Another night of kite racing, but this time with a smaller fleet. The wind was offshore and super gusty. I got a DNS in race 1 because my kite fell out of the sky, and my camera didn't turn on for race 2. I was stoked to take some wins on races 2 and 3! I got a great start in this race, and an early tack onto port put me in the lead. I made a bad move at the top of the course and ended up getting disqualified for causing a tangle. I feel really bad for ruining his race, but luckily he was able to get redress. It was a good learning experience for me, in the future, I would go into a low mode and tack with the group. I know this is very very late but I had 2 questions to do with what the helm is doing: 1) What is the helm supposed to do with the jib sheet upwind? 2) What is the helm doing with the mainsheet downwind? For both of these why would you pull the sail in or let it out?

    • @juleeeee
      @juleeeee Před rokem

      Hello! 29er Helm here 👋🏼 On the upwind I always have the jib sheet in my hand and work with it. But that has a lot to do with the wind and wave conditions. Very basic: open it a little in light wind and close it tightly in stronger wind. I always open the jib before a tack, more or less depending on the wind. As soon as I have the jib sheet in my hand again, I close it back to the optimal position. On downwind, I'm also playing with the mainsheet. I open the main, luff a little to get pressure. With the pressure I go down again and close the main a little. That creates a little bit of a pump. Hope that helps!

      Yeah! I didn't like the rounding actually, I think I brought my kite down too quicky, and I dragged it in the water. I sort of knew that I had a gap behind me, but I think the thing that really got me was having to raise my kite up to avoid hers. It made me rise up on the foil, and then it was over haha.
