Quick release, don't let the goalie get set. Pound it home.
The Theory of Competition
zhlédnutí 6KPřed 13 lety
The theory of evolution claims that only the strong shall survive. Maybe so. But the theory of competition says just because they are the strong, that doesn't mean they can't get their asses kicked. This isn't a math test... passion has a funny way of trumping logic.

The greatest moment in sport history and also in the 20th century are the two goals, The goal of the century and The hand of God, that Diego Armando Maradona Scores againts England at 1986 World Cup.
That’s when we had pride in America, and now these snowflakes are destroying us
I was working as an electrician through out the olympics doing everything and anything just a few days before I was hanging light fixtures in the mezzanine of the Field house then I found myself assigned behind the USA goal camera for the greatest game ever that I'll never forget, at the end of the 1st period the heat went out in the Russian locker room and I had to reset a breaker there to get it back on the KGB escorted me every inch of the way stood but thanked me for fixing the heat and gave me a 1980 summer Olympic Mockba (that we boycotted) solid gold lapel pin that I cherish to this day, then I went back behind the camera.
If only we had a patriotic president then
Those guys busted their butts against incredible odds, and I thank them for that! They earned their gold medals.
After watching this video how can somebody in their right mind kneel during the national anthem
I, like many, can watch the ending of this game many many times and still get tears and a lump in my throat. I remember where I was when I had heard the USA won. I’ll never forget the feeling of that weekend. Where ever I went there was such a feeling of pride and patriotism and when they won the Gold medal there was yelling and horns blasting. So great. To bad it was so long ago and could never happen today
Me and my HS hockey team went to the 10-3 game at the Garden, fortunately the drinking age was 18, the game sorta sucked, but the beers were good...
How many trans players did we have?
I was amazed that a major hockey tournament had no team Canada even mentioned. It was USA's time to shine
That’s how it’s done …women soccer team …get off your knees and take you head out of your ass …and see what patriotism is all about
.55 seconds to go and they never pulled the goaltender for the extra skater ….so good of a team , they never had to before …talk about an upset
I am in the ussr side, its not that i hate america of course!!!!
What an incredible call in the final seconds
Worked container ship at Port of Montreal when Finnish crew stormed out on deck screaming USA USA. They hated the Russians.
Am sure the Russian Hockey Team & Coach had much respect for the American Hockey Team & Coach 🍀
This the plot to mighty ducks 1 2 and 3 lol
My dad was PISSED it was a taped broadcast. Well, to make a long story short, WE (my brother, sister, mom, & dad) weren’t chanting “U-S-A when it ended. We didn’t always conform. WE sang “We Are Family” ( by The Pointer Sisters)! Dad die nearly 10 years ago now, but this win reminds me of how we COULD still feel like the others while still being ourselves. Thanks for sharing YOUR memories. I cherish hearing how everyone can feel like one, even when each is still (technically) different. 🙏❤️
Watched it at 10 years of age. It still brings tears to my eyes. Proud to be an American
yeah...and for most Americans, "Who do you play for??" Isn't just a "hook", it's our way of life. God, Family, Country...at least back in 1980.
USA have 500000 hockey players! Canada have 650000 hockey players! Russia have 80000 hockey players! USA have 6 times More ice rinks and hockey players than Russia! Soviet League goal scoring leaders were in 1980 Shalimov 34 goals Drotzdetzky 31 Varnakov 30 Priodin 27 Lavrentjev 27 Only good Russian was in 1980 olympics Makarov 29! USA had More Ice rinks and players than Russia in 1980! Lake placid had good players like Jari Kurri Peter Stastny Glenn Anderson Neal Broten! NHL points leaders after olympics 1980s were Gretzky Kurri Stastny Anderson Broten!! Broten 38 goals and 105 points in the NHL! Mark Pavelich 37 goals in the NHL! Sergey Makarov had 86 points NHL! USA and Canada should have 15 guys today who have scored over 800 goals like Ovechkin because USA Canada 1,1 million players vs Russia 80000!! Soviets played badly in 1980 olympics against trash Canada 6-4 and Finland was leading 2-1 two minutes to go and Soviet win 4-2!
USA should be 6xtimes favourite over Russia in 2026 olympics but we gonna see and hear miracle stories again!
Finland played for real and wanted to win this final game against USA cause they wanted a medal which the Finnish team had at that point never achieved... But at some point the Americans just found a new gear in the matcht AND won. I saw the game on TV and yes, I'm from Finland. Happy about the Miracle though.
