    Great talk!!! I really enjoyed the perspective on something that is always a challenge: finding the most effective names. The insight about how the the importance or meaning of a name can change as it's context changes; like when horseless carriage was introduced and required the domain model to rethink "Engine".

    I need a simple image display for my project (tagging and ranking images). The Glimmer `image` and related methods are entirely unsuited for that. Displaying an 800x600 image takes literally minutes on a Macbook Pro. First few times I thought my code had crashed. But no, it seems it was calculatung all the pixels so it could render them as inidvidual rectangle controls. Just noting that here in case anyone else has an idea to use this library for managing/displaying image media. It doesn't appear ready to do that yet.

    29:55 why sonething like this classs is hard to test? you have a constructor with the only one dependency and each method makes reference to attributes on this parameter object, delegate is easy to test as well, i don't get it, why is hard and why you can use openstruct in a dynamic language like ruby, openstruct is really helpful for declaring dummy object

    There is one thing that is not clear to me, yet When would you use a PWA, when a turbo based mobile app and when a native mobile app? Does anyone know the answer?

    • @kevinvzb
      @kevinvzb Před měsícem

      If you imagine 3 stages of complexity for offering a mobile experience for your users: 1) PWA: minimal dev effort, no interaction at all with app stores and mobile ecosystems 2) Turbo/Strada hybrid app: modest dev effort, some knowledge of mobile development required + interaction with app stores, etc and 3) full mobile app, immense effort, most likely requiring dedicated developers. Enabling PWA is the fastest and cheapest option if you're operating on limited resources, boostrapping, a solo, or crunched for time. It also helps if you want or must keep a single codebase in Ruby and not mess with Swift/Java/Kotlin, or avoid app store fees and red tape. Conversely, of all possible ways, it's the least "native"-like, but considering the minimal effort, it's a very acceptable tradeoff imo.

      @alessandromacagno4127 Před měsícem

      HIi @haroldpepete thanks for watching and for your comment. I do write tests for my personal projects, especially when I am learning something new. The only difference when testing a personal vs a professional project is that I don't test all the edge cases so I don't get distracted from what I am practicing. What about you?

    I'm not really sure what point he's trying to get across with this talk. Most background jobs are a combination of IO and CPU intensive computations so they are not going away any soon. . Async IO with fibers has been around for some time now and what we've learnt already is that writing async IO code in Ruby makes the code much more complex and way more difficult to run. So again, what kind of "Async Future" he means?
