Knitting Anti-Haul: You Don't Need this Stuff!
zhlédnutí 11KPřed 16 hodinami
I'm back with a fun little video, where I try to save you money. I used to watch the one-and-only Kimberly Clark's anti-haul videos when I was still into beauty CZcams, so I decided to make a knitting-themed version. If you love any of these items, you do you. If you're trying to save money and have someone talk you out of spending it, you've come to the right place :)
Knitting Podcast #5: Taipei Vest, Ammil Beanie, & throwing all my summer plans out of the window
zhlédnutí 3,1KPřed 21 dnem
I'm back with another podcast episode! A few finished objects today, plus a bunch of WIP's, and my summer knitting plans that I had to rip up and start over. Long story short, meeting gauge is hard, and knitting math is hard.

I'm back with another pattern round up video! I decided to skip my regular podcast this month since I hadn't made enough progress on my WIPs to justify filming another video, so here's a collection of patterns from Japanese designers instead! Guys...this one was a real bummer. I'm so sad this yarn didn't perform the way I expected it to - it's SO soft, and I really wanted it to work. I guess we can't win them all.
Beginner Knitter Learnings: Gauge & Gauge Swatching

Here it is - the first in my series of beginner knitter learnings! I was a little nervous putting this together, but hopefully this is helpful for someone out there. This is a video all about what I've learned about gauge, the many benefits of swatching, and what to do if (/when) you end up being off gauge on your swatch. Enjoy!

Better late than never! Back with my podcast covering the month of March, and this felt like a big one. I finally finished my epic gift knit Folklore Cardigan, and the recipient was really pleased :) Despite spending the majority of my time on that project, I feel like I still made decent progress on other WIPs, and even had time for some new cast ons. The end of February really snuck up on me, so here is knitting podcast episode 2! No FO's this month, but I've made good progress on a few WIPs. My gift-knit Folklore Cardigan continues to vex me. I WILL get this done though, I'm never one to shrink from a challenge :)

The absolute best project bag I own is a tote bag that my grandmother gave me with a bunch of felting supplies in it. It's a waxed/coated/something fabric that's water resistant, zip top, and has a little pouch in it that's the perfect size to hold a cable needle, some tiny scissors, stitch markers, etc... I've also got a couple of bins on my coffee table to put projects that need to just be parked for a bit but aren't going anywhere.

I'm also one of the many who disagree on the socks. I always do the same type of sock: 2x2 rib leg, heel flap and gusset, stockinette and then a star tip (evenly distributed decreases). They are a wonderful palate cleanser and I can really do them on autopilot at this point. About 2-3x a year, I go into a sock phase where i knit like 2 pairs of socks in a very short time. I only wear my wool socks at home, as i hate wearing tight socks when I'm in my safe space (this may be the autism), except for a few very old pairs (10-15 years old) that I wear in my winter boots for additional warmth. So that was my sock yap. Totally agree on the mohair. I have used it for 2 or 3 projects but I find that it makes me sweat fast and for some reason dries out my hands like crazy. The amount of hand cream I needed while knitting with a strand of mohair was CRAZY (i barely use hand cream)

most of my project bags are paper or plastic bags. the paper ones are amazing because they usually stand on their own, you can use the loops to carry them and feed the yarn through, the plastic ones are wonderful to protect your wip from water or moths, if you let it hibernate. I have exactly one fancy project bag and it was a gift. And I actually prefer having my projects in bags with handles and that are easy to throw in my backback

I'm not a knitter, but we have a similar-ish push in cross stitch communities, the idea of buying cute project bags that also suit the theme of whatever your stitching. Which is totally fine, I don't mind I think some of the bags are super cute. But I do worry because I see people who will also use a bag and be like 'oh yeah this sorta cuts into the look... cause my bag doesn't match the project." (Which I honestly think shouldn't matter. Like oh no your working on a piece that doesn't have to do with Halloween and you stuck it in your Halloween project bag. That should be fine. & yet for some its "I guess I need to order a new project bag to suit this ones theme". ) It can also feel a little odd from the framing some people use like "oh this project looks so much nicer because the bag matches it's aesthetic" or "I love this project because I also get to then use this cute project bag and it just completes the project" . Like I guess for me I just don't get matching a look to a WIP, cause when the wip is done its not going to live in that bag. xD I was using ziplocks, freezer ones but I found my sewing needles would break free. but I got a 3 pack of harder plastic bags I've been using for my WIPS now, that costed me $8.99. But I also do like using what I already have. I do like the idea of projects bags but honestly I feel like I would just use the same ones until they became hole-y or aren't functional anymore. I also do feel like if your going to spend that much on project bags, it shouldn't need to necessarily match the pattern but just be something you like / are drawn too.

