AUTUMN FORGE early season ice climbing in the Canadian Rockies
For 15 years Tanja Schmitt, Heike Schmitt and Matthias Scherer have travelled nearly every year in autumn to the Canadian Rockies to climb ice and mixed routes. This film features their ascents of autumn 2023 with Buddha Nature classic & direct, Mr. Hulot and La Goutte.

You had to be quick last winter in Cogne/ Italy - with unstable temperatures and fewer water 💦 than usual, ice lines stayed sometimes just for a few days. Good example was "Stella Artice", when in condition overrun, last winter however the pillar just touched down shortly before XMas and disappeared two days later… I guess we made the only ascent.

Does annyone know if it's possible in that kind of winter in Norway to camp while going out ice climbing? Or is this just extreme cold that isn't really possible for most without top of the line cold winter gear?
The weather is extremely unpredictable in that area. We encountered extreme cold to pouring rain and super strong winds. Therefore the camping gear has to be high end …

Great filming of the climbs, it's been 15-20 years since I ice climbed but I loved doing it. The sounds of the unattached ice brought back memories, so hollow is the sound probably vibrated the ice as well. The delicate axe work as well. Thank you!!

Awesome video, you and your crew are incredible climbers and I love your calm demeanor. At 8:30 did you cut off some of your climbing rope to leave for that double V-thread rappel setup? Looks much thicker than accessory cord!
