In 2023, just 11% of Tesla owners that swapped into something else went back to gas. Yep, 11%, not "more than half" as some reporting has said. Let's dive into the data and see what Edmunds and others got wrong. The key thing about Edmunds' data is that it's collected from dealerships. If you didn't know, Tesla (and others) sell direct. This is critical because a whopping 70% of Tesla owners or lessees that swapped into another car, got another Tesla. What did the rest do? 13% swapped for another EV, 11% went back to gas, 4% opted for a mild or full hybrid, 2% got a PHEV and 1% opted for a diesel. So where does this data come from? It's from S&P Global Mobility, the gold standard for loyalty, sales, and conquest data. They pull all the car registration data every month from every state and crunch the numbers. (Yep, your registration data is far from private.) They match households that dispose of a car (whether that's a trade-in, sale, end of lease, gifted to someone, etc) and then see what those same households buy or lease next. From January 1, 2023 to February 29, 2024 (the extra 2 months ensure that replacements have been captured since sometimes it takes a while to sell a car and replace it, or replace a car and sell your old one) a total of 60,022 Teslas were "disposed" of in the USA. (Industry term.) Of those 60,000 Teslas leaving garages in America, 42,244 new Teslas took their place. What about the rest? 7,710 went back to gas, 6,385 got another EV, 2,344 opted for hybrid power, 946 gave a PHEV a whirl, and 393 opted for a diesel. Unlike some outlets, we need to “qualify” this data with some asterisks. Between 2008 and 2023, 80% of Teslas ever sold in the USA were sold between 2020 and 2023. That’s why the “Teslas disposed of” number seems so low at 60,022, most just aren’t old enough to even be at the end of their lease. Currently some 70%+ of all Teslas on the road are under 4 years old. This means that the Teslas people are getting rid of skew heavily toward Model S, X and early Model 3s. The oldest Model Ys in America today are just over 4 years old. When comparing data, beware that Edmunds does not say whether they combine mild and full hybrids, or mild hybrids with ICE and they don’t mention diesel at all. And there you have it. That’s the full story of Tesla trades.

355 plagued by reliability? hmmm. 480hp? hmmm. the concern folks have is that you have take the engine out when changing the timing belts. In fact you don't but they are belts and not chains so there is that. Mine has never broken down but I have gotten a slow down (you crazy man) light a couple times. 355 is not iconic? It's considered the best sounding v8 street ferrari ever. It's the last of the small Ferrari's, sorry Goldberg. If you shrunk to 6'2" and 250lb and you'd fit (barely) but I digress. I agree that it's probably not going to sell well for 900k. The stock car has 385bhp. there are 450ish hp cars on 92 octane and naturally aspirated and still have that 5 valve sound but it's going to be motor rebuild and a pair of motec's or similar.

Never got into the dealership modded stuff but they are cool.

The geopolitical environment prohibits the inclusion of the Chinese makers in the US and to some degree in Europe. If all global players were freely available for assessment the outcomes would be very different. Unfortunate as this limited consumer exposure to the total global EV market is thus incomplete. Hopefully the consumer will one day have access to greater choice especially with affordable level EVs.

Given that the old m3p did 0-60 in 3.2sec without rollout, there's no reason to suspect the new one wont do a 3.0 flat, 3.1 at worst. Quite a bit faster than the Hyundai, which is a very cool car, I like what they are doing, it's just far too expensive. In australia the i5n is nearly 30% MORE money. That's insane for something slower and heavier with less range.

Gents, the claimed 0-60 at 2.9 secs excludes roll out according to Tesla site and the article you were showing in this video! The new model 3 Performance is a sports sedan, but it’s no joke. That 0-60 time has been verified by several media outlets. I just ordered one, about $48k with rebate. I’d say that’s a hell of a lot of car and value compared to the $70k for a Hyundai that makes fakes sounds and mimics a ICE transmission. It’s an EV not an ICE vehicle, so what’s the point? If I want the roar of an engine I’ll get the real thing. To me, the Ioniq N will not age well, the Tesla will. Understated, fast, efficient, with vastly better range, price and it doesn’t look like a Pacific Rim robot. Just my ten cents….

The Forgestar X14 22x10 are 6lbs lighter still :) I have them on my 22 Lightning with 305/45R22, works amazing. The Forgestar are +30 and looks like the Carroll Shelby are +12 so they'll stick out more.
