    I've always hated vinyl records, even when I was a kid, that is why I tried to make a tape recorder in the fourth grade, I didn't succeed obviously, but at least I tried! The ticks, and pops, plus surface noise, and the eccentricity of vinyl records drove me (when I had enough money), to purchase a used teak A1500U, reel-to-reel tape recorder, but I could easily still hear the difference between "source and tape", the dreaded tape hiss. In 1978 as an engineering consultant for the "Great American Sound Co., I traveled to Japan to visit GAS dealers and the Tokyo Electronics Show. In the Sony booth at that show, I saw for the first time, a model PCM-1, 12-bit digital processor playing music from the video track displaying thousands of black and white, undulating bits on the monitor, from the same SL-8200 Beta max VCR I had at home, I had to own one of these! In 1983 I attended an AES meeting featuring Marshall Buck who was presenting his new "coaxial two-way" loudspeaker he had designed for Cerwin-Vega! In his demonstration he was utilizing a "vocal-only" recording of a female singer that sounded fantastic with an incredible "dynamic range" and no background hiss. Immediately after Marshall's demonstration, I walked up and asked him what equipment was playing back his recording of this singer? He pointed to this diminutive silver box, and said I'm using a Sony PCM-F1, 16-bit Digital Audio Processor and a VCR. I said how much for the PCM-F1. He said $1,500.00, and I said sold! I built a portable recording rig that included the PCM-F1 and other custom-made equipment that I utilized for various musical performance recordings made on location and I won an Emmy for an outdoor performance of the opera Faust! I've been a digital advocate ever since, if you wish to learn more about my current endeavors, search CZcams with the following: "JBL SYNTHESIS CREATOR", and ALSO: "HOWTOHOMELIFE". I actually never expect live events to Sound like the record (and j am very suprised when they do)... But i am so frustrated by having to guess what song is played at the Moment because everything is just basically white noise while the bass trying to CPR me... Now that you mention it i see some of the reasons that make it challenging to get live music Sound right, but still I wonder: can't you just turn the bass drum a little less loud so i can hear the damn guitar solo?

    • @TheBunkhouseStudios
      @TheBunkhouseStudios Před 14 dny

      @@Michaah yes, in most cases you can. Having the kick drum loud with lots of low end is definitely a trendy thing in the last decade or so. It's often overdone. There are factors though like with single point source PA systems where the engineer further back in the room will have the low end balanced where they're stood, but it will be more overpowering stood closer to the PA stacks. That's unavoidable without line array systems as that's just how a speaker works - the closer you are to it the louder it will be.

    Thanks for acknowledging this. It's an absolutely ridiculous and upsetting situation, and one of those sad, nonsensical, supposed "norms". It would make much more sense for appropriate sound levels to be used, than to have to wear ear plugs. None of the music events I went to before 2019 were too loud, in 2019 I went to one that was too loud and two that weren't, but the music events I went to in 2021 and 2023 were both too loud. Could it be the case that my perception of what's too loud has changed. or has the situation just been more of a thing recently?

    • @TheBunkhouseStudios
      @TheBunkhouseStudios Před 3 měsíci

      I wouldn't say gigs have necessarily gotten much louder. I've worked in live events for over a decade now and I would say they have always been just as loud. Small venues are the biggest challenge. I think people these days also expect a concert to sound like a record with perfect clarity and intelligibility between instruments which just isn't possible - especially in smaller venues, which are often acoustically untreated rooms with loud PA systems to compensate and loud instruments like drum kits and guitar amps on stage. There's no simple solution and part of it is just down to physics and acoustics - gigs will always be loud. There's also the way our hearing works with the fletcher munsen curve that means louder music sounds more exciting to us. People want it loud, but then will also complain about hearing damage. There's also situations like with night clubs where it would just not work if the music was at a comfortable low level. New technology is emerging all the time though and speaker designs are improving all the time which will help combat these issues.

    I would go as far as saying it's a Poorman's Eventide. I bought mine for $149 15 years ago brand new, and my only criticism is I didn't buy 2. *It's also a bit extreme for some needs as well where you need a delay, a modulation or a reverb, but you don't need 20 parameters to adjust.* For this reason, I bought 2 Virtualizer Pros, and they have moderate parameter controls, and are ideal for using on a guitar amp's effects loop or when you don't want to spend an hour programming a reverb or modulation for some vocals or an acoustic guitar. I greatly see the Rev2496 as a piece of studio gear to put on your mixing board's loop, mastering through your board or pursuing a commercial quality recording. *With all that said, PC's and even Android tablets provide so much now that a $100 tablet can genuinely replace the powerhouse rack units still on the market today.* Even 20 years ago I talked to a lot of other musicians online that constantly used the phrase, "just mouse it", meaning add your effects with your DAW after the fact.