Take back the rib on your red sweater. Use new non knitted yarn. If you dont have enough to do that, unravel the sleeve. Skein it then soak the yarn in warm water for 10mins. After spinning in a top loader only or use a towel to remove excess water. Thwack it. Then hang to dry.

Haha funny 😂 I've been following Marie Kondo kind of minimalism for a few years and I CRAVE everything you mentioned, a beautiful dedicated project bag, cute stitch markers, a project journal, etc. I think they'll enhance my knitting experience immensely... Anyway I'll dwell on it for a couple more years and decide.... Oh the sweet experience of waiting 😂😂😂 Ideas for single (maybe 100g more appropriate) skein of yarn that I have actually knitted multiple times and get great use out of: different types of headband (for hiking, running, casual), different types of fingerless mittens (thin ones for running, dress ones for autumn, felted ones for winter), cowl... But I stopped buying one skein as I normally get plenty of leftover one skein from all different projects....

My "project bags" are free tote bags I've gotten over the years from conventions and festivals. My "knitting journal" is a journal I got as a birthday gift. One tip: learning how to calculate gauge can save money. Rather than buying needles I don't have, I'd rather see if I can get gauge with the needles I already have. If not, I can adjust stitch/row count according to whatever gauge I can actually get.

While I cannot say I agree with most of these, I do understand that I don't need many knitting accessories, I just enjoy them when I can afford them. I usually try to support small makers. I also can make a pair of dk weight socks for myself out of one skein 😊 and have yarn left over. I love how cosy they are in the winter. Still, some interesting ideas here.

Very very enjoyable video!!! I love and use my cute project bags! It's a whole thing!😂 They actually help me keep track of my WIPs because I color coordinate the WIPs into matching project bag - But I also use random bags when that works best (e.g. at the pool) and I have the disposable income to buy them.😅 I've also never been tempted by the leather bags, I like pretty handmade ones I buy at craft fairs or off etsy from small businesswomen. I've totally learned the lesson about the single skein, and learned it again and learned it again!!! I love to knit cowls but how many cowls can you use or gift?! Ive got so many! ( literally I have 10-20, maybe more, they're stashed in a few different places in the house!)

I do like a nice hand-made project bag but restricted myself to smaller, independent, hobby sellers as well as stopping at 3. Rest are drawstrings, ex-handbags, and recycled zip-lock bags. Barber cord is ridiculous although fell prey to it and bought a small amount from Amazon but only use waste yarn. Needles have mostly been bought for a particular project, my interchangeable set I accidentally won! 🎉 Project books I do use but it's just a lined notepad. I am a sock knitter so the odd 100g ball does get swept up from time to time. Oh I hear you… I have occasionally been influenced and annoy myself about it! I do have a couple of project bags but they are expensive; a couple were made by friends and gifted to me, obvs I appreciate that, but leather?! I use Ikea ziploc bags (cheap), random other drawstring or tote bags (free) and the paper store bags with handles that stand alone (free, like gift bags) for the most part, baskets at home. I only use one brand of colour-coded fixed circular needles, 80 cm long, held together with one big ring, no fancy holders or folders - and I dislike interchangeables, mostly because I prefer thinner needles that are not usually available (except Chiagoo - and they require a different cable system!). And my faithful dpns which live in a simple zip pencil case I‘ve had for yesrs. I often use free/cheap make-up or toiletry bags for knitting stuff, too. Fancy dangly stitch markers always snag, I like simple rings or bulb safety pins that come with clothing I buy (on the labels). A piece of thread is fine, too. Those stitch-holder cables… I bought the PetiteKnit ones when I was in Denmark, taken in by the marketing - yes, fashionable latte colour but cheap shiny plastic yuck. Bought some of the matte silicon ones. Both kinds drive me crazy and either fall off the needle leaving my stitches loose or I can barely wrangle them off the needle… ugh. Should have known better!!