And this clip for some reason downplays the Finns. We are not Norway. We are not Sweden. We won a silver in Calgary 1988, beating the Russian team by 2-1. After that a lot of Championships wins and an Olympic gold later. Not bad for a country with only 5 million people...
Here in Finland we knew every player by name in the Russian team AND if like Krutov got the puck, then it was a goal in a few seconds...For some reason (in Lake Placid) Finland played a really good game against Russia and only lost by 4-2...I remember Sweden boasting after Lace Placid that they also would beat the Russians in the following World Championships 1981 at their home tournament.. The result 13-1... (to Russia oc and the Swedes remain very quiet about this facr, but I bet they will revenge bomb this post). BUT then again Russia was out for revenge after the Olympics.. They wanted slaughter. And check the results after the fact. They got it.
One of the defensemen threw his glove into the stands after beating Finland. Who caught the glove Where is it?
The greatest event in the history of athletic competition; and nothing else even comes close!
There wasn't any media propoganda either at this day and year,,and the Russian were use to propaganda week teams and when they came up against a well trained team, Russians under estimated them
The greatest sports story, game, ever played, ever. It was like Rocky, but in real life.
Greatest Sports moment? Heavens no! Greatest Sports upset? Arguable.
MAGA
We need this real American feeling again!
Bunch of kids beat the so called elite Russian Hockey team. I remember watching this on TV. Awesome game.
hahahahaha really? Hahahahahahahahaha
Imagine how many NFL players can't claim a game of this magnitude. All the players had to do was to go with what was in Herbs heart and they would win. They won because they had the heart of Herb and he won because he is a true American they are too. America is not about a country or land it's about a heart and feeling.
The most wonderful lesson in my life. Thanks mr. Brooks. Thanks, I would have liked to learn how to be a REAL coach from you.
Herb Brooks was Not the Best College Hockey Coach in the Country, that belongs to "Badger Bob" Johnson , head coach at the University of Wisconsin father of USA best player Mark Johnson. After leaving Wisconsin ( with a Number of WCHA and NCCA Hockey Championships, he would coach the Pittsburg Penguins to thr NHL Championship and the Stanley Cup , before passing away from Cancer.. His son Mark is Now the Best College Hockey Coach in the Country, winning over 600 games as Wisconsin Women's Coach and 7 NCAA Championships...
First hockey game I ever saw, on ABC Wide World of Sports on a Sunday. My dad stood next to me and said nothing as we watched the tape-delay version. I still remember some of the goals and the ending. My family started to ice skate because of this game, and my brother and I played hockey for 2 years. Good times!
This game was not on ABC's WWOS.
I never get tired of watching this.
me too. and Jim Lampley looks like he's holding back tears @1:38 and back in the day he broadcast so many huge Events.
Come on! Soviet Russian league goal scoring leaders were in 1980 Shalimov 34 goals Drotzdetzky 31 Varnakov 30 Priodin 27 Lavrentjev 27 Only good Russian was in 1980 olympics Makarov 29 goals! Canada and USA should have 15 guys who have scored over 800 goals like Ovechkin today! Lake placid 1980 had good players like Jari Kurri Peter Stastny Glenn Anderson Neal Broten! NHL scoring leaders after olympics 1980 were Gretzky Stastny Kurri Glenn Anderson Neal Broten! The Hard truth is that Soviet Could score 6,5 goal against young USA! Soviet beat before olympics 10-3 and Lost 3-4 in Lake placid! Good will games in 1990 was the Same story 10-3 3-3! Soviet scored 6,8 goals against Finland 1970-1980! Miracle on ice or Gretzky did not made hockey popular In the USA! Stanley Cup tv ratings In 1980 4% Nielsen! Stanley Cup in 1997 had Same rating 4% Nielsen rating! Neal Broten scored 105 points 38 goals NHL! Mark Pavelich scored 37 goals NHL!! USA had More hockey ice rinks and hockey Players in 1980 than Russia!!
😂
Chills, goosebumps and tears. All these years later.................. love it.
USSR si stronger
Imagine a National Team of today actually playing FOR their country like those guys did! And yes, I am looking at you Women's National Soccer.
#9 for the commies in the 1st period was just amazing. He tapped the puck out, then got in a position to deflect it for a score. All within 2 seconds. Amazing. AND WE BEAT THEM! OC, Baby! #17
to define the US by a hockey game shows how simple minded the people are and in fact tens of millions elected trump and likely will again - asses
Revenge for basketball 72?
