Common & Pete Rock - Bullseye with Jesse Thorn
Common and Pete Rock are two of the biggest names in hip-hop. Common is one of the most famous Chicago rappers of all time and Pete Rock is a producer with hundreds of credits to his name: with C.L. Smooth, Run DMC, Public Enemy, Biggie. The list goes on!
These two icons have known each other for a long time, but apart from a diss track back in 96, they never really worked together. Until now! Pete Rock and Common just released “The Auditorium Vol. 1.” The album is a 15 track epic from the two hip-hop heavyweights featuring the vocals of Bilal and Jennifer Hudson.
We get into the album with Common and Pete Rock, discussing the divine influence of producer J Dilla in their collaboration. We also talk about the time Bullseye host Jesse Thorn boo’d Common at a live show in Santa Cruz. Plus, does Common still do windmills at his concerts? Break into the episode to find out more.
You can stream “The Auditorium Vol. 1” now.

For a variety of reasons, I've shifted to mostly engaging with video content (even if it's often in the background) over strictly audio content. So as an early TSOYA fan who in recent years only occasionally listens to the odd Bullseye on a road trip or something, I'm ecstatic you've got video for Bullseye now (as well as Judge John Hodgman). As a sometimes-producer myself, I know it's a lot of extra work, so just know it doesn't go unnoticed or unappreciated!

Im excited to listen to this, ive never heard it before. Joe(the character) may seem at first foolish, naive, unconcerned.. especially beside the very concerned Sarah.. what i came to love about him was his deep appreciation for everything around him. Humble things or activities become so special and savored. It makes me appreciate the gentle repetitions of my own life. Im so bummed season 3 was the last one.

What an interesting and telling interview. I wonder how that impacted the interviewer when he asked if he knew to ask him that. Like he answers with well, I am a professional, and kind of scoffed. I wonder what he meant by that? Was he asked a lot about that maybe? Or maybe he was always afraid someone would bring that up? It seems obvious as a question in retrospect. There are a lot of aspects of BMSR that have that hippie flower acid washed lyrics kind of vibe. Maybe this is what lead to the Tobacco project in general, him not liking being shoe horned in that psychedelic genre. As musicians I think we all struggle with that, people need to know where to put things, and that is inevitably going to get you grouped, while some might hate labels, or feel like they are different than the rest, but at the end of the day it is the sales clerk stocking the album and telling the customer what it sounds like, that makes that call. Thanks for sharing.

But I do think Jack is some kind of spirit animal cousin of mine because we think about the world the similarly.
