You know Don and Mud's great call, the excellent camera work including having a camera on the family, and the broadcast's interview with Louis and Consuela. Tara's supporting scenes nearly tell the Dicken's story on their own. Anna Murphy (as Tara and the Ghost of Christmas Past) and Dan Stevens (as Charles Dickens) had an affinity that added to this marvelous screenplay. Murphy hits all the right notes literally in her first scene.

Friendship, kindness, generosity!
Sometimes, it takes bringing an individual to the brink before they'll realize the spite they have for someone is only a reflection of the inner bitterness they have towards the way they were treated in life. At that point, either they let go of the bitterness and move forwards or they let it fester. Dickens chose to let it go and it's through Scrooge that he learns to do that.

That this person is able to connect in a coherent yet fast discourse, politics, education, nuclear warfare and cmeth and homelessness means that reality, human reality, the concrete reality of California, in this case, must and can be addressed in not just an ambitious way but also in an intelligent one that does not demean persons, that does not demean politics and that does not trivialize, polarize, use the misery and depravity and danger that we live today, not only in the USA but in the whole world. I loved this movie, but I refuse to believe that Dickens didn't intend from the very beginning to have Scrooge be a changed man by the end of the story. If that wasn't the plan when Dickens started writing the book, then what was the point?!
To make money? Certainly Hollywood had a piece in how this story was told. However, the part of the movie about Dickens' heavy debt and string of flops leading up to A Christmas Carol is documented. Dickens also talked about how his characters become more real than the people in his life and how Scrooge became his personal nemesis. To me at least, it does have a ring of truth the way Scrooge's redemption unexpectedly mirrors Dickens' overcoming his own demons.

People like Scrooge don't realistically change to be better people, especially after being the same way their whole life

Dreher is a religious fanatic and a racist crank. He may name drop a party, but he doesn't know the first thing about solidarity.
