ILCA/Laser Upwind sheet drop practice, 9/2/2024

LCA/Laser Practice Footage - 9/2/2024, San Francisco Bay The wind was around 16 knots. I was frequently advised, “Your hiking out is reasonable, but you need to use more sheet.” As a result, the focus of this practice session was on releasing the sheet when hitting waves or when experiencing strong weather helm. Given that this was the practice objective, I tried it very frequently, which likel...

Sometimes I have had problem that my mainsheet got caught on the boom end when I gybed. This does not happen too often, but did happen at a critical moment during the race, which was disastrous. It's been 25 years since I've been in a radial, but do you think a little more vang would've made the boat easier to keep flat and steer the waves? I recall people cleating the main and pushing the boom with the foot to get more tension which releases the leach to depower and the boom moving more laterally rather than up then out when releasing the main. I imagine the techniques could've changed in the mean time and perhaps ilca 6 and ilca 7 get sailed differently but I'd be curious if there are any experts that have a similar opinion.

      @toshinaritakayanagi Před 12 hodinami

      Thanks for the comment. I agree that the tighter boom vang can help in strong wind upwind, especially if we are dropping the sheet. This is still true i the modern sailing technique. In this footage, I think my vang was set to 93% of my max setting. I could have pull it further a bit, but in this practice I left some room, as the max vang makes the tacking very challenging (boom becomes very low). I remember the old days when we could only use 3:1 vang, and we needed to pull the vang as you described. Nowadays, thanks to the modern vang system with 15:1 ratio, we do not need to do that any more. Still, for me who is not so physically strong, pulling the vang to the max setting is challenging thing to do.

    • @toshinaritakayanagi
      @toshinaritakayanagi Před 7 dny

      I think “173cm, 70kg” would be almost ideal for the radial. I heard Anna Marie Rindom, one of the top ILCA6 sailors, telling “ideal weight for radial is 67kg if you are fit, 70kg if you are not so fit.” I think this would be a top level athlete statement, but I think 70kg is good. In Masters group (over 45 years), I think the ideal weight for radial is 75kg as we are not so fit and not young. I am 167cm 65Kg, so I am a bit too short and too light.

      @toshinaritakayanagi Před 9 dny

      Thank you very much for the comment. Mine also gets the spay that crowds the view, just like this footage. However, if mine looks better, a couple of things I can think of are: (1) I coat the lens with Rain-X water repellant before I launch, though I am not sure if it has any positive effect. (2) My camera setup is shown here: toshinari.blogspot.com/2022/08/laserilca-on-board-came-setup.html I use a relatively long pole for the camera mount, which might be making the camera position higher above the water, possibly reducing the spray hitting the lens? (3) I use Max Lens Mod, which has a curved surface. This curvature might be helping in reducing the water droplets sticking less to the lens?

      @@toshinaritakayanagi At least how I see it, the roll happened the moment you let the sail out past 90 degrees. Letting out the sail like that may have caused a change in how the direction of lift being generated by the sail affected your direction and balance point, causing said lift to push the head of the sail to windward, rolling the boat on top of you. WIth the head being the furthest from the boat's centre of mass it lets it dictate what the boat's gonna do quite easily. In those situations, might be worth getting in the habit of shifting your weight in the boat more/even further leeward (depending how extreme you need to balance it) at the same time as letting the sail out in that context as anticipation for the change in balance. Could be wrong tho!

    • @toshinaritakayanagi
      @toshinaritakayanagi Před 2 měsíci

      @@thelongone3218 Thank you very much for the feedback. I was probably already unstable with loose vang and sail too far out for the angle. Then, the sheet ease was perhaps the last straw as you mentioned, tipping the balance point strongly.

    Your not a true #ilcalasersailor until you've missed the hiking strap and flipped backwards out of the laser. At least it wasn't going around the windward mark and everyone runs in to you like I did at the last masters regatta! Love the rating(10's) across the board, nice touch on the edit, lol.🙌😁 #ISA is the best!

    I get concerned when I see this because of potentially falling on the daggerboard but looks like it was a clean splash.

      I see. I can also see this could have been potentially dangerous, but I am glad that we were all just able to laugh at it when we reviewed the original video with our coach. I have done this a few times in the race course when tacking, so did many sailors, but this was a rare case that the camera could capture the moment.

      @@toshinaritakayanagi Ex-laser sailer. Having done the "Korbut" flip myself many times missing the hiking strap. The risk of hitting the daggerboard is very low. The daggerboard is well forward of the cockpit.

    次に何かが起こるのかと待っていたら、ただ横になっているだけなんですね。キツそうに見えないけど実際は大変だよね。きしだなおこ

      そう、上体をなるべくボートの外に乗り出して、風で倒されそうになるボートを水平に保つわけ。実際はきついのよ💦

    Windward boat was not given time to keep clear imho.
