GRACIOUS INSTRUCTIONS.
So, I had a discussion with a guy here about the notch being used as a stress reliever that was ultimately fruitless and ended in a stomp out by the other party whom I thought could have been on to something. Long story short, his claim is that the projection in the Kaudi reinforces the notch and does not create two small stress risers and that an uninterrupted semicircular notch would be weaker than having the projection. Who knows, he might be right but couldn't/wouldn't explain. For anyone else who might stumble on this, I can't make heads or tails out of what this guy was on about. If someone who can actually explain how the kaudi might be a stress reliever, I'd like to know but for now, my search continues. My overall argument is that if the notch is a means to add a flex point and draw out the moment of impact slightly, then maybe it could have some effect but, then I would argue that the projection isn't really helping since it just creates two small stress risers and if anything is a weakness if we drill far down into the weeds. For anyone else who might be confused as to what I'm getting at: take a piece of paper and cut a semicircle into the edge and then on another spot, cut a V. Grip the two opposite ends and put them under tension by pulling them apart. You will find that one will rip far sooner than the other. And what the hell, make a kaudi style cutout and do the same. If that's not enough for you, you can do the same with pretty much any ridgid, solid core material (nothing big, don't hurt yourself). Use something to act as a beam and cut a semicircle under it on one and then cut a v notch into an identicle beam in the same location and depth. Support it at two ends and then put a light load over the cut. Increase the load on both until they break or deflect and see which one goes sooner. You'll also find that keeping the depth of the semicircle the same but increasing the radius (moving the axis further away from the edge of the part) will yeild a different result. And obviously, the depth of the cut will be very important as well.
Oh, now you've done it. You're going to piss off a lot of people shattering their favorite myth. I hope you at least gave it some blood before putting it away or it might get angry and start hacking up the house.

Sorry i'm extremely late to the party. Can i ask what stain you used in this video (if you can remember) TIA 😬
Nice sling how did you made it
what did you insert into the handle (drilled hole)?
The lead or plug of wood?
Thanks. I read later on where you used lead. Mighty fine work sir. @@StonesSticksBones

I mixed lead from my airgun pellet trap (essentially lead dust and bits of lead foil) with ultra slow-set epoxy. Made the mix, vac chambered it for half an hour to pull out the bigger bubbles and packed the cavity. Worked a treat and I knew that there was no way it'd split the head of my stick, which I did when I tried a hot pour.
Thanks for that tip. I will do that. 👍

Sticks'n'stones : What kind of wood stain did you use? Looks cool
This one was just varnished!
I'm gonna B A 🐔 💩 & use lead shot & epoxy 🐓
thats nice
Great video. Were sticks aged and smoked before working into shillelagh? Or after? I know they usually age and trwat for 3-4 years
Most I've heard are that smoked are done after working, though there's many, many different methods
looks well made but too small, this would be good for chopping a young tree down so you could make a bigger axe lol
Beautiful. I bought my first shillelagh for hiking, and now I’m obsessed. Awesome work.
Wood? Thx
This chap was beech
Nice builds
Is that lead/steel? inserted into the face of the Patu for power enhancement?
Lead
Nice !! I am on my own weapon making journey myself and have made my own version of the Shillelagh as well as knob handle canes and paddle clubs and Native war clubs. Don"t you just fall in love with making them ? I know I have .
Unless one is going to be an executioner, IMO weighted handles are overkill and possibly counterproductive for most situations. I consider my 39 inch Blackthorn stick as primarily a striking weapon with the small end, perfect for a vicious stray dog. It would work for the 2-legged kind of problem too, should that ever arise, using thrusts to the torso mixed with two-hand whipping strikes to the head/neck and one-hand backhands to his knees.
OUCH !!!
Yep, enough lead to make it worth the work is enough to slow it too much for me - my blackthorn is whip-fast and will break bones as is. I do see the use though - not everyone fights that way. A nice loaded stick would still make me feel plenty safe, I'd just have to adapt. I made an oak stick for my wife with a handle made of copper pipe that's filled with sand (lead-loading is illegal here) and the 45° butt-cap has a silver British £1 coin soldered to it that will hurt a lot.
Not to mention it’s just dumb. If you used a modified shillelagh with lead in the head to defend yourself you’re 10000000% going to prison no matter what if you’re in the U.K. A normal shillelagh is a walking stick and there’s no way to prove you carry it for self defence, as long as you don’t get carried away when using it you’d be fine legally speaking. As soon as you modify it and add lead it becomes an offensive weapon and you’ll get time whether it was self defence or not. Make a brass head for it as a decorative piece or something else that’s legal that has the same effect, don’t do what the doofus in this video did unless you wanna go to prison.
I put a nail crosswise through the hole before I pour the lead in. That locks it up good.
Cool.
I put a big piece of round stock of brass in mine and carved a shamrock ☘️ in it
Very nice sir 👍🏻
Very good content and woodwork.
How to make that black color? Just paint?
Or woodstain
Thank's for answer
The one my Grandfather left me was hung over a peat fire in the chimney for 6 months, I believe that's the traditional way.
This channel is bad ass !!
Nice
That's a walloper
It's a real English walloper runs this channel 😂
Freaky
The Shillelagh I carried when I was in Law enforcement was thicker and had a bigger knob head. It got the job done keeping criminals in check. It was made for me by an elderly Irishman who was once a policeman in Ireland 🇮🇪. I still have it.
What do Americans and English know about Shillelaighs 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
@@SimonTimoney-74 I can't speak for anybody else but I'll tell you one thing I learned about the sheleighly from an Irishman who was a cop in Ireland 🇮🇪 and made it for me.
@@SimonTimoney-74 you have a lot of Irish Americans here in States. And those Traditions have traveled with their families when they settled in the United States. So contrary to what you may believe my man there is a lot of Irish-Americans here who have know and understand what a shillelagh is
