THE SHAPER IS BACK
zhlédnutí 50KPřed 12 lety
The Shaper is back!! Inspired by and in honor of the great "The Axe is Back" videos, I decided to start this series. Like the Axe in Bushcraft and Backpacking, the shaper had fallen from favor in the machine shop, replaced by the vertical mill. Even in the home shop people were rushing out, like lemmings over a cliff, to buy one of the cheap import milling machines. In the past few years the sh...

I'm going to have to try this on my cheapo Chinese bench top lathe. My little bench top lathe does have a threading dial but, every time I've used that threading dial I've ended up with a cross-thread. No matter how slow the spindle is turning or how meticulous I am about taking the slack out of the lead screw, I always get the dreaded cross-threading.
I bought one of these for $50 from a guy who said he was "updating" to propane. Like new. Prettiest stove I own. Now I have 2 3 burners along with Gunny, my 426D.
I had been looking for a tutorial like this, thank you so much for sharing.
Just found your channel and subscribed. Very nice work. Thanks
Thank you very much. Working on a 1942 Lathe, with a super sloppy spindle. Cheers!
This is great thank you. I have a Metric Boxford BUD and trying to find a metric dial indicator for it is near impossible so knowing how to do this without the dial gauge is invaluable.
Damn clever
I have this sewing machine. It was bought the first year it was made. It was gifted from a neighbor. It has been great. i don't have the attachments. But I have used itto made. 120" x 120 inch quilt, qnd several others. It mends well, you need a leader and an ender to avoid your threat issues.
Very good video, learned something this morning. Thank You
this is infinitely useful!!!
Not a good test. Since the lead screw is 8tpi and you are cutting 8 tpi there is no position where it is out of phase. For cutting 8tpi you can engage anywhere at all and it will be registered correctly. This could work for other pitches.

Thank you, this is really helpful. I have a very old lathe with no threading dial and i find threading to be slow and stressful. This is going to help a lot.
I found this one of the best videos I ever seen thanks
Cheap sheet metal. Rust all the time.
I have a Coleman 428 powerhouse dual fuel. This is a holy grail of dual fuel power house Coleman’s. The device is no longer manufactured by Coleman I’ve had mine since 1991. Let me know if you ever want to sell it.
Thank you, this was very helpful. That aluminum spacer has broken on my drill press. Is there any chance I could commission a replacement made by you?
You put a lot more faith into that Harbor Freight stuff than I would. You were lucky. I have tried their left hand drills and they dulled in seconds.
I like the technique. Even though I have a threading dial on all my lathes, I am going to give it a try. Thanks for making the video.
Very logical, very simple method! Thank you very much!!!

Thanks! Just finished repairing a Sheldon with no dial and needed to learn to work without one.
Marking the spindle and leadscrew with a sharpie is genius. It visualizes the fact that they meet up on the same point after a defined number of revolutions.
Great video! The special boring bar tool holder/ tool post you made looks great too, very sturdy. I suppose two of the hexagon head screws are for rotational alignment of the tool, indexing on a flat? They might be fighting the clamping action of the whole block, or do you back them off before final tightening?
Thanks man. I have a 1940s south bend 9A without a thread dial, and I've been wondering about threading. Off to the shop to try this out!
Thank you, i will be trying this on my sb 15" O this weekend. Looks like yours may be an o series also?
This will come in handy- Thanks
Brilliant
Eating a breakfast like that with a shaper running in the background. Do you ever fear you have died and gone to heaven?
Your air rifle is smooth bore or sprial bore?
You're a great instructor! Not everyone who does so, does it well. I have an old Dalton Six type B-4, made in 1918, and this is exactly how it's done, except I have to manually swap out gears.
Can anyone tell me how long the poles are for this tent, and how many there are? Picked up a used one for a few bucks including the fly but it’s missing the poles.
Great info but question from a rookie . .. why did you use the compound at 29.5° angle to increase thread depth each pass and not just use the cross slide?
Quiero saber el precio por favor
I have one. It is fun to shoot! The plastic stock makes it feel cheap. The trigger is good. With pellets I am getting tight groups at 20 yards. With bbs I am hitting beer cans consistently at 20 yards and having fun! This gun is fun and accurate.
Daisy power line 880 is the best air rifle what you can buy
Say, thanks for this video, I just picked up my first Coleman 502 stove works real nice. I do have a question? After my stove has been running for a while the tank gets a bit hot, is that normal?
There is no grunting and groaning,, just roughly 70 pounds of pressure… I don’t understand why these people think it’s OK to change up and modify these procedures when South Bend specifically tells you how to do it,, unless that chuck is permanently attached to that spindle which I doubt then it should be removed… oh and if that test bar is sticking out 1 foot from the end of the truck then it’s actually sticking out 1 foot plus the length between the jaws and the spindle on top of that.. Catering or dealing in thousandths of an inch you are in no way accurate
That’s not the way to do that with the chuck on there.. your going through the chuck and whatever the hell is going on with that rather than directly attaching that bar through the spindle and nothing else….
Three burner white gas stove is no longer manufactured by Coleman. They do make a three-burner propane model. Wipe down you Coleman stove with WD-40 after use to remove grease splatter and dirt. It will prevent rust too.
Thanks for the tip
See Rustinox channel is very good and has a lot information
It's easy off and on the base if you know what you are doing! If you a once a year go to the lake...yeah...take it off and pump it up. Don't fill it more than 2/3 and it will last pretty good...maybe 3 times if you like to simmer!
Whats the cost??
I love this.
Was there no felts in there? Im working on an O series, almost identical , and have no felts, but its been monkeyd with in its 100 years.
So just bought one - using and weighing your recommendation. Unfortunately, the seller had just thrown away the chuck drift tool you mentioned. The Ryobi part number is no longer available anywhere. I got a lead that an MT3 size chuck drift tool will likely work. Any idea on that or other recommendation?
I would find a half nut attachment for the lathe. They are out there at a reasonable price. I would think that any lathe with a quick change gear box, should have come with one or at least mounting holes for it.
Nice, exactly what I needed!
Clever !
good boy dont shoot bbs in a rifled barrel thats right good job my man
