A wee excerpt from my diary with a short film typa vibe lol. It's the little things the Lord does for me :) As I’m growing in my faith, I’ve been learning that solitude isn’t exactly the greatest :/ I knew God could use people, but could never seemed to relate that back to my life. I found myself shutting off from friends and family, and the bitterness in my heart was fuelled. God seemed so far...

I noticed I only studied Korean and French when I did two things. 1) Enrolled in a course and my professor was on my butt about keeping up with my homework. Or 2) I paid for it through monthly subscriptions. Learning for free never worked for me. I need structure, someone to hold me accountable, and I need to feel like I’m wasting my money if I’m not studying. 😂 For Korean, I use LingoPie to watch kdramas for vocab and TTMIK for grammar. For French, I use Duolingo and watch French vlogs. I also like the channel Easy French.

I really like languages too, but for me it has been difficult to learn a third language (my mother tongue is Spanish and English b1 is my second) without having a solid goal like going to the country where that language is spoken or because I need it for working, it seems that liking the sound of the language or wanting to communicate with people isn't enough, but I keep trying, right now I'm trying to learn chinese and French and it's a little bit hard and I don't like the idea of choosing just one language. I also want to learn other languages like Korean, German, Russian, etc.

Remember that making mistakes is the best way to learn. I have so many funny stories, and yeah it can be embarrassing, but I for sure memorized it after making a mistake. I also think maybe be a little more specific than "intermediate." Cuz I made that mistake and...yeah. 😅 I've started learning French this year and I plan to learn Korean in the future! 😊 Currently preparing for the N2 (Japanese), taking professional Spanish classes, working on becoming conversational in Mandarin, and just want to be able to make basic sentences in French. Looking forward to seeing you speak in your TLs! Best wishes to you! Also--I'm part of a group for Black womxn who study languages on FB. We'd love to have you! (BGLL Forum)

However, I rapidly gave up on it I've picked my "formal" study of jap again last year tho and have been loving the journey :)

This is so long (sorry) but I'm subscribing!!! I think at the intermediate level of a language you start getting more honest about what habits you want to continue doing to improve different areas. I've been learning Japanese for about the same amount of time as you've been doing Korean and I think the best thing that I've done to "level up" is make it as enjoyable as possible (with some challenges here and there). Watching vlogs with natural speed and reading books/comics, and games about topics I like (i.e. romance, film and tea/coffee) led me to want to talk more about my interests with others (My goal at the time was to have more conversations to lead up to my trip last year. I would book conversation sessions to fail safely so when I traveled in Japan, I felt more confident even when making mistakes and just experimenting with things I encountered). My vocabulary is also more specialized/personalized now which is cool. There's nothing wrong with revisiting concepts you're fuzzy on but I think continuing to be okay with some ambiguity alleviates the pressure of not being "where you should be". I went in circles for a while not knowing how to even do that rather than experimenting and finding my sweet spot of a challenge and enjoyment. Best of luck to you and I hope your 2024 is successful 🎉

It must be fate that your video was bought to my front page since we have the exact same target languages for this year 💅🏼 great choices! For Korean, I just changed my phone into Korean to get more used to it and to incorporate it into my daily life. I have some Korean friends I used to talk to in Korean but I’ve resorted back to English recently.. I’ve also bought the Ewha Korean textbooks (lvl 2) so I’ll try to study using them, TTMIK and just consuming a ton of Korean content. I was lucky to spend my semester abroad in Korea last year and it gave me a really strong base to continue learning the language. Basically the more immersed you are the more you learn. If I just had a chance I would go abroad again to learn any of my target languages. It is so much easier to be completely surrounded by the language (and also be forced to study it basically). For Chinese I’ve used HelloChinese as my main learning app and I’ve listened to ChinesePod. Trying to incorporate more Chinese into my daily life as well. I also signed up to a course hoping to find support and motivation from there. For French I listen to InnerFrench. My mom speaks Swedish fluently and when I was learning it I was so ashamed of practicing it with her! But I think when I was at my highest level of Swedish I did try to practice with my mom daily. So if you can, have 30 minute sessions with your dad where you’re not allowed to speak English at all. It’s terrifying at first but it’s way more comfortable to do it with your parent rather than a stranger lol. I’ve heard good things about iTalki as well I think, it’s a platform where you can find language teachers to do 1-on-1 video sessions with you! Also something that I try to do is to think in my target language. Even if my inner voice sounds like a 4 year old I still try to do it every day as I’m doing mundane things or thinking about something, for example the next day’s plans. Good luck with your learning journey!

Korean and Mandarin are also languages that I've been learning for a while! For Korean, it's hazy how I broke into that intermediate level exactly, but I did listen to a ton of the free TTMIK lessons (the audio podcasts on their website). Since you already know the basics, you could skim through the levels to see where some content is that are less familiar with. (Also, while their first level or two is so dad-jokey and slow it's a bit cringe, as the levels progress it gets a lot better, and I think you could probably skip a few levels anyways. There is a lot more spoken Korean involved in the latter levels as well, which I think it would be really helpful for your goal of listening and actually understanding instead of blanking out.) Also, if you enjoy Korean variety shows, those usually have a ton of text thrown on the screen throughout the show, so that could be a way to boost your vocab while enjoying the content you like. For Mandarin, by far my favorite resource has been Du Chinese. You have to pay for total access to everything it offers, but they post new stories or articles weekly at each level that are available for several days before going behind the paywall, so you can get quite a bit of use out of it just using the free version. I believe they offer stuff at the beginning level, too, and all you have to do to see the meaning/pronunciation of a word is tap on it. I love it! I only started using the app when I was lower intermediate, so I've never used the beginner content, but if it's anything like the intermediate stuff, it should be pretty good. Best of luck accomplishing your goals!

ooo thank you so muchhh this is so motivating! for Korean i've taken a few language tests online and most hint at low intermediate so i've just decided to "speedrun" a set course from beginner level using King Sejong Institute. i've used a few of their various textbooks here and there so thought i'd give their online course a try :) but yesss i also use TTMIK resources (currently using their reading/comprehension books which i like so far) so will check out their listening resources... and definitely agree on the K-variety shows for vocab! will also check out Du Chinese ty! 감사합니다~~~

It can be really annoying to restart learning a language, as you don't know what level you are and you are hesitant to aim high, as you want to avoid gaps in knowledge and it is too boring starting from the beginning. Try doing some Korean language tests online, even in an App, like DuoLingo, to know where you potentially are. Although, Duolingo is horrible for Korean, I have to admit. My goals for 2024 are - to strengthen my Japanese and maybe do another proficiency exam at the end of the year. Learn German and basic Korean lazily. I want to go from 0 to a simple conversation In German by summer. And no definite goals for Korean. Oh, and slowly start learning Farsi :)
