Honda ST1300 Pan European Light bulb UPDATE
I was asked about the sidelights on the ST1300 in the comment section on a video I made about changing the headlight bulbs on the Honda ST1300 Pan European. I had the side covest off when I changed mine a while back and I wanted to see if there is an easy way to get to the things.
Here is how that went...

    Sometimes the SMC repair kit won’t fix the problem and you need to replace the entire SMC assembly. There is a tiny pin hole that clogs up if fluid isn’t changed and this is near impossible to clear again, so your piston works in pumping fluid to the rear brake but if that hole is clogged up when you release the brake the fluid can’t return… and you get a binding rear brake again, even with an smc repair kit used. Only way to fix is to replace the assembly and ensure you change fluid every 2 years otherwise you end up in the same mess again! I had a repair kit installed on mine and it didn’t fix the rear binding, had to fork out for the assembly 😢

      @@MyGarage-ll8tx Slim hands and forearms... First one I pulled out, I didn't quite know what to expect, and just like another guy on CZcams, the bulb fell out but fell down inside the headlight housing. Luckily, I do guitar building and repair, and have some ways of reaching in and retrieving things in tight spaces. If you guessed, I used a carefully bent portion of a coat hanger with a lump of sticky putty at its end, you'd be correct. I was more careful and avoided dropping the 2nd bulb inside the housing. But, as long as your hands aren't too fat, but have long enough fingers, and you are dextrous enough to do it "using the Force" (eyes closed, visualizing and feeling the rubber stopper/light-holder, then it is easy enough to, bit by bit, work out the rubber stopper/holder and then there's 6" of wire to make it easier. The right side was harder than the left. More wires, and an unused connector on a pigtail, made the right harder to access.

    • @MyGarage-ll8tx
      @MyGarage-ll8tx Před 3 měsíci

      Ah yes, "the force". I know it well. 😁 I ended up taking the front apart just to look for ideas on an easy approach, (and get a bulb out from inside the housing..) but I ended on removing the lower fairing (by the radiator) and gain access from below like I show in this video.. Or loosen the sidepanel. The video is uploaded now: czcams.com/video/rxk8Rdv0gh8/video.html

    Did cleaning the bracket parts solve the rear brake dragging problem?

    • @MyGarage-ll8tx
      @MyGarage-ll8tx Před 3 měsíci

      Well.. I did more than just clean the bracket parts. I also gave the rear brake caliper some much needed TLC. But the bracket parts were completely stuck on my bike, so yes. It works now. :) You will always have some contact between the disc and the pads, but the drag is at a "normal" level now.

    • @MyGarage-ll8tx
      @MyGarage-ll8tx Před 3 měsíci

      Oh, by the way. When polishing the pistons with sandpaper you could jerryrig an adapter to a drill to fasten the pistons to it. That way you can just hold the sandpaper to the piston and wroom wroom! :D

    If you do this in garage, remove the side cover. Easy job, only few screws. Then you have room to get good grip of the plug tabs and release it. Also you can see the retaining clip and the bulb. On left side you can also check / add coolant same time. That saves your knuckles and swear words...

  • @JJ-nq4sy
    @JJ-nq4sy Před 11 měsíci

    I doubt this part was designed by engineers. The difficult part is to remove the plug from bulb, it stays there like welded. It does not help squesing the tabs with fingers. In older bike it may need to open the retaining clip between the rubber cap and lamp reflector to take the whole thing out. Then you have to open the plug back cover and work each connector from light bulb. There is a risk to break the clip fixing of reflector.

    • @MyGarage-ll8tx
      @MyGarage-ll8tx Před 11 měsíci

      @@MyGarage-ll8tx Yep. It's a royal PITA. I recall I bled out when I was doing mine. Sliced finger or thumb. Put Sylvania H4’s in and they’ve been stellar. Way brighter. LED’s will be the next round. I recall that the H4’s point a bit high so I have to have the headlight adjuster on low to not blind everyone!

    Hehe, H4 halogens are so simple. By the way, this is almost an identical process for the Aprilia Futura. I like acessing these from the bottom, much better on the Honda. The Aprilia has a baseplate in the way underneath.

      Anyone can tell me what is the headlight and pole light bulb sizes?

    • @robertborchert932
      @robertborchert932 Před 11 měsíci

      @@SO-ff1hw Stock, I found H4 type bulbs, 45/45W. I had forgotten about the unique tab type on these, there is a main (wider) tab at the top, and two narrower tabs below. It was a surprise when replacing them with conventional 60/55W halogens, as the 45/45 are a bit anemic. The H4 base of these OEM bulbs is a PX43t design, 120 degrees between the tabs. The 60/55W is a conventional base with the lower pair of tabs slightly closer together. As crisis is the mother of invention, I simply cut the lower tabs off. I am unsure of "pole light" as you state, but the two wee lamps in the upper corners of the headlight are likely 168 type.

    Thanks for the video! It really helped to prepare us for what to expect when disassembling the SMC and reassemble with a Honda SMC rebuild kit. We couldn't get the piston to budge with a rubber mallet, so we used compressed air to blow it out just like you did for the filter. The inside was the opposite of yours - the bore was perfect, but the flat surface that the circlip seals against looked corroded but felt smooth, so we just sprayed it down with brake cleaner and reassembled with the new parts. The piston moved freely and even popped itself out if we pressed it in too far. Reinstalling the circlip was the hardest part.
