Thank you so much for the tips! I’m hoping to create my own documentary that requires interviews. I have an issue with uncomfortable silence even in every day conversation (ppl think I’m an extrovert but I’m actually an introvert who HATES uncomfortable silence, so I fill it in as much as possible lol). That last tip will help me tremendously. It’s okay to leave a bit of silence so the other person can fill it in with more information before I start to follow up! Thank you so much
Great video. Great content expertly presented. Thanks.
Hope it helps!
Very good video .Very helpful but what were the black and white movies you used.I know one of them was Charade but what was the other black and white picture.?
Spellbound with Ingrid Bergman and James Stewart, and the other was Sabrina (which I highly recommend) with Audrey Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart
this is all i need thank you
You’re welcome man! Good luck out there
Love your video style. Stylish but not pretentious, lots of CZcamsrs are like that.
Thank you! Kind of you to say
@@BillThisdell Also, you got to the point really quick but didn't sacrifice on making the video too short. Something about your editing felt very brisk without rushing. You also told it like a story and threw me right in instead of just rambling in an unstructured, but flashy way like other youtubers.
@@normietwiceremoved honestly that’s wonderful feedback! I do hope to make more videos in the future (when I have something to talk about) so this has given me reassurance, thank you
Hey! Film studies student here, do you need legal documents to film at certain places or it usually okay to ask an owner to film freely?
If the owner grants permission you should be good
Thanks, where did you find your archival footage? Was it all public domain?
archive.org has a lot of footage in the public domain, WWII stuff is mostly from US Army public broadcasts
This is a great video. Beautifully put. I was doing a documentary myself on a very eccentric eye doctor who we connected on the subject of collecting. I presented a release form and he singed willingly. The first day was awe inspiring. I even brought him something for his collection. Our conversations were going great and the "why" I asked about collecting lead to so many deep conversations about religions, sex, marriage and love that all seemed to be in conjunction with the things he collected. This was the first day, the first shoot. In the second shoot, there was a tonal shift in the comfort. I asked if i could come back to shoot while he was working, he said my paitents would not like that. I also asked to follow him around while he went on collecting trips, he said, "No, it would be illegal." I also had location release forms. The man who was the subject told me he tried to look me up on the internet with a retired police officer to see who i was. He didn't want these stories ruining his reputation as a doctor if it were to get out, even though he said, on camera, "you put whatever you want in". He was now afraid of being called) "the antichrist". He asked, "what was i planning in doing with this movie?" I said, "i want to release this in festivals. I panicked but tried to reassure him this would be a story about your life as he also signed a relase form. He wanted me to cut all the controversial or in depth stuff about marriage out. I could still not comfort him. So I told him I am sorry and we can just go our separate ways from here. I shelfed what I had and never released it in respect and my own self-preservation. I didn't want to put him through sleepless nights as I didn't want my self to feel worried I would have police knocking on my door.
This is very interesting 🤔 It is helpful and useful ❤ Thank you so much! I will definitely do it. 😊
I’m so glad!
that short, but suprisingly insightful
Thanks hope it helps!
Wonderful showreel Bill. Next time you are looking for a narrator/vo pro talent think @waltdevoice
I am filming a documentary for my thesis project and I wanted to know if you should ask the subject the question that you are asking and then record or ask the question while you are recording
Ask the question while you are recording. You never know when the subject will say something interesting so just leave the camera recording for the entire interview.
Hi Bill, you chose an angle that might never bring you the million subscribers you deserve. But I just wanna let you know that your content is worth heaps to me and probably a whole lot of people around here. Thanks you for all

This video - this channel - shows everything that is eroding about CZcams. You should not have made this video. The high quality of production and the professional level of insight is just far too good for CZcams. Your channel deserves many more subs and this video deserves more views.
Thank you Gary, glad you found some value! I feel like CZcams is a good place to experiment with style and writing these videos helps me distill my thoughts.
Thank you so much Bill, for being vulnerable by sharing the truths uncovered in the process of documentary filming. As a current student of journalism, one of my tutors instilled the importance of finding that one character to focus on when it comes to feature articles and I felt this would be applicable also with the making of a documentary. Seeing your video here is divine timing as I potentially embark on the journey of creating a documentary...
Finding that perfect character makes everything else so much easier. No potentially - do it! Wishing you best of luck with your doc!

Quick question: Any good tips for a platform to find archive footage ? Working on a cultural video and need to present some part of the history of Argentina. Really struggling to find relevant footage for this part :/

I’m planning a documentary about Santa Cruz Island in California
I’ve been to Santa Cruz! What is the documentary subject
@@BillThisdell I just have done some historical research and have a handful of stories to tell, starting with some native lore, then the Spanish era, and Nidever, who saved the lone woman on San Nicholas, there’s some early Hollywood history, bootlegging, some dynasty feuds…and recent stories about sea urchin divers, Jacques Cousteau, and island packers. It all wraps back around to the Chumash still performing channel crossings in their traditional vessels and creating a new preserve. I’m really just a mom with an iPhone but have a tiny little CZcams channel, so I’m planning to post it there. It has no budget. I’m planning on interviewing a handful of people. It seems to be shaping up.

I love "dating" people😂! I've been doing it since I was a kid... I love getting intimate with strangers through conversations. My earliest memories are sitting on the stairs listening to people's stories. Getting them to open up to me the first conversation and me purely listening without judgment.. I love those small moments and those connections. Their stories sre poerful... their struggles sre incredible and they deserve to be honored through storytelling❤
I know exactly what you mean! What is it about stairs as a perfect spot for intimate chats? You could do a series called “Stair Stories” or something haha

Hey do you have tips for making a 2-3 minute short docu/interview? like how to get the artist to drop really impactfull oneliners and how to get the viewer to search more about the artist?
Hey man, I'd focus on a single moment in their life (or whatever the subject is -- make it very focused). Any great story usually has a goal and an obstacle, so if you can get your artist to speak about what they want and what was stopping them, that's usually a good format. Think about it in terms of emotional peaks and valleys, rather than a series of events. Series of events = AND THEN this happened AND THEN this happened = less interesting Emotional = goal BUT THEN challenge BUT THEN growth BUT THEN resolution As for impactful oneliners -- if they say something interesting but ramble on a bit, you can always ask them to repeat themselves in a tighter soundbite. But focus your questions on how they felt to get more interesting answers.
What a great video!! I have a small channel that is growing real fast so I need all the help io can get. This was super helpful
