    My Dad bought a used Super M Farmall from a local IH dealer in early 1960's It pulled a 3 14" rope trip plow. I learn to drive it when I was 13. The clutch was nearly impossible to push in to change gears. Diffcult to turn around at the ends even with that roller ball brake assembly they put on it. The gas lever was worthless, jumping out of its notches back to idle a lot, put a new one on it same thing. But at 13 I thought I was really something getting to drive this thing all day plowing, and that exhuast pipe turning white from burning that good ole leaded gasoline. In comparsion Dad also had a WD Allis-Chalmers. I was driving it at 12. Much easier tractor to drive, nice hydraulics. I really miss those days.

    I remember driving past FARMALL as a young kid with Mom & Dad, the west yard full of brand new RED tractors, pallets of rims, red fronts and silver rears. When I graduated from college I thought I'd won the lottery when I got my summer job from the year before back. But about 3-4 months later it became a part-time job, and I was at the bottom of the seniority list. When I'd get a day off I'd head to Moline & Rock Island, I have no idea how many 5"x8" application cards I filled out for the IH E.Moline plant, and never got a call. Then one day I'm heading down to downtown Rock Island looking for the place to take the Gov't Service exam to get employed at the Arsenal, but I go by this HUGE iH plant, I drive around the office and see the EMPLOYMENT OFFICE, I park, walk into an empty waiting room, I wait about 5 minutes when a guy in dress slacks & white shirt & tie walks past the door into the offices, He comes out and asked, " Can I help you?" Yes, I'd like to apply for a job. He asks if I'd applied there before, "No", He gives me the 8 page application. 10 minutes later he comes back, asks if I was done with the application, "Yes", I had ALL my past work history and references written down or memorized. Took me 5 minutes. The next morning I'm back driving my ready-mix truck, first time all week, on Thursday, BOY this week's paycheck will be small. My first load of concrete takes me past home, little did I know my new aquaintance from the day before is on the phone with Dad wanting me down to FARMALL for my physical and other tests on reading & writing aptitude. I'm at the job site, pouring the floor & base for a grain bin, and DAD pulls in the yard. He tells me "FARMALL wants to talk to you". I park my truck and tell my dispatcher I had to take the rest of the day off. This is all on Thursday, I'd worked Monday & Thursday, and FRIDAY I started at FARMALL. Seems like they had me is Saturday to work too, I was running an industrial parts washing machine, washed wide front end axle castings, the outer frt axle extensions, power steering cylinders, and as the days, weeks, and eventually months piled up I learned how to build most of the whole front axle. Then the day the foreman comes over, says I'm laid off, I head back to the employment office, and see my Employment Manager, He comes over and asks if He could help me, I tell him I'd just been laid off, really no surprise to him, He says, Give me a day or two, I may be able to get you back, which he did as a PRODUCTION SCHEDULER of a gear and shaft machining dept, I mostly chased parts out of the warehouse, into the plant via purchasing, and from other departments. This all lasted 3-4 months, and Black Friday comes, laid-off again. And within about a week, maybe sooner I get called in and interview with this supervisor, I'm going in Material Scheduling, chasing parts from suppliers into the plant, I chasing tires, wheels, rims, O-rings, batteries, clutch pressure plates and friction disks, and to fill my free time I can chase paint. I have this job for 3-4 years. Ohhh, I had Elwood Mfg also, the front wheel assist axle supplier. I had worked chasing parts in from the IH East Moline plant for a month or two, and the IH Canton, Ill plant, and Melrose Park engine plant. The guys at East Moline were terrible to work with, Canton not so bad and the engine plant guys were O-K. All this lead to a 30 year history of chasing automobile shredder part's and machining at local suppliers, Machine tool parts for mills and stuff, and finally getting parts for water softner timer clocks, Oh, and there was a couple years chasing parts for ice cream freezing machines that make and dispense thousands of gallons of ice cream per day to ship to retail sellers. I lived in the Quad-Cities till I relocated my family to Freeport, Ill to buy drinking fountain and water cooler parts for a couple years So much manufacturing experience doing so many processes.

    Growing up we had IH tractors and trucks on our farm. My father had IH construction equipment and trucks as well. I had a Scout in high school. Then years later in my business I bought and old IH R-190 truck that I wish I still had today. The first time I drove at 6 years was in a hay field picking up hay My father put the truck ( a R-200) in first gear and I had to stand up to steer it to drive around the field while the helpers threw bales on the trailer.. The good old days.

    I’ll never forget where i was and what I was doing when I found out IHC had died. I was 7 years old when my dad came home and told my brothers and me that IHC was out of business and there would be no more new IHC tractors on our farm. I started crying

    • @observant98
      @observant98 Před 2 lety

      A lot of adults cried that day too. Factory workers there, retirees, dealers and loyal Farmall tractor owners. I talked to a dealer and sat at a large gathering of dealers when the announcement was made that they were taken over by Case. Some of the dealers lost their franchise as the Case dealer was appointed. However there was more I H dealers that became the dealer and the Case dealer was eliminated. Many farmers couldn’t understand this. Case took over I H but at the dealer level the IH dealer took over the Case dealer. The existing IH dealer was financially better off.
