Why the slot in the collect? Also, doesn’t the slot affect concentricity?

If you were going to start building today just for a home hobby ...what equipment would you start with knowing what you know now? Ive been looking at these Precision Mathews lathes, Taig 5c headstocks and or just buying some abec 7 bearings and pillow blocks w/ vslot rails?
