It was the early 1950's Frank and Freddie Assunto and their Dukes of Dixieland had just started what would turn out to be a 3 1/2 year run playing at Hyp Guinle's Famous Door on Bourbon Street. About that same time drummer Paul Barbarin had just finished writing this signature tune and thought it only right to have these young and upcoming brothers and their band be the first to play and record it...it was an instant hit and to this day it is Bourbon Street's most recognized jazz tune.
The Assunto Dukes Tribute recognize and celebrate the Assunto legacy by playing great traditional Dixieland Jazz in the style of Frank, Freddie and Papa Jac Assunto.
“The Assunto Dukes" is the only band legitimately sanctioned by The Assunto Family, by The Estate of Frank Assunto. who, in 1950, started The Dukes of Dixieland(1947-1974), with his brother Freddie Assunto on trombone.
Frank and Freddie died tragically young, but in the 1950's and and 1960's, they sold millions of records, made countless TV appearances, and were called by Ed Sullivan, “The number 1 jazz combo in the country.”
Today, the band is made up of a solid group of top shelf musicians who appreciate, understand, and honor the legacy of the Assunto family’s contributions to New Orleans Jazz. They are a very professional group that always brings the best of New Orleans Jazz and history to every audience. While there is no intention of duplicating the music of yesteryear, the Assunto Dukes strive to interpret the repertoire to the best of their ability, relying on the influence and inspiration of the Assunto family. It is a firm belief of the Assunto Dukes that the music Frank and Freddie Assunto created, the Dukes of Dixieland(1947-1974), cannot be duplicated, the enthusiasm and musicianship will certainly be representative of the Original Dukes.

Hello Deano! By a lucky chance I've got a Reel-to-reel tape from my co-worker who found it in his grandfather estate last month. He knew that I'm restoring all kinds of older recordings - that's how I discovered The Phenomenal Dukes of Dixieland !!! This particular tape is Audio Fidelity AFST1860 - On Bourbon Street with The Phenomenal Dukes of Dixieland made in 1957. My research found that this tape was the First Full Stereo Tape in the format 4 track 7,5 ips commercially manufactured in the World ! Before diving in the long process of restoration I decided to find if a decent copy of this album is available - only Apple iTunes have a "remastered" copy in the lossless format - however it is very poorly done from stereo vinyl record and have more hiss and artifacts from noise reduction than the native scratches and noises on vinyl - so to me it was a no brainer to start restoration. Now my part is done and I'd like to share this joy of great music, talented musical craftmanship in full three-dimentional stereo quality. However most likely if I will post a video recording of a tape reel being played on my recorder - it will be removed on the copyright basics. But I want give it to you and your family who in my eyes are the only copyrigh holders. On the cover of the tape reel box under a photo of the band is written: "YOU HAVE TO HEAR IT TO BELIEVE IT!" No less no more - from the first note till the end of tape!
