warming up (need to get the thermostat opened)? And if it's not recommended, does the raw water inlet have enough suction to pull the antifreeze up/in the motor, etc. through my "plunger tool" if I use a small length of garden hose and a bucket with antifreeze in it? How much antifreeze would you suggest to have on standby to complete this process before I see it flowing out from the exhaust? - I have a 23 Malibu w/M6DI engine. Thanks for your video, hard to find step by step videos that can help owners complete this process on our very expensive tournament boats and without paying hundreds of dollars to dealers.
I bought a small pool pump that you can drop in a bucket that connects with a female hose for this purpose. if you let the pump kick on before the engine starts you'll have pink antifreeze gushing out the hull pickup. Once the boat starts, very little drips out that hull pickup indicating the impeller is sucking up all the anti-freeze. Just make sure the boat is at full operating temperature and run your heater at the same time. It starts kicking out pink water about the 2-gallon mark. I typically flush with 5-6 gallons. Probably overkill but better than the alternative. After that, I pull all 4 plugs and drain everything out. That said, every spring it starts up and blows out pink for a few seconds so it goes to show having antifreeze in there is your best bet. I do this for my Yamaha and Seadoo skis and knock on wood haven't had any issues with New Hampshire winters.
Thanks for your help!@@ericvonderlinden8938
I need to hold the wheel on my T220 (especially on the port side (left) wave). Is there something wrong with my boat?
Where you have the wedge position and where people are located in the boat will have alot to do with the steering. The direction the prop spins is also why its harder one side vs the other. Some boats also get ordered without the 2nd tracking fin. 2nd tracking fin helps quite a bit
Apparently this boat has a variety of color options that differ from the traditional white which is great in my opinion‼️
Is there anything that needs to be done with the tanks? Do you need to do anything after you remove the plugs?
I would make sure the tanks are drained and put the boat at an incline. Again this is not a 100% solution for winterizing for both engine and tanks. Highly highly recommend running engine on coolant and running coolant into the ballast.
Great video Conner!! Malibu & Axis #1!!!
My 2021 malibu 23 lsv has a chrome port on the rear above the platform that looks to be a winterization port that goes to the strainer. I pulled the 4 plugs and the strainer like you said.. will that winterize my engine or should I also pump antifreeze into this port. Thanks
I would highly recommend running coolant. You never know if any water is still lingering inside that could freeze and crack major components. Make sure the coolant is rated cold enough for your climate.

Not a fan of touch screens but If I owned a boat with one I would definitely want a Garmin. Pavati has a video where the owner of the company claims he has never had a warranty claim on a Garmin screen used in his boats.
I think Garmin is amazing. We havent had a warranty claim yet, but its an electronic device that gets beaten by sun and water all day. Im sure we will see a failure someday but going into our 2nd model year with them I am very impressed. I am hoping Malibu follows suit and switches to Garmin. Time will tell.
Hey man! This is an old video but I’ve been going wakesurfing in Shenzhen, China and I feel like the guy doesn’t really understand his boat.. he’s only filling up the ballasts to 30% on the surfing side (so we waste time filling the ballasts when surfers change side) and isn’t using the wedge correctly. It’s on the ocean but super flat water, how can I tell him he’s wrong without sounding like a dick 😂
Full ballast, wedge at 3. Depends on how many people though. Also limited to engine size and what prop he is running. Need some more details and I could help ya dial in the wave
What are your thoughts on running the boat to operating temperature and flushing with RV antifreeze, and then pulling the plugs? I'd hate to have that one pocket of water that's trapped, freezing, and expanding in the northern climates.
I do not recommend just pulling the plugs to winterize the boat. Always use rv antifreeze throughout the motor for winterizing. Leave plugs in before and after this.
@@RecreationCertified So after you run the antifreeze you dont need to pull the plugs?
correct if antifreeze is filled in the engine do not pull plugs. make sure antifreeze came out the exhaust@@ThePlaton20
Thanks for showing the wakeboard wake!
This screen might be the reason I switch from Malibu to axis. Just replaced my 7” screen on my Malibu and it’s really hurts to pay $3500 for a screen that’s basically designed to fail in 3-5 years…
I will be honest, having touch screens in boats comes with the territory of failure. It gets beaten by the sun, has moisture around it 24/7, and has different types of users pushing at different levels of pressure. Doesnt matter what brand. We work and replace them all. Literally name any brand we have replaced the touch screen. Havent touch the new Axis touch screen yet but Im sure it will happen. I am excited to see Garmin in this realm and really hoping we get a great longevity out of this screen. So far we have had great luck. Statistically speaking we have had great luck with the Malibu screens as well. When we sell used boats thats not the part I worry about. We see more powertrain and surf system failures than anything else. Again not brand specific we see it happen to all our brands and other brands we dont carry. Looking @ used I always recommend a good warranty to cover peace of mind when boat ownership is already expensive.
Taking on out with the family. 12 people total. What set up do you recommend to a solid left side surf wave?
Full ballast, wedge at 3 or 4, 11.2 mph, have boat pretty even weight with maybe one extra person on left side. It should be massive with that many people going
I got a boat last year and just finished the break in
Always a great feeling finishing up break in period!
Did you have the ballast full? We had our ballast full on and wedge on 3 and the wave was huge! Axis does an amazing job on the surf wave.
@@Tyson1T ballast full but no one on board with no plug and play bags in the bow or rear. We like to wait until after break in to install those. Wave is epic on the axis boats, can’t complain and they are so easy to setup!
Ok thanks. The wave is nice
I have a 2022 VTX 20, we are trying to get the surf gate to work but having issues with the river speed not allowing us to deploy the surf gate. You mentioned you are in a river system so have it set to paddle wheel mode. How do you set it to paddle wheel mode? Do you have any other advice for setting up in a river system?
Lots of variables that could be causing this. Call your dealer and have them walk you through what might be happening.
Is that a Super73 in the back there?
Yes we are a dealer
Do we need to fill the water up and how if we do? Thank you for sharing knowledge.
Im not sure what the question is?
When you start the engine on the water the impeller automatically draws up water from the lake so the answer is no you dont have to add any water.
