    My Nikon Z6iii was quite expensive considering what the Z6ii was first priced at but the video specs are considerably better. No doubt Nikon will have a sale on it before Christmas.

    Well, It's nice to see you are not having the expected reflex reaction of protecting your purchase that others in the space are doing. I appreciate the honesty. I thought about the KX. I waited. I'm invested in Canon. I ordered the C400. I hope I made the right choice. I think I did. We'll see.

    Crazy discounts! Being a C70 owner since it's out it's very tempting to try it out. Anybody here use it with the DJI lidar as a solo filmmaker? Wondering how you guys deal with the focus and ND filters?

      I’ve never used the lidar thing. Looks cool though! I use element fsnd’s for my ND solution most of the time

      Just got the C70 and those internal ND's are just the best. The FX6 nd has pretty bad IR. The kippertie solution is not bad but it isn't as flexible or fast as the C70.

    I'm a weird person and I don't want one only because I want a RED Pro 5.0 sized screen from the DSMC2 line, and I think the new DSMC3 RED Touch 7.0 is too big. I have no idea if they're making a DSMC3 5.0 screen some day or not, but if they do, I'll totally pounce on a KOMODO X. I know I could go with a SmallHD touch, but, that seems like an incomplete solution to me. That old 5.0 screen was pretty good for what it was, back in the day when I got to play with the EPIC. Of course I'm most interested in an FX9II coming out more than anything right now. Price drop is pretty cool though!

      @@Kiywii oh they’ve taken great strides and Nikon is on the right track. The z8 is a fantastic camera-I just didn’t enjoy using it. Too many quirks for me. I’ll bet the Z8 II will be a home run. I have zero doubts about that

      @@TylerEdwards Nikon did not seem to know what they were doing when it came to video and copied from Panasonic and Canon but not enough to make complete sense. Now they have RED's expertise and need to put it to use. RED does have a strange workflow but NRAW has not been widely adopted.

    I've been doing a lot more corporate work this year and the Komodo/X price drops are so tempting. Probably won't do it though (because my current clients still won't care), but - it is tempting.

      Clients almost never notice the difference except a big camera vs a mirrorless haha. If KX doesn’t fill a gap in your workflow, I wouldn’t recommend it. Rent it to scratch that itch of shooting a project on a red and be done with it haha

    I just made a video about why I invested in the Komodo-x (or a cinema camera in the first place) You touched on a lot of my points. I could have gone Sony fx6 or any other camera but chose the KX because of the jobs I wanted to do. Not that it will necessarily get me more work, but it makes sense to own a system that will be in your workflow regardless. Agree that you shouldn’t buy based off resale value, but it would sting a little bit if I just purchased it new and couldn’t get it for the new price. Would sting even more if I were trying to sell and immediately have to drop the price by a large margin. Haha but it’s part of owning tech I guess!

      Ya timing will always suck for someone and will be perfect for the next person. That’s the nature of tech. Buy it if it fits your workflow. Renting is a perfect way to see if it will work too.

    Amaran is truly portable solution, you can hold it in your hand, you can carry it in a bag, while walking in the woods, filming some autumn scenes, you can attach it to the cheap stand you bought 12 years ago for your first Yongnuo 460 flash and $8 umbrella. LS 60d/x at the time of its release was positioned like portable light too, but this is far from the truth. With the power supply it is a very heavy unit. And it has some disadvantages: You can use amaran as a soft source, but LS 60 is not able to fill a regular 90cm softbox. The tilt mechanism with teeth is very "stepped", it constantly irritates me. The lens is very effective, but you can use a fresnel attachment on a regular source and get a good result. Also Bi-color X version of the LS takes a huge penalty for the output, but this is not the case for Amaran lights - D and X versions of Amaran almost equal in output. And it is worth to mention that at the time of release, a spotlight mini zoom was advertised along with LS 60d/x, but this is a bulky, heavy and not very effective combination. I think that Amaran spotlight made it obsolete. Overall, it seemed like they wanted to develop some system of these fixtures and accessories for them, as an alternative to Dedolights, but then they changed their minds and abandoned this system, along with other relatively consumer grade and inexpensive products from Aputure brand. Given all that, and the fact that they released a new, "S" version of the amaran, i would advise not to bother with the LS 60d/x if you just a mere mortal creator, and not some gaffer guy. It's a good product, but amaran is much more versatile.

    Looking forward to further updates, super interested in lowlight capability! I'm definitely in need of a lower spec camera to hand off footage to churches faster! Currently own a Komodo and Komodo X, have been entertaining the idea of trading my Komodo for a canon body and just having the KX + a Canon. I've done a lot of work with the Fx3 and it's amazing but I don't know if I'd own one just due to me having canon glass.       I need to do more testing but from what I’ve gathered, it’s a decent match to KX but the best b cam that I’ve used that isn’t red is the blackmagic 6k FF and in many cases I prefer the image of that over the KX!

    Camera CZcams is full of people just criticizing every camera for what it lacks and what others apparently do better. Your video was very informative and fair. However I myself have *one* criticism of the Zf: Nikon made this as a retro and thus of course photo centric camera. Their decision then to go with a rotating screen instead of a tilting one just doesn't make sense to me. The possibility to hide the screen cannot be reason enough for this decision. And if it would have been that important to the designers I would've liked to get a tilted screen that turns fully around.

    timecode is unnecessary if you use a program like pluraleyes or syncaila. it's 2024, timecode is obsolete for any serious filmmaker

      I didn’t get scratch audio for a multi cam shoot once (maybe twice..). I’ve been dreaming of timecode ever since. Obsolete? Never.

