Simplifying subtraction
zhlédnutí 1,5KPřed 2 lety
Reasoning about subtraction - once the child has understood what it actually means - can allow a column arithmetic problem to be solved mentally. This is an extract from one of four videos made for the new edition of 'Overcoming Dyscalculia and Difficulties with Number' (publication date Nov 2021).

Subtract From 15 (card game)
zhlédnutí 1,2KPřed 4 lety
This is a versatile card game, easy to learn and quick to play, about subtracting small quantities from 15 (or from any other teen number you choose to target). The game is designed to highlight the relationship between addition and subtraction.
Three Subtraction games

These three subtraction games, at three different levels of difficulty, help reinforce the relationship between addition and subtraction. The first two are teaching games: they make use of Cuisenaire rods to develop an understanding of subtraction at the concrete level, while the second also explains and demonstrates the bridging technique as used for subtraction. The third is a card game desig...
Domino Pick-Up Race games
zhlédnutí 1,9KPřed 5 lety
A quartet of games with very simple rules designed to provide practice in mental arithmetic involving very small quantities (up to 12). Two variations focus on addition and two on subtraction. Full written instructions for this game (together with many other free numeracy games) can be found at ronitbird.com
Domino Game: Crossing the Decade Boundary
zhlédnutí 581Před 5 lety
This simple domino game provides useful practice in addition using the bridging technique. It is particularly recommended for anyone who has already learned how to bridge through 10, and is now ready for the extra challenge of bridging through multiples of 10. Full written instructions for this game (together with many other free numeracy games) can be found at ronitbird.com.
Times Tables and the area model of multiplication

If I have to time something cooking I look at my watch and I can't work out when the food will be done. I have to see a clock face or even draw one. Or use my fingers and count out loud. I'm 55.

I was diagnosed last year with ADHD in my 50s and I'm medicated. Dyscalculia symptoms feel very familiar. Over the last 15 years or so I've attended endless adult maths classes and private lessons but little sticks. I can't afford an assessment as on benefits. Do you think any of your books and resources might help? Even though it feels like I've tried everything I'm willing to try anything new. Thank you.

    • @DyscalculiaVideos
      @DyscalculiaVideos Před rokem

If, as you say, the indicators I've flagged up for dyscalculia in this video feel familiar, I am guessing that you are someone who still feels the need to count on their fingers for even single-digit additions and subtractions, cannot remember times tables facts reliably, etc, etc. In which case, the approach that is detailed in my ebook series and in 'The Dyscalculia Toolkit' is likely to be of great benefit to you, provided you are willing to put in the time to work at the concrete level until you've really understood and internalised what is going on. All you need to get started is a copy of my 'Exploring Numbers Through Cuisenaire Rods' followed, when you are ready, by 'Understanding Times Tables'. Both ebooks are, deliberately, priced very inexpensively, and I'd advise you to shop around for a set of the Cuisenaire rods (currently, both Numicon and Amazon are charging almost twice as much as The Cuisenaire Rod Company. You will find more details about buying rods in Chapter 1 of the ebook). If, on the other hand, you are already beyond the stage of finger-counting for every type of calculation, you might be better off starting with the suggestions detailed in later chapter of 'The Dyscalculia Toolkit' or in my second print book 'Overcoming Dyscalculia & Difficulties with Number'. (To help you choose the most appropriate book, you can use the 'Look inside' facility at the bottom of the books page on my website: www.ronitbird.com/books/ .) Whatever you decide, my advice is to start working at the practical stage with manipulative concrete materials, supported by diagrams and sketches wherever they help, and to focus on developing your understanding - step by step - rather than on trying to learn stuff by heart. Attempts to memorise abstract facts can never be successful if there is no proper foundation on which to build. Good luck!

I have just taken my child out of school as he was suffering with bad anxiety, he started to refuse going in. He was always so anxious going into hes maths lesson. After home educating him for 1 month I can see why. He understanding of maths is so low. I brought your book."The tool kit" Everything is falling into place now, I can fully understand hes fear of maths. I have started to teach maths following your techniques, so far it has been a great success.

Question when were trying to close the gap say we have four in a row the dots or the total value don't match for the last one and the tile one over but it does match a tile 2 over can we remove the two tiles to close the gap or can you only close the gap with one tile in the middle or can you close the gap with 2 or 3 tiles in the middle?

    • @DyscalculiaVideos

No, you can only remove a domino if it lies directly between two others that have a matching pattern or the same total.

Oh lord this was me. I’ve never heard this explained so clearly. Every single time I was presented with even a fairly simple addition, I would have to start from scratch counting it. The fact never stuck. It also took me until my late teens (when I started driving!) to have a shaky grasp on right/left, and I remember having horrible struggles to read an analog clock. I NEVER was able to memorize times tables.

I use the area model, too. Visualizing is great but the area model is also conceptually correct even for real numbers. You cannot repetitively add pi times square root of 2, but the product still exists, as the area exists, too.

I am sure my daughter has dyscalculia, so I will have her tested. Two things came to my mind. Firstly, I had the biggest problems with Text/ written exercises in maths, because I read the little story which triggered my imagination and story telling talent (and the respective brain part) but then - which to me seemed all of a sudden - I was meant to do maths. This was always too much for my brain, because I didnt want to leave the thinking area I felt confindent in and which had just been roused only to shut it down and then switch to the maths brain Part which was much weaker and uncomfortable. Also I was completely confused by chemistry at school since letters which I loved and to which I felt a deep connection were used in a "number way". I asked my teacher how it would be possible to use letters for doing math?! This was totally beyond imagination for my brain. Letters yes, maths no. Maths with letters equalled confusion... So I will give my best to try to feel with my daughter. Thank you. :-)

I tend to work with children who are at school and have already been identified as having difficulties with numeracy (I'm a dyscalculia specialist, and my pupils are generally aged between 7 and 14), but younger children could also learn a lot from the first-hand and hands-on experience of playing around with Cuisenaire rods and can enjoy many of my simpler games.

I have been using these rods (I built them myself) for years - now I see that my "invention" is already done by another teacher, too. I tried several sizes and my experience lead to a untit's legth of 15 mm. I use these for all pupils who could be supported by these tools - there is no limit of age. It shouldn't be applied to children who try to eat wood and adults who are trembling with their fingers due to parkinson-disease ;)

This game would work better if the goal was to get a score of a minimum number rather than a maximum number. This is because we want to be rewarded for the REMOVAL of tiles which is the most demanding part of the game. Otherwise we are rewarded for mistakes by overlooking combinations and patterns. As we get a little proficient competing against the clock - timing each session would add some spice.
