Beautiful catholic hymn

Prokofiev scored a true classic with this piece, did he not? The animal and instrument pairing, the accompanying music written specifically to engender that animal to the sonic stirring--it's all so perfect. Concise, succinct, straight to the point such that a toddling child to the most attuned aficionado can understand, maintain a deep interest and closeness to, and appreciate the composition at so many different and varying levels. A timeless story combined with quintessential 20th century compositional construction by a musical genius negotiating the years of Stalin, being stricken with such inspiration upon his return to the Rus that he immediately composed the work we have here. I love having the notated score to really hear each of the Invidiul parts, know exactly what they are doing, and anticipate the score as it unfolds.

It's good playing, I have no problem with the low pitch, because it is internally in tune, but the piano really is so unpleasantly muddy. It seems perverse to use instruments that in their time frustrated composers. Authentic does not necessarily mean good. The instrument should enhance and be a vehicle for expression, not something to fight and hinder, simply because it is of the period. Composers have aspirations too! Since one of the most generally quoted justifications of authentic performance is that it makes textures clearer I find it extraordinary that this muddy performance can be admired. Listen to this performance, for example, which is SO much clearer. It's very fine playing from all performers, but what stands out in comparion is chiefly that one can hear detail, and th piano can sing wjhen required. I just saw the students of the Itzhak Perlman winter residency program perform this piece in Sarasota and it was beautiful. I think one of the most moving symphony’s I have ever heard. I agree with others the second movement is special.

The Chord, of course, is gorgeous, but the measure before and the three measures after, are just as crucial. Clever, inventive, jazzy, decadent, unexpected. This is why all choir directors/organists tell the choir “Sing unison on the last verse. If you sing parts, it will sound terrible.”
