I was working as an electrician through out the olympics doing everything and anything just a few days before I was hanging light fixtures in the mezzanine of the Field house then I found myself assigned behind the USA goal camera for the greatest game ever that I'll never forget, at the end of the 1st period the heat went out in the Russian locker room and I had to reset a breaker there to get it back on the KGB escorted me every inch of the way stood but thanked me for fixing the heat and gave me a 1980 summer Olympic Mockba (that we boycotted) solid gold lapel pin that I cherish to this day, then I went back behind the camera.

I’ll never forget the feeling of that weekend. Where ever I went there was such a feeling of pride and patriotism and when they won the Gold medal there was yelling and horns blasting. So great. USA have 500000 hockey players! Canada have 650000 hockey players! Russia have 80000 hockey players! USA have 6 times More ice rinks and hockey players than Russia! Soviet League goal scoring leaders were in 1980 Shalimov 34 goals Drotzdetzky 31 Varnakov 30 Priodin 27 Lavrentjev 27 Only good Russian was in 1980 olympics Makarov 29! USA had More Ice rinks and players than Russia in 1980! Lake placid had good players like Jari Kurri Peter Stastny Glenn Anderson Neal Broten! NHL points leaders after olympics 1980s were Gretzky Kurri Stastny Anderson Broten!! Broten 38 goals and 105 points in the NHL! Mark Pavelich 37 goals in the NHL! Sergey Makarov had 86 points NHL! USA and Canada should have 15 guys today who have scored over 800 goals like Ovechkin because USA Canada 1,1 million players vs Russia 80000!! Soviets played badly in 1980 olympics against trash Canada 6-4 and Finland was leading 2-1 two minutes to go and Soviet win 4-2!

And this clip for some reason downplays the Finns. We are not Norway. We are not Sweden. We won a silver in Calgary 1988, beating the Russian team by 2-1. After that a lot of Championships wins and an Olympic gold later. Not bad for a country with only 5 million people...

  • @ZoolGatekeeper

Here in Finland we knew every player by name in the Russian team AND if like Krutov got the puck, then it was a goal in a few seconds...For some reason (in Lake Placid) Finland played a really good game against Russia and only lost by 4-2...I remember Sweden boasting after Lace Placid that they also would beat the Russians in the following World Championships 1981 at their home tournament.. The result 13-1... (to Russia oc and the Swedes remain very quiet about this facr, but I bet they will revenge bomb this post). BUT then again Russia was out for revenge after the Olympics.. They wanted slaughter. And check the results after the fact. They got it.

It was not that clear with a loss. USA might still get silver or bronze. Only if USSR and Sweden tied, and Finland won USA by a clear margin, only then USA might slip out of medals. All teams would have three points with 1-1-1 record and then it is up to goal differential. Even if USA lost to Finland, and later on final day if Sweden or USSR won their match, winner of that game gets gold, with USA and Finland with similar record finishing 2nd and 3rd. It was a round robin medal round, something that not many people understand.

My parents got to watch this live at a neighbors house who had a powerful antenna and was able to get the CTV feed. I was at RIT and in my room when I heard on the radio we won and I ran down the hall and was immediately told to not say anything as to not ruin it. So we all huddled in front of the TV in Gibson-H lounge and I was the only one who knew we had already won - it was super hard to not give it away during the tape delay broadcast and at 11 PM the entire campus went absolutely nuts both Friday night and then again on Sunday night after we won the gold medal. The celebration Sunday night went way into the wee hours of the morning, for those of you who don’t know - the king sport at the school is Hockey, not football. Every sporting thing at RIT revolves around the hockey team and more recently the lacrosse team so that is why so many people were very much into the games.
