Meekness and Majesty :The Mark of Christ and His People
Meekness and Majesty :The Mark of Christ and His People (Geoff Thomas)
Rev. Geoffrey Thomas has been the minister of Alfred Place Baptist Church in Aberystwyth, Wales, since 1965. Born in 1938 in Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan, he became a Christian as a teenager in his home church, the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Hengoed, in 1954. After grammar school, he read Biblical Studies, Greek and Philosophy at Cardiff University (BA, 1959). He found fellowship in the Inter-varsity Fellowship group, and was influenced by the ministry of Dr Martyn Lloyd-Jones, and reading books such as J. I. Packer’s Fundamentalism and the Word of God, Whitefield’s Journals, Lloyd-Jones’ Studies in the Sermon on the Mount, and J. C. Ryle’s Holiness. At this time he also began to take The Banner of Truth magazine, which he has since served as Associate Editor. He preached for the first time in 1959 and ‘thenceforward Sunday after Sunday’. In 1961 he travelled to the United States to study for three years at Westminster Theological Seminary, Philadelphia, under men such as Edward J. Young, Ned Stonehouse, John Murray, Cornelius Van Til, Meredith Kline, Norman Shepherd, Jay Adams and Edmund Clowney. Returning to Wales after graduation (M.Div, 1964), he married Iola, ‘the girl back home’. Assured during the last months of his course at seminary of the call to preach, he began his first and only pastorate at Alfred Place the following year. Geoff has systematically preached the Bible to his congregation ever since, and has published the compete text of almost a thousand sermons on the church’s website. He has served as the chairman of the Grace Churches of England and Wales, and of the Association of Evangelical Churches of Wales, and is currently Editor of the Trust’s website articles. He is the author of scores of articles and several books, including The Holy Spirit, Daniel: Servant of God Under Four Kings, Philip and the Revival in Samaria and Ernest Reisinger: A Biography, as well as the booklet Reading the Bible, some of which have been published by the Trust. He is a frequent speaker at conferences throughout the world, and is a Visiting Professor of Historical Theology at Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids, Michigan. In 2011 Westminster Seminary awarded him a Doctor of Divinity degree. Geoff’s wife Iola passed away in October 2016, passing, as Geoff wrote, ‘from the state of grace to the state of glory’. Geoff has two daughters who are married to deacons and a third who is a pastor’s wife. He has eight grandsons and one granddaughter.

IF YOU ARE FELING DESPEARTE, HOPELESS OR DISCOURAGE AFTER LISTENING TO THIS, PLEASE READ: I like many teachings from John Piper and I agree on many things he says. However, when it comes to his conclusions with many of the statements in Hebrews I cannot agree with him. He also teaches about Hebrews 12 in regards to the example the author gives with Esau, selling his birthright, which I think relates very much to what is said in Hebrews 6:4-8. Piper says that the author meant that Esau wanted to repent but he couldn't because he was hardened and although he tried to repent he couldn't. When I heard this from Piper I just fell into so much hopelessness, because I was struggling with sin and seemed like I couldn't win, so I just made the conclusion that I was just a lost case. But what was confusing to me is that Piper also teaches that it is God who grants repentance, so I just thought "God just don't want to restore me, He is not interested in me Being restored". But guess what? Today I enjoy a joyful life that comes from a close relationship with God, my heavenly father and are being restored. Do I struggle with sin, yes. However I understood that the struggle does not mean lack of repentance, but the lord want me to learn to fight! resist! But relying only on the power of his grace! Later on I meditate on that example of Esau in hebrews. I went and read the true story and I could see that in fact Esau repented! He repented of the fact that he gave no importance about the blessing from his father and is right as a firstborn son. He repented because he truly wanted the bless from his father, but that bless was already taken by Jacob. So how do we fit that example today for us, to avoid making the same mistake? We have the entire life the chance to repent, to let the word of God produce that fear that comes from these passages for that is their intent, to awake us and drive us to make a decision. But there will be a time when repentance won't be possible, when our life ends, cuz after that comes the judgment, and this is what I understand from the example of Esau, of someone that prefers his sin and the life they want more than God. Friend if you read these passages and you have this fear, act upon that but with courage and hope! Knowing that it is the spirit that is producing this fear on you to get you out of this place far from God and run to him! We now he will receive you with mercy! And don't think that your struggle with sin means you have not repented. Demonstrate you have repented by striving to fight that sin! First Relying on God by looking for him every day! Search for his presence spend time with him knowing how much you need him. If you fall in your sin again, Get up!!! and keep on fighting!! You need to understand that if you decide to make war against sin God is on your side! He is not arms-crossed looking at you waiting to see if you would be able to handle it. He knows we are weak he knows we are incapable, he is just waiting for us to realize that and run to him for grace. Be encourage my friend!! I would be really concern if someone reads the warnings in the bible without being moved in anyway, but if you felt uncomfortable, frighten and something moves in you that is your faith! you know what you're reading is real, you believe. God is trying to save you to free you through the truth of this word. Though they are really hard to read and hits you like a train, know that it is there because God loves you and want to awake you to run back to him, not just to let you know you're a lost case. Believe me my state was horrible! Claiming to be a Christian but involved in drugs, prostitutes, addictions, and many more things. I suffered the consequences but God still showed me mercy and restore me, he has glorify himself through my life, and he is willing to do the same with yours. If you want to repent, and we understand that true repentance is from God, we know for sure that the very desire to repent comes from God, so he is working in you by the very fear the warning produces in you. To say that some want to repent but can't is contradictory in this sense. the text says it is impossible to bring them back, not impossible for them to repent, so it is people that just don't want to repent, that have not intention to amend their ways, people that made the decision to take Jesus as a liar, as those who crucify him that the text is talking about. if you want to repent, if you want to come back to God, that is a wonderful work of the Spirit, in that I agree with Piper. But to say that repentance is from God but then say that some will have that desire to repent (from God) but can't is not what is shown here. As I state previously, Esau truly repented the fact that he rejected the birthright blessing from his father, but it could not be given to him cuz it had been given to Jacob already, so even if he wanted it, it had been taken already. If we expect to receive the amazing blessing that we are offered through Jesus after we lived a life of rejection towards Jesus, when we realized the opportunity has been lost at the day of judgment, we will repent, truly repent with tears, but the opportunity shall be ended. So if you are still alive, if you still reading these warnings and feal that fear, just as hebrews 3:15 says: Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts. Today is the day you can comeback to God knowing that he is calling you to do so, if you accept know that you will be able to repent for it is He working in you that repentance.

