Gardening with John Soulsby
Registrace 2. 01. 2020
For over 6 decades, I've had the incredible opportunity to pursue my passion for all things horticultural. Throughout the past 50 years, I've been involved in importing flowers, plants, and Christmas trees. As a specialist grower, I've dedicated myself to cultivating exhibition vegetables, with a focus on leeks, onions, and carrots. In 2009, I broke the world record for the largest leek. Although that record has since been surpassed, it was a testament to the exceptional quality of my original stock.
In 2008, I had the honour of participating in the TV series "The Great British Village Show," where I secured first place. This experience not only allowed me to showcase my talents but also granted me the opportunity to meet the then Prince Charles and Camilla at High Grove. I have been a guest on many radio stations and have done many lectures up and down the country.
If you have any specific questions or would like to hear any tips related to my expertise, please don't hesitate to ask.

Absolutely fantastic show, well done all involved 👍.
Hi John when can we order Onions and Leek Plants
Wow , brilliant leeks id love to be able to get a couple that big next year John I might enter them then😁👍
Looks a fantastic show John, sorry couldn't make it as on holiday, but will definitely be there next year mate👍
i found this fascinating even though i don’t grow leeks x
Beauties.
Well done all!
Looks absolutely fantastic 👌
John I might grow Pot Leeks next year for my local show. I should not get any competition.
The billy read show
Wow, those tomatoes are amazing looking. Im definitely going to look for those varieties to grow next year
Amazing onions!
I so miss the Leek shows, having moved away from the NE.
@@garyblake4296 hi Gary, show time is a great time of the year. I will post a few shows on my you-tube page.😄
Beautiful 👍
Sorry to hear you’ve had covid John! 🥴 have you managed to taste a Gerald’s Mystery as yet?
@@mzundastud07 yes we sure have. And it was worth the wait. Not the heaviest cropping tomato and not the best shaped tomato, but I would definitely place it as one of my favourite tasting toms. It has no hard core and is full of lovely flesh. Definitely on my future grow list if I can get some seed out of them. Thank you for the original seed. 😋
@@gardeningwithjohnsoulsby1131 you’re welcome! Flavour wise I think it’s exceptional! Agreed not the heaviest cropping! But well worthy of it’s place every year! Not a huge seed producer, but you will deffo be able to save some! I’ve found it’s true to type as well when I’ve saved seeds 👍🏼 glad you have enjoyed it as much as I do! 🙌🏼
What is the reason for the crispy leaves?
@@notforwantoftrying1 having covid and missing two days watering and not having shading in the greenhouse. Totally different in the Polytunnel with shading.
Back in a year or 2?? I pull them out and jet wash the block paving and it’s back again in 3 weeks 😤
Hello John, I have started to blanch my C.S.C. pot leeks, and I have noticed one leek has started to lean quite a lot just above the barrel. What will cause that? Also, another leek has one of the flags dying back about five flags up from the barrel. I have never had this before.
@@colinhiggs8751 Hello Colin, the leek that has started to bend above the barrel has more than likely got botrytis around the root plate. This will only be on one side of the root and is more than likely to stop the plant from growing on that side, hence the bend above the barrel. As for the flag dying higher up the leek , suggests to me you are likely to lose the leek with bacterial brown rot. This normally turns very smelly and the centre of the leek where the flags meet will turn into a wet decaying rot. I water my roots with Amistar to try and prevent both of these problems happening.
Thanks for the information. I will dig them both up tomorrow and sterilise the soil.
I have dug both leeks up. The first one. I couldn't see any botritus on the base of the leek, but it did look brown and hard on the base. The other one was, like you said, it had gone all brown and mushy where the flag joined the stem.
I’m assuming the same basis for espalier grown apple tree? Ours needs a really good prune.. we missed it over winter, but really want to get back on top of it this year, would you suggest a light prune now and then a heavier prune in the winter?
@@mzundastud07 yes you assume right. Take the new growth back by at least a third and then in winter after leaf drop you can do any serious pruning. Cutting out any over crowded branches.
@@gardeningwithjohnsoulsby1131 thank you! Will get on to it! 🫡
Thanks John that saves me asking, my Welsh Seedlings have opened so I'll start to shave them
Thank you for the video. I'm sure a lot of non giant leek and onion Gardner's would appreciate more general garden tutorials like pruning apple trees etc. Your presentation and no nonsense approach is just the job. P.S. what variety is the apple tree? Thanks again.
@@malcolmhill691 hello Malcolm , I will take your comments on board and try to cover a wider range of horticulture. Thank you.
@@malcolmhill691 this tree is Discovery.
Nice one, cheers John
Hi John. I am looking to set my leeks away in second week in October. Should i shave heads now.
