365 - Stefan Bean - The Rise of a District Superintendent from a war-torn, polio stricken childhood
Dr. Stefan Bean was born as Nam Le Thanh in Saigon in the early 70s of war-torn Vietnam. He was stricken by polio at the age of two, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down. Due to this debilitating disease, he was soon after abandoned by his parents.
He was later discovered sitting on the streets and taken to an orphanage where he was further neglected with little to no medical care. On April 6, 1975, as Saigon burned in the background, his future was forever changed with Operation Babylift- a humanitarian war effort to rescue Vietnamese orphans and unite them to adoptive parents in America.
Stefan has vague memories of that day; frantic staff grabbing orphans and their personal effects and loading them onto waiting planes. In the commotion, Stefan’s bags were loaded on the first plane and he was accidentally redirected onto the second plane. This mistake proved critical, because the first plane crashed 12 minutes after take-off killing 141 of the 149 orphans on board. This would be one of many examples where Stefan would see, “the finger prints of God on his life.”
Stefan escaped the war, but different obstacles awaited him in the US. At 4 years old, he was thrust into the foster care system and placed with the Beans who would eventually adopt him. Despite adoption officials’ warnings of Stefan’s health condition and recent trauma, the Beans adopted Stefan without hesitation. He would be one of 12 children; 2 biological and 10 international adoptees, in the Bean family.
From day one his parents encouraged Stefan to be independent and refused to see him as any less than any of their other children. Those early years proved difficult as Stefan grappled with English, adapted to a new life, and adjusted to normalcy after seeing unspeakable things during the war. If that wasn’t enough, he underwent multiple surgeries including muscle transplants on his legs and stomach. He also had pulmonary issues and most of his teeth were abscessed which required extensive dental procedures. But with the unconditional love and support of his adoptive parents he not only survived but thrived.
In his early years, Stefan was enrolled in public school, but when he wasn’t getting the support he needed, his parents transferred him to private school where he began to excel. Despite his physical limitations, he availed himself to things he could do in sports and extracurricular activities. Instead of being frustrated that he couldn’t play basketball or baseball like others, he would umpire sandlot baseball games and join student council and develop his public speaking. He was a straight A student, elected as sixth-grade class president and his eloquent speaking skills earned him an opportunity to make a speech in Washington D.C. advocating for the disadvantaged.
After high school graduation, he would receive a full scholarship from USC where he earned a BA in business administration.

    My advice to you two is: the best way I learned Vietnamese was I read A LOT OF "Truyen Chuong" translated to Vietnamese from authors like Kim Dung, Co Long, Quynh Giao etc. I left VN at a very very young age but my speaking Vietnamese is way much better than most of Vietnamese at my age even the ones in Vietnam. If you can understand Truyen Chuong" written mostly using Han Viet, then it's a breeze with conversations in Viet. PS: Warning "Truyen Chuong" is very very very very addictive.

    When the CCP claimed the "South China Sea", ONLY masses of South Vietnamese protested while the North Vietnamese up in the North DID NOTHING. I heard the Vietnamese police had to use really really loud speakers to disperse the crowd. The irony was the VC claims that VNCH was TRAITORS.

  • @TS-JungleMonkey

    It's quite funny that there are many many many Vietnamese, some even with "outstanding" academic/wealth/achievements without having to bribe anyone, whom could speak perfect English and no "white" person batted an eye-lid. But in Vietnam, any "white" person whom could speak very 'limited" Vietnamese, everyone looks up to that person. Why is that? In China, there is a word for that for the "white" people making a living like that. You have to find out what that word is.

  • @TS-JungleMonkey
    @TS-JungleMonkey Před 3 dny

    You two are confused and SHOULD know the difference between Vietnamese "cultures" and Vietnamese "government". If the citizens can't criticise the "government" and and have "any say" in how the country is run, then does the government represent the "people" or "cultures"? Life is GOOD for cashed up tourists and "some" Vietnamese got a better life as a by product after the massive "200%" corruption in the government. Yes, 200% corruption if you understand why it is 200%. Remember one key point is "governments" DO NOT own anything. Assets/resources belongs to its people BUT, in Vietnam, it is the other way around where officials own the assets which they "stole" from the people. Got it?

  • @TS-JungleMonkey
    @TS-JungleMonkey Před 3 dny

    "freedom of speech in Vietnam ...... has "certain" limitations", what a laugh! What is the ranking of "Freedom of the press" of Vietnam in comparison to the rest of the "world"? Is it 100? I just don't see the point of your podcasts apart from being a "mouth-piece" for a total dictatorial regime even when it is just a "little bit" better than Communist China.

    I want to say that it is normal for Vietnamese to always think China will invade. When the French colonized us China tried to fight them to control us but they lost. When we were fighting the French they had to put troops on the border with China because they were planning to invade us. Then they invaded us again in 1979 so of course Vietnam will always worry about getting invaded.

    the podcast you on already have a bias audience that mostly pro-america and very naive of all the bad things the US government did and very anti-communist vietnam so its obvious that all the comment are roasting you, dont even worry...you mentioned that people can really make changes fast at the local level is because Vietnam always has a top-down but decentralized at the local since the ancient time because of the structure and geographic in northen Vietnam. theres a saying "Phép vua thua lệ làng", you should find someone that has deep knowledge of ancient history and societal structures to interview. and if you notice vietnamese in Vietnam actually very proud of where they from locally and sometimes to an extreme that they are discriminate people came from poor provinces that makes the provinces compete with each other with different ways to govern to be better. About the sand mining, the rule is this, if local government cant deal with the issue gonna go up and when it gets big enough, the central(Trung uơng) will come but before that state's journalists will cover it and make a short report ~8mins on VTV the central state channel in the report the state's journalists will interview the local officials and thats basically the central asking the local officials to get it done at all cost otherwise central will get people down on the ground and heads gonna roll.

    I concur when she said that being Vietnamese means working toward reconciliation. Moving from Vietnam to Canada, I realized there is more division within the Vietnamese community than I thought, the differences between the Vietnamese in the diaspora and the Vietnamese in Vietnam. Lots of the Vietnamese in the diaspora have negative views about Vietnam, not just the politics but everything. We do need to understand both sides more, we do need to bridge the gaps, and each one of us needs to contribute to that reconciliation.