Amen. Also they'll insist on keeping the sabbath in a way that they demand and keeping the dietary laws of Moses. A Christian is under Christ Jesus who is above Moses. We are never to be under Moses. We are in a new covenant, not a renewed covenant. They sin by adding to God's word. The Judaizers really attacked the Galatians and Paul had to deal with it. They even bewitched the Galatians in Galatians 3:1. We cannot be saved if we FALL from grace. This is the doctrine of devils and how many are departing from the faith! (1 Timothy 4:1-5) Galatians 5:4 King James Version 4 Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace.

Yes! There was the young man in Proverbs who was warned not to enter the house of the wicked woman. Her floor "inclineth" unto death ~ like a sliding board. This walk, stand, and sit, sounds like a slow progression toward evil. The second psalm is the Proton Psalm. The ignorant in this wayward world want us to think that word "proton" is an error. They are always looking for mistakes. Our journey can be described as walk, stand, sit. We are the elect drawn toward the Proton by cords of love. When we come close to Jesus on his throne, we sit at his feet. Some kingdoms have prime ministers. Some have a premiere. Some have a first family. Mary of Bethany chose to sit at Jesus feet. I think it is amazing that the electon (ελεκτον) is drawn to the Proton (πρωτον.)

‭1 Timothy 6:3-21 If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness; he is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself. But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and raiment let us be therewith content. But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses. I give thee charge in the sight of God, who quickeneth all things, and before Christ Jesus, who before Pontius Pilate witnessed a good confession; that thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ: which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen. Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy; that they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate; laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life. O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called: which some professing have erred concerning the faith. Grace be with thee. Amen.

I respect pastor Piper, but by his very logic, no man can truly know they are saved. God’s Spirit can work in them, enlightened them, penetrate him, move in them, convict them, be moved in them mightily under the influence of the word of God, and still the believer can never be assured of Christ’s saving grace. The Spirit of God does not tease. He is received by faith (Eph. 1:13), but He could be lost by continual sin (Psalm 51:11). Please be careful calling God a “liar” based off your interpretation of the text. In the case that you are wrong, this is a very scary statement, pastor. Do not forget that the entire New Testament warns the believer about deceptions, falling away, false teachers, love of the world, etc. if there were no threat, there would be no warning. Additional references: Proverbs 2:7-8; 11-15; 17; 19; 20-22; 4:5-6; 9; 14; 18; 25-27 Matthew 13:21-22; 24:24 1 Timothy 6:9-10 2 Timothy 4:10 Hebrews 2:1-3; 3:14; 6:6; 10:26 James 5:19-20 Revelation 2:7; 10; 17; 26; 3:10-11; 3:21

I was essentially alone for 2 full years. I have never quite recovered from that. There's been no repentance from churches for what they did to their people during that time.