"Do you believe in miracles?" Perhaps the greatest line in sports announcing history.
Watch how on Russias first goal...how the puck. Like explodes off the American stick for no.reason at all ... i.mean check it out. Russian.mistque ??
After defeating the Russians, the US still had to defeat Finland. Win - they get the Gold Medal. Lose - No Medal at all. Mike Eruzione retells Coach Herb Brook's locker room speech at 6:26 - Quite probably the Greatest 2 sentence Inspirational Speech in History ...
It was not that clear with a loss. USA might still get silver or bronze. Only if USSR and Sweden tied, and Finland won USA by a clear margin, only then USA might slip out of medals. All teams would have three points with 1-1-1 record and then it is up to goal differential. Even if USA lost to Finland, and later on final day if Sweden or USSR won their match, winner of that game gets gold, with USA and Finland with similar record finishing 2nd and 3rd. It was a round robin medal round, something that not many people understand.
3 of 3 hockey
I lived in Mpls. in 1976-80. Attended a number of pre-Olympic games played at the Met Center. Was an avid Gopher hockey fan for years. Went to at least 2 games a year for the previous 4 years. Herb was a good coach. Not likable by his players, but he was a known winner. It's not surprising he chose 12 native Minnesotans for the team. He knew them. He knew he could count on them. What a journey. Glad I was able to experience it
The number of Minnesota players was absolutely a function of about 8 players turning pro early. G - Steve Baker - Mass D - Rod Langway - Mass D - Richie Dunn - Mass D - Gordie Roberts - Mich F - Tom Gorence - Minn F - Joe Mullen - NY F - Chris Nilan - Mass F - Mike McDougal - Mich So about 5 Minnesota, 1 Michigan 1 Mass and 1 Wisconsin player would have been cut. Janaszak, Verchota, Schneider and Harrington along with Drunk one and Wells. G Baker\Craig D - Langway- O'Callahan Roberts - Morrow Dunn - Baker C Johnson Pavelich Broten Christian W Mullen McClanahan Christoff Silk Cox Gorence Nilan McDougal
Drunk one,lol s\b Eruzione.
@@KMK7355 your source? Name your source. None of these players you named even attend tryouts. And none of them would have lasted Brooks brutal conditioning Live in your make believe world ..... THEY NEVER PLAYED IN THE OLYMPICS AND HAVE NO GOLD MEDALS SO FUCK OFF....... LOSERS
@@KMK7355 a function of your imagination.... I see a bunch of "Bawstin" greedy fucks afraid to compete for the team. Selfish motherfuckers who can't wait a year for personal gain to pursue a patriotic goal. Typical New Englanders thinking only of their own greedy interests and too chickenshit to even attend a tryout. How chickenshit can you be Then you have the fucking ignorant gall to make some moonshot allegations that these guys were shoe-ins? How arrogant. How ignorant. How delusional. Bawstin sucks. And their loser greedy chickenshit hockey players couldn't muster the patriotism for one year to pursue a on e in lifetime opportunity to play for America. Chances are that when Herbie would ask who they played for..... They'd scream "Bawstin" while everyone else says USA..... LOSERS
My parents got to watch this live at a neighbors house who had a powerful antenna and was able to get the CTV feed. I was at RIT and in my room when I heard on the radio we won and I ran down the hall and was immediately told to not say anything as to not ruin it. So we all huddled in front of the TV in Gibson-H lounge and I was the only one who knew we had already won - it was super hard to not give it away during the tape delay broadcast and at 11 PM the entire campus went absolutely nuts both Friday night and then again on Sunday night after we won the gold medal. The celebration Sunday night went way into the wee hours of the morning, for those of you who don’t know - the king sport at the school is Hockey, not football. Every sporting thing at RIT revolves around the hockey team and more recently the lacrosse team so that is why so many people were very much into the games.
The movie Miracle omitted Herb's best pregame speech, in my opinion. Talk about a coach knowing exactly what his team needed to hear when they needed to hear it.
1980 wolf pack !!
Why the USSR did NOT pull their goalie for an extra attacker at the end of that game is one of hockey's great mysteries. Perhaps they had never been in that position - losing in the closing moments of a game...
THAT WAS A GOOD DAY
I understand that the SOVIET TEAM are a poor horse tramin ice hockey team in the winter Olympic but the UNITED STATES dominating the summer games just look at metal count
