Cute idea. I made a couple modifications. 1) I started with a magic circle. For the yarn I was using it made a tighter center. 2) I changed the chain 3 at the beginning of the round to a chain 2, 1dc, followed by the 2 dc for the corner clusters. Instead of squeezing in another dc at the end of the round to join, I join to the chain 2 right after the last front post dc.

R5: Ch 1, skip st, 17 hdc. 1 sc, skip st, 7 dc in next stitch, 1 sc, 7 dc in next stitch, 1 sc, 7 dc in next stitch, 1 sc, 7 dc in next stitch. Skip st, 1 sc. 18 hdc to the end of the row.
