My farther was a Australian German POW since being capture on Crete. Their camp was marched EAST. The guards moved them WEST. Then abandoned them. About a week later a British unit appeared and told them to stay where they were and they would have help sent. None arrived. A US unit found them and wihin a day they were on trucks carrying them WEST. He ended up in Paris then flown to England.

Look these are great stories. But this is a visual medium. To tell these stories with one static picture does it, and the viewers a disservice ! To tell a story on this type of medium, you should at least have a slide show if you are not going to post in video format. I know I will have my detractors, but in the end, they know I'm right !

My father was drafted (along with his entire class of boys) and, as Austrians, given the ‘honor’ of being put in the Front lines at Monte Cassino, to “soak off” the first wave of attacks from the Americans and Brits… then the German regulars held that line thru the rest of the war. Of the class of forty, only 3 survived and were immediately provisioned to… Normandy to await D-Day… but a couple of days before his instincts kicked in and he was able to slip behind the lines with the intent of walking all the way back home to Vienna with false papers he had managed to forge. As luck would have it, he was picked up American - kids - just a few days later (because the SS would have probably shot him as a deserter regardless of “papers”) and Das was fortunate to have grown up with hobbies of speaking like “Americans” (not “Brit”) and knew Baseball and Movies… he became invaluable as a translator and ended up being sponsored for CITIZENSHIP of the Country he dreamed about as a kid! Lived in NYC. Longshoreman until night school got him a job as an accountant… but cut short his career to go and “fight for the right side” in Korea… and survived that! He married my mother - who escaped Communism in ‘56 from Hungary - and, as the families knew each other, was obliged to marry her… there by ‘me’ and my brother became 1st Gen American!

The Germans never feared him. The reality was that the Germans mostly ignored Patton in their strategic assessments, it was Monty and Eisenhower that they paid attention to. The German View of Patton below . As Harry Yeide notes, "the German commanders were not impressed by Patton's drive to Palermo, which involved territory they had already given up. Nor were they overawed by the American performance in what he calls "smash mouth" fighting." "The Germans did not track Patton's movements as the key to allied intentions. They never raised his name in the context of worthy strategists." Hence their intelligence efforts were much more focused on people like Montgomery and Eisenhower, because this was the level on which strategic decisions were made." "One piece of the Patton story, however, is pure myth: that Patton was the subject of close scrutiny by the Germans, who anticipated his attacks in fearful admiration. General Patton was not, as his biographer Martin Blumenson wrote in The Patton Papers: 1885-1940, a "hero even to professional German officers who respected him as the adversary they most feared in battle." Nor was he, as Ladislas Farago claimed in his book Patton, regarded by the Germans "as their most dangerous adversary in the field…. For a while the Germans watched the comings and goings of Patton like rubbernecked spectators following a tennis ball at Wimbleton." In fact, for most of the war the Germans barely took notice."

Heinrici (you have to spell it Heinricki) was a master of defense strategy and had defeated the Red Army in five „Autobahn“-battles in the North. But sommer 1944 he was aware that only a retreat could save the a Army Group. An angry Hitler denied any retreat and Heinrici, knowing that disaster was coming, called in sick. Russian operation Bagration smashed the Wehrmacht. Later Himmler was declared Command in the East. That was an intrigue by Göring, who knew that Himmler was a military dilettante and would fail. This story tells the moment when Heinrici retake command in the last phase - the inevitable collapse. His tactic of secretly retreading from the river oder to the heights at Seelow spared the German soldiers to get wiped out by 40.000 pipes of Russian artillery and rocket-launchers in the opening attack and costs the lifes of 60.000 Russian soldiers in a few days. Heinrici had also a legendary meeting with Göring. The final actions and words of all this Nazi-leaders, Göring, Himmler, Goebbels, were revealing their true nature. A warning for every modern human to never follow again such Nazi-monsters.

Watching this video it’s pretty clear that Eisenhower was a good tactical commander but not a strategic one. As in chess you go for the king if that possibility is available and the King was in Berlin. It’s pretty obvious that the fall of Berlin led to the end of the war. A good movie about this is the German movie called Downfall. Churchill had it right.

The Russians never got their deserved credit for the European war. The U.S. had 416,800 military deaths and that includes the Pacific Theater against Japan. Just at Stalingrad the Russians lost over 1 million civilians and over 10 million soldiers by wars end. The Russians also reached Berlin before we did. In hindsight we now know Germany could have never beaten Russia as they had 10 times Germanies population , were finally mobilizing, and all their weapons and munitions factories were east of the Ural Mountains, beyond Germanies reach. The problem with the U.S. not getting involved would likely be Stalin using the defeat of Germany to annex all of Western Europe.

Oh dear oh dear. All those US American comments can be summed up thus " we are god's gift to humanity and the Germans should be grateful that we occupied their country." The reality is quite different. The miserable living conditions and the rigidities of Allied occupation prevented the return to normal economic life. The rebuilding of Germany was necessary for the economic revival of Europe. West Germany alone remained the largest market and the prime exporter of capital goods on the continent. It was the precise aim of the Marshall Plan to mobilise German industrial might for European reconstruction. Then there was the US fear of communism spreading. The Soviets were on the river Elbe. One of the results of the defeat of Germany was the rise of the Soviet Union to become a world power . A power much more dangerous that Nazi Germany ever was. Britain after WWII was in decline and Its empire falling apart. The US needed new allies against the Soviet threat. The only ones that fitted that bill were the defeated enemies. They had to be brought on side. Those were the reasons why the US changed its postwar policies . It needed to assist the defeated enemies to recover to have allies in the potential struggle against the Soviets. There were no altruistic reasons on the part of the US merely reasons of self interest. West Germany and Japan had only two choices play along or starve. Both made a good fist of doing what they were told.