    • @TheBunkhouseStudios
      @TheBunkhouseStudios Před 3 měsíci

      yes, I must admit it can be easier and quicker to pull up a plugin when wanting to dial in a reverb quickly. The interface on the rev2496 is a little clunky and slow. I don't think I'd ever get rid of it though and would recommend it as a useful tool to anyone mixing in the studio

    • @JonDeth
      @JonDeth Před 3 měsíci

      @@TheBunkhouseStudios I haven't used it in so many years I forgot how lol. There have been quite a few unites over the last 20 years with poor control system designs. Zoom had some of the best interfaces with great simplicity in operating them even on the most in depth units, but even their G5 for guitar which is my favorite modeler/FX unit to date was a nightmare. The virtualizer pro, on the other hand, is so simple you can master it in 5 minutes without even looking at the manual.

    • @TheBunkhouseStudios
      @TheBunkhouseStudios Před 3 měsíci

      @@JonDeth yeah i think generally these kind of rack units with extensive parameter control are always going to struggle to compete with DAW plugin UI design

    • @JonDeth
      @JonDeth Před 3 měsíci

      @@TheBunkhouseStudios this for sure and even in regards to other hardware, sometimes just 4, 6 or as many as 8 parameters with an intuitive interface are just more convenient. I have had units I outright returned because there were so many parameters, I had no use for them, and they just got in the way. I say this as a shred and sweep metal and instrumentalist.

    The idea is that the signal can be decoded using DSP and HRTF to earbuds. If that's the case you can make an equal argument you can do a pretty good simulation with some nice headphones. I would rather buy some nice headphones than add a silly load of speakers around my studio.

    • @TheBunkhouseStudios
      @TheBunkhouseStudios Před 3 měsíci

      So far the general consensus that I've been getting is that it's difficult to get good results mixing in Atmos in headphones. It makes sense to me that the best mixing environment would be a full Atmos rig, but then that becomes a huge stumbling block for most engineers.

Audiences were respectful up to time of the Beatles on Ed Sullivan Show when the audience went nuts screaming, ruining the TV performance, and visibly surprising Ed. (Quickly became the normal background for shows, which ended my own interest in such shows. FM started providing popular music in addition to classical ) Every network had a superb orchestra for their shows, likely more than one

      That's rubbish! I've not had that issue with any Gravity stands before. Not owned a round base myself but worked in venues that have had them for some time and they've been fine. Out of interest where are you storing it? Might have been the environment it was kept in - any cold or damp can cause things to rust.

      @@lucasjuniorproducer that is odd, maybe the k&M stands have a better coating, or perhaps even your gravity stand was unlucky enough to be from a bad batch or something?

    WOW. people in the UK pronounce the word Renaissance so much differently than we say the word in the USA.. I thought you mentally challenged at first listen, then I looked up it's actually just a cultural difference between the US and UK.

    From every performance I've seen, it feels like they lower the guitars and raise the other instruments a bit. All of them usually get a little solo each in at least half of the songs on each album as well.

  • @fifis677
    @fifis677 Před 7 měsíci

    You had them extremely quiet like you have the slider at about 40%. If you listen to them at full volume, you hear each and every instrument like no other band aside from maybe Polyphia.

      if you're on about the youtube volume level, this probably would've been to get the right input level in OBS for the screen capturing and camera recording. I would have been listening on headphones at a normal listening volume.

    It's not showing off vocal gymnastics, it's the way the music was written, it's an unchained melody, hence the name! No one can do it like this

    As a person that collects vinyl, and CDs and collecting music in other nefarious ways... I have no illusions about the quality of the two, in fact. Unless you are a DJ mixing a hardcore record, you'll never really notice the difference. And yes everything you have said is true and I have heard this argument since CDs came out and only the blind rabid fanboy could possibly and idiotically claim vinyl is better sound quality... I mean it is obvious, grooves cut into an object by a needle or a laser scanning millions of bits of data on a 5" circle. That can hold as MP3s a few hundred songs or in a higher format the album in near perfect replication of the band performing the music and the engineer boosting the quality of the recording eq using computers.... And yes, PVC is toxic, but so are cigarettes and drugs and alcohol.... 😅

    • @TheBunkhouseStudios
      @TheBunkhouseStudios Před 3 měsíci

      agree with your points. Although i'd say I 100% hear a difference with vinyl. A CD inherently doesn't have 'a sound' and neither does a CD player, it's a perfect digital representation of a recording, so the only variable is the speakers and the listening environment. Whereas with vinyl the quality of the pressing, condition of the vinyl, quality of the turntable and needle and cartridge will all have an impact on the sound. All these things give vinyl 'a sound' which granted some people like, but whether you do or not there's a very audible difference to my ears

    • @artblack01
      @artblack01 Před 3 měsíci

      @@TheBunkhouseStudios That's not 100% true, a CD and Vinyl are both created with a digital representation of recorded sound, yes both contain the exact same signal source, you can look this up, even if recorded onto a reel to reel it is still transferred to a digital source for replication. The difference is truly the quality is lost on vinyl because of groove imperfections in vinyl as well as having to lower bass frequencies so that the needle doesn't jump out of the groove. Hence, why you can hear a difference of any kind between the two.

      @@artblack01 apologies if I didn't explain well, that's exactly what I meant. I was talking about the mediums themselves rather than the source material. A CD is a perfect digital reproduction whereas a vinyl is not.
