Love Dr. Black's brilliance!
Give them their gawd back!
41:00 Black formalism defined. Formal rituals (mostly in churches but to speak to it vs. black informal culture). To get the full scope of black culture (Part 2). An internal sense of dignity (shaking hands with elders; oratory lessons) 42:53 Perrry counters youth claiming we are practicing respectability politics. 45:25 Perry gives a detailed account of the anthem across decades and sea changes politically 48:00 Politician Bill Clinton knew all three verses but Black folks did not in one account in the book 50:00 Associational life used to be pervasive in communities of struggle. Now that we are not networked it hurts us more and rituals are not present as a result. People don't do anything together on a regular basis. 51:00 discussing the pandemic's impact 52:50 We like to talk a lot about what's wrong with us (Pathologies). How do we restore our habits of being together? 53:00 Greatness emerges in community 55:00 Sean asks how Perry moderated the panels at the book fest without notes. They wrap up speaking about being present in interviews (no notes).
14:26 Journals written by Black educators. Searching for graduation ceremony papers...to learn about the anthem. 16:52 9,000 pieces of info contributed to the book (sorting out the research process) 19:06 What was on the cutting floor of this book that didn't fit in? Visual art, images, etc. 22:44 Biography broken down on the brothers James Weldon Johnson (1871-1938) and J. Rosamond Johnson (1873-1954), the Stanton school in Jacksonsville, and NAACP and the thought the the anthem was lauded by them in 1919. Black people had already adopted the song decades earlier. Black women's orgs are pushing the song out to communities. 25:00 Why isn't Rosamund known as much. He's a musician. 25:30 Zora on James Weldon Johnson "the whitest black person" she'd ever met. 28:07 Story about Zora Neale Hurston at Sterling Brown's house 30:00 Segregated schools and the best education before integration. 33:22 Black teachers sacrificed for desegregation knowing that they were gonna lose something for what they would offer Black ppl in the nation at large 35:00 The importance of schools (not just churches) in community/institution building 36:20 Black press -- thousands of outfits. This was the opportunity for us to write ourselves and our stories into history. They press began before Emancipation. 39:00 Pullman Porters, Chicago Defenders. They in the fields scooping up newspapers and reading together. Booker T Washington...they wanted to read so bad. Perry: With all the book bans and hostility towards black lit, but in enslaved times, despite it could lead to death, reading was a way to practice being free.