      What if you have audio sources that are far away from each other which become unsyncable via sound? What if one of the scratch mics of a camera was turned off by accident? What if I wanna sync everything in one fast click inside of Premiere without having to wait for PluralEyes to read all the audio/video files in my 2TB large project with multiple cameras? If you're doing a simple 1 or 2 camera interview with one mic, then PluralEyes is fine. But once things get more complex with more cameras and audio sources, timecode is a robust way to keep things smooth.

    Interesting! I don't know anything about Diety, man. I've been rocking with my boom mic for about 2 years. I got the Sennheiser mke-600 and that was love since day one. It's, as you probably know, an XLR mic, so I got a converter XLR to mini XLR for my Blackmagic, but now with the new boy in the house (the Komodo) I was thinking about getting an external audio recorder (by the way, the audio in the Komodo sounds pretty good), and I was thinking to get the Zoom H5, then the H6, to hook my mic directly into the external recorder, but they're a bit bulky..... then I heard about the Zoom F3, which also has 32 bit float, but I don't know where to place it.... ALL that to say that I'm confused and need to advise, lol. Thanks for all the good info as always!

      I’ve heard the f3 is the ticket for og komodo! Running the bright tangerine side plate gives you tons of mounting options as well. Definitely worth a look!

      I haven’t used one, but I’d venture to guess that the f3 pre’s might be better and it provides xlr 48v phantom power too right?

    It's hilarious the early previews of r5 ii say the wobble was fixed. Not even close, still terrible on the corners at in first minute of video. Pretty cool recorder though. Enjoy your content.

      I never used 4k60 on the z8 oddly, but I did use 4k120 NRAW quite a bit and I think that’s a huge miss on canons part with the R5II

    Don‘t you miss an assignable button to toggle waveform on and off? For me it‘s annoying to block a huge portion of my composition (especially in the evf)

    For film makers I wouldn’t even consider this camera. The Z8 has reached a peak in terms of what a hybrid camera can achieve. The R5C too with its many downsides such as the lack of IBIS, terrible AF and battery life. Now that red will ditch rf, it’s time to go Sony or Nikon. Canon is not gonna be the leader in hybrids.

      I used the z8 for a few months and although it is a great camera, the R5II is better for video with much better codec and color space options and way better AF. It also lacks a MI shoe to be able to utilize for audio like on R5II and Sony bodies. If Nikon puts R3D with RWG/L3G10 is their mirrorless bodies, that will certainly change the conversation. But for now, no, the Z8 is not peak hybrid based on my experience.

      @@TylerEdwards how is any of the r5ii codecs superior to the ProRes in the Z8 which is oversampled? The digital noise in the r5 is terrible the 4k raw has horrible artifacts. The r5c has a far superior image to that of the r5ii for video. Try rendering any of the raw video footage with the slightest NR applied to get rid of that digital noise and you’ll be looking at 3-5 fps export speeds on a fully specced out MBP. That’s terrible. The compressed raw of Nikon does much better in terms of usability.

      @@scottmh prores hq is great but impractical in most cases. That leaves nraw (which is good) and h265 4:2:0 compressed which is weird. R5II has a great 10-bit 422 codec with 4-channel audio. Also, the rec2020 color gamut is such a weird choice for Nikon. Canon cinema gamut is a much larger color space which does make a difference. The Z8 is a fantastic stills camera and I’d probably get it over the r5 for that and it has some great video specs, but I did not enjoy using it for video. Have you shot with the r5II on an actual project? I’ve used all three cams mentioned on actual projects and R5II checks many more boxes for me. R5c is great but it isn’t better-again this is coming from personal experience using both cameras. There’s definitely more to like about the R5c in terms of video centric I guess a more important question is what is your experience using all of these cameras personally? Maybe the z8 is better for your workflow 🤷‍♂️

      @@TylerEdwards anything 10 bit is easy to grade if exposed properly. ProRes is the easiest codec by far for all M1 Mac and above to edit. The only thing the z8 lacks is a great AF in video. Canon makes everything great around the sensor but the sensor. I’ve used it on one project and to me it’s another crippled canon move. I shoot mostly 50fps and above and the image isn’t all that good as its line skipped. The hardware simply doesn’t allow for enough cooling / power delivery. Add to that the complete lack of 3rd party lenses, it’s not looking like the hybrid of hybrids. What bothers me the most is that the r5c produces a much nicer image and that’s crazy, given they’ve had 5 years to upgrade. I use a hybrid as a b cam to my red. Whenever the red is too big or too slow I rely on it and I’d much rather rely on my r5c than the r5ii. I was really hoping for an upgrade but this isn’t it. With red being bought by Nikon and that future reds will have a z mount, I’d much rather invest in that system than a crippled canon one.

      @@TylerEdwardsprobably referring to the slight drop at lower ISOs when using electronic shutter for photo. Just a trade off of stacked sensor. Z63 by Nikon also has this issue. I feel like the applications where it’s even noticeable and matters are few and far between.

    Thanks Tyler.. with the recording time limits and file formats what is the best quality you think you can go to where overheating and camera turning off wouldn't be an issue? (1080p only..4k in a simpler format?) Ie. I would film the occasional long event like a wedding or a school concert.. so wondering if this camera could cope if I don't mind a bit of compromise on the really high end file formats? Thanks!
