Virginia Rail Foraging in Maine
I was able to get some nice video of a Virginia Rail foraging in a marsh on our property in far northern Maine. The rail was calling from the marsh, and I was able to capture some great footage of it as it poked in and out of the reeds while it was feeding. Rails are a very secretive and are more often heard than seen. © 2024 Garth McElroy.

Logging for Habitat Improvement (Clark Skidder)
zhlédnutí 395Před 3 měsíci
I'm going to be posting some videos from our property in far northern Maine over the next few months. The property is 225 acres and was once a large farm that produced potatoes and grain in the early 1900s through the 1970s. It has since been abandoned, and we are working on restoring several different types of habitat throughout the property. These habitats include grasslands, spruce/fir fores...
Canada Lynx Eats Deer in Maine
zhlédnutí 881Před 7 měsíci
I've always had a fascination with wild cats. Especially Canada Lynx. Luckily, Maine is home to a healthy population of lynx. That being said, filming one, or even seeing one, is not the easiest task. I spent a lot of time in the dead of winter sitting in my blind waiting in below 0 temperatures. But, it paid off and I was successful on two mornings with two different lynx. I'm looking forward ...
Brush Hogging for Habitat
zhlédnutí 297Před rokem
A couple years ago my wife and I purchased a large old farm in far northern Maine. There are several large old fields on the 220 acres that have been fallow for 30 years. Our goal is to restore some of these fields that once produced potatoes, into grassland. The grassland will provide habitat for bobolink, kestrels and other grassland species. They will be managed with delayed cutting in order...
Indigo Bunting Nest in Maine
zhlédnutí 5KPřed 3 lety
I filmed this indigo bunting nest on the edge of an old sandpit in the spring of 2020. Indigo buntings can often been found in overgrown areas such as old fields, sand pits, clearings etc. This female constructed her nest in a thick area of raspberries and it was well protected from predators. She successfully raised her brood and all the chicks fledged. Don't forget to subscribe and hit the be...
Red-eyed Vireo Nest in Maine
zhlédnutí 3,5KPřed 3 lety
My wife discovered this red-eyed vireo nest on the edge of our property. The nest was placed about 15' above the ground and required some scaffolding construction in order to film it. Even though red-eyed vireos are very common around here, this is the first nest I've seen. The chicks grew and fledged quickly on the diet of large caterpillars the adults were feeding them. Enjoy! © 2020 Garth Mc...
Nesting Lincoln's Sparrow in Maine - 4k
zhlédnutí 2,2KPřed 4 lety
Lincoln's Spaarow is an uncommon breeder here in Maine. I typically find them in regenerating spruce/fir clear-cuts that have mossy/boggy ground cover. Their nests are extremely difficult to find and I was very fortunate to find this nest after I almost stepped on it. I had been observing a female that was acting "nesty" but couldn't quite find the nest. The nest was very well hidden and buried...
Bald Eagles Eating Carrion - 4k - Graphic
zhlédnutí 19KPřed 4 lety
I filmed these bald eagles feeding on a dead white-tailed deer near my house. Eagles will often follow ravens in search of an easy meal and they will feed together. This particular deer had at least 30 ravens and 4 eagles feeding off of it. It only takes a matter of days until the carcass is skeletonized. Filmed with a Blackmagic Ursa Mini 4.6k and a Nikon 500mm f/4 ai-s lens. © 2020 Garth McElroy
Northern Maine - Amish and Waterfowl - 4k
zhlédnutí 4,5KPřed 5 lety
The Northeastern corner of Maine is a truly special place. This vast area of land is a mix of agricultural fields, rolling hills, rivers and lakes and northern forest. Potatoes are the primary crop grown here, but broccoli and cereal crops are also grown in abundance. Several towns are home to a large and thriving Amish community. They can be seen working their fields and travelling the roads w...
Small Stream Rainbows in Maine
zhlédnutí 1KPřed 6 lety
Maine offers a nearly endless amount of fishing opportunities. From big rivers and lakes to small streams and ponds. Recently my friend Nate Hicks of Fishbone Metal Works and I hit up a small stream in search of wild rainbows and native brook trout. The fish weren't huge, but they were plentiful and the scenery was fantastic. © 2017 Garth McElroy / McElroy Productions
Cliff Swallows Feeding Young - 4k
zhlédnutí 18KPřed 6 lety
I'm fortunate to have a friend who has a thriving cliff swallow on his farm. I recently spent a morning filming the birds tending to their young in the barns. Several of the nests had young of different ages which is evident in these clips. If you look close, you can see all the insects in the adult birds beak when it returns from foraging. I shot most of these clips in slow motion to help with...
Northern Waterthrush - 4k
zhlédnutí 14KPřed 6 lety
Northern Waterthrush are a common species of warbler around forested wetlands here in Maine. But they can be tough to see since their prefered habitat tends to be very thick and wet. It's not often I catch one out in the open so I took advantage of this guy! Filmed with a Blackmagic URSA Mini 4.6k and Canon 100-400mm. © 2018 Garth McElroy www.mcelroyproductions.com

I’ve been trying to figure out which bird is making this beautiful sound. I hear it just before dark near a hiking trail in Tennessee. It echoes in the Mountain area. Beautiful.

Has a distinct, almost metallic, sound. Hearing it reverb across the lake as you paddle back before dusk can even make it eerie. Almost like a robot bird haha Nature is amazing!

We saw one of these on our tent platform when we camped at the amusement park. It came down to eat catkin seeds. It hopped around, chirped, ate seeds, hopped over to the fire ring and ate graham cracker crumbs from our s'mores while I watched and my friend was in her tent. It was fairly bold and so cute!

What a beautiful bird song. I had never heard such a melodious bird song. I was so surprised to find out it was a sparrow. Believe it or not, I heard and saw it for the first time not in a wooded area, but in a big city. I discovered the white throated white sparrow in Chicago in the beginning of May.