@@gerarddodds7784 some breeds take longer than others to produce grass and it depends on the condition of your stock plant. I would try and shave the head just as you see the flower head start to produce its first seed pods. Don’t let it set seed as the plant may not produce any grass.
Very nice leeks John is it hard to find giant veg seeds.
@@darraghkelly6417 there is a giant veg site on Facebook and they sell various giant seed. I will have leek and onion seed later in the year. Most of the leeks I grow are not from seed. If you take a look at my video on shaving leek heads you will see the way I clone the parent to produce identical young plants. If you grow exhibition leeks from seed you will not get plants that grow alike. There will be a variation of shape and size from the seed. But it’s always interesting as you may end up with a new improved strain for future cloning.
Hi john last four videos fantastic and informative on another matter if i bought clover compost john inis no2 would it be ok for next year would it loss quality yours steven yorkshire
@@stevenwalker408 pleased your liking the short videos. I don’t like using old compost I buy fresh for greenhouse work every year. I re use my spent compost for potatoes, tomatoes and hanging baskets.
Hi thanks as ever top info
Very interesting. Would the shaving procedure also work for decorative alliums?
@@credenza1 I have never tried with the ornamentals but it’s worth trying to get clones of the parent.
Very entertaining and inspiring to see such well grown plants. Ive been reading about the properties of wormwood, and apparently it does deter thrips, as well as nematodes - also used in organic gardens to prevent powdery mildew.. It is claimed that a wormwood plant will depress powdery mildew for 100 foot radius.
They look tremendous and that’s some set up you have John 👍
@@albertbell7120 thank you Albert.
Great onions! Are thos HPS lights? If so why those over some LED's? I would assume LED is much cheaper though maybe not as long living? Perhaps diatomaceous earth may be better than talc due to it's content of silica it will dry the skins much faster and will kill any insect that touches it (no need for clothes), it also would remain food-safe and can be consumed after, I know there are some concerns about talc powder where it is mined. I am a big fan of DE maybe you could experiment?
@@justtus Thank you for the suggestions. I have LED lights in the open greenhouse but I still find the HPS more effective in producing results much quicker. I also use DE with my compost mixes to help with the control of scarid fly. I will take your advice and try some for ripening the onions. Thank you for your suggestion .
John what is the main cause of show leeks shreading thanks
@@BungalowBilly1 hi Billy, There are certain breeds more prone to shredding than others. Usually shredding is caused or can cause a hole in root plate. The York Giant, CSC, and the Blue can do this.
Thanks John, I do enjoy and learn from your videos, so much so I lifted my biggest onions yesterday ready for the village shows in August, biggest was 1lb 4oz from pips. When do you start your large onions from seed? Are they Kelsae?
@@AlmostOrganicDorset the guys that grow for 15lb onions set them mid October and use lots of growlights to advance there plants. For large quality bulbs I start early December, they are given 12 hours a day artificial light for about 4 weeks. The seed is my own seed .
@@gardeningwithjohnsoulsby1131 Do you sell seed John?
@@AlmostOrganicDorset yes if they get pollinated, lack of pollinators this year. Usually ready late October
Hi John what show are the 8oz onions for please bigger onions tremendous yours steven yorkshire
@@stevenwalker408 the North East Horticultural Society show held in Beamish museum has several onion class’s, that is where all my onions are heading. Try to come and visit the show on 7/8th Sept. It will be one of the best shows in the country.
thanks John I normally I lift mine 3 to 4 weeks for my show my small ones aren't as big as yours you never stop leaving will be up at beamish steven yorkshire
Belters John 👍
Thanks. John
How are your tomatoes doing John? Can’t wait to see what you think of the flavour of the Gerald’s Mystery if you started some off for this years grow? 🙌🏼
@@mzundastud07 yes I have some plants growing but not ripe at present. They won’t be long.👍
@@gardeningwithjohnsoulsby1131 that’s great! Can’t wait to see what you think of them! 🙌🏼
Nice video sharing ❤
Hey John , I'm still following your updates as you do them. All my onions doing well but biggest is currently 7.5 inches round. Watering every Sunday with liquid seaweed as you advise. There's a few weeks to go yet so I'll keep at it. The onions I put outside have all failed again for the 4th year. I'm videoing once a month as we progress through the season so at least you'll see how your plants progressed as each month passes. I'll upload once everything is finished for the year. Cheers mate. Hi John, I would like to know when you should start blanching pot leeks for September shows.
@@colinhiggs8751 Hi Colin, I will do a video to show people when and what to do about shaving stock heads for grass, and when to Blanch leeks for there shows. As a general rule you can work back six weeks before your show to Blanch leeks nice and white.
