Bartolini Classic Bass 3 (Bright) Dual Inline Humcancelling Jazz Bass® Pickup Set Demo
Note: The pickup used for this video is the Bartolini 9CBJD3 L/S, a 4 string pickup. The below 5 string sizes/shapes will sound similar, but not exact as they will use a longer magnet. Bartolini is engineering them to sound as close to each other as possible.

Do yourself a favor - Listen with a decent set of headphones to get the best listen to the audio tracks in the video. Your phone or computer’s speakers are poor, they neuter bass frequencies and are a true compromise in this situation.
CZcams applies compression to all videos, and this does affect the audio quality, unfortunately.
When editing the audio for basses with multiple pickups (Pickups combined Equally, Neck Pickup Only, Bridge Pickup Only), the signal levels have been largely left so that a listener can hear the volume difference between the various pickup positions. This results in certain positions sounding louder than others.

::: Our general feelings about the Bartolini 9CBJD3 Jazz Bass® Pickups:::
Offering even more top end than the 9CBJD (aka 9CBJD L1/S1) set, the ‘3’ version of this pickup is a slapper’s delight. Lots of pop to the top end….almost has an EMG flavor to the top end, while retaining some of the warmth that Bartolini pickups are known for. The bridge pickup jumps out in this test.
As always, keep in mind that these are generalizations. Your experience could be different depending on many factors.

What is the deal with the string spacing on these? From this angle looks like the bridge poles are barely under the string.
Dropped in MiM 5 with a blend and love it
Thanks for the video - really nice sound. (Might be nice to have the original P Bass pickup and then switch it to the Aguilar so we can hear the difference?)
That music is total shit. Lol. That guitar part could not have been any more annoying. Cool pedal though
Sounds really good. What’s your pot and tone cap value?
It’s nice and fat but it has clarity and definition. No muddiness. 👍👍
Can you please suggest the exact OBP variant for Ibanez ehb 1005 bass standard frets version? Also, does the OBP preamp go well with the stock BH2s of the Ibanez ehb?
Does this mean we will get a demo of the b-axis pickups? I’m excited now. I would love to hear how they differ to the 8s and 8cbp. Also what pickup height do you normally set your Bart’s at?
Thanks for checking out the video - At some point we will get a demo of these. Production of b-axis has been light, so we've went long periods where these have not been in stock. During our last demo video shoot, they were out of stock :(
I set most Barts quite close to the strings - roughly 3mm from the bottom of the string with the string held down at the last fret. This is doable on Bartolinis
@@FatBassTone oh that is a shame. Hopefully production on them catches up with demand.
@@FatBassTone oh. This is invaluable information. Cheers for this
@@soulstart89 I agree!
sounds pretty great. bold. sounds a lot like my Suhr pbass. a bit brassy. still experimenting with strings. current set is stringjoy 105s. What are you running there?
Thanks for watching - we used D’Addario NYXL for all of the demo videos :)
These sound really good
So I bought this pick up from you guys and people sleep on this pick up man. This thing sounds great if you have it in the right bass with the right wood combinations. Holy smokes it’s killer
Awesome!
@@FatBassTone yes pickups are one part of the equation. Wood, and the Bridge have lots to do with tone not to mention string choice. If you have higher pitched woods such as: swamp ash and maple. This pickup is the way to go.
Clear and perky! That's how I describe them, I've made a mental note of them.
Thanks for checking out the video - clear and perky, nice description :)
Man fralins have a particular sound. Very 60’s. I don’t know how to feel about these. Not good, not bad. They just are. Great playing as always.
Hi James - They really do have a particular sound, and have quite a loyal following.
They sound like Jazz Bass pickups. If they are suppose to sound different (or better) you should do a side by side comparison with stock pickups. I've been playing and making records with Jazz basses for over 40 years but I am open to hear a difference but this sounds like all my basses that have stock pickups. Show me a difference.
Thanks for checking out the video Les. Point taken - will remember your comment when we start working on some videos to show differences between groups of 'like' pickups (vintage, modern, etc..). One issue with stock pickups is the extreme variance...so it becomes a comparison that is fairly narrow. But, nonetheless, it may be very interesting to hear side by side as you suggest.
They sound rich and full. Very nice. Is that 60s spacing?
Thanks for checking out the video Martin. I agree, rich and full tone with that extra bit of mid range from the overwind. 60s spacing.
Nice pickup...good MM tone, but the OLP needs a set up. A few notes choking out to my ear. Great varied playing as usual.
Hi Keith - Thanks for checking out the video. This bass was far from premium. We purposely went with lower end basses for all of these demos just to showcase pickups in not-so-great instruments, but still able to get good tone. This OLP was a real challenge, and Andy plays with the most aggressive right hand that I have witnessed. This one and the J had some issues.
Very crisp and metallic sound! Love it. Came here from Elliott Sharp’s biography where he writes about putting three of these on a custom 8-string guitar.
Thanks for checking out the video! They are very unique offering from Bartolini....We dig 'em!
Great series of demo videos! But I think it would be better to compare pickups with a dry sound. Those amp sims impart their flavour and not all the pickups respond the same way, I think many nuances are getting lost
Thanks for checking out the video, Maria. We considered doing a dry sound without the amp simulation. It just sounded TOO dry, not a tone most players are used to. Thanks for offering your thoughts though, we appreciate that.
Mk5cbc ?
Hi Diego - Thanks for checking out the video! These are the P25CBC, but tonally they should be extremely similar to the MK5CBC.
Crazy how much better your demo of these pickups sound compared to all the other videos.
Thanks for your kind words my friend!
Now I don't know wtf ro buy lol😊
Ha! Just jump in and get something that sounds good!
@FatBassTone damn it they all sound good! 😆
Goodness man. Delicious bass tone for the ears.
For sure! Thanks for checking out the video :)
Those have a thick tone, nice.
Yep - The overwind increases the mids nicely for a thick, punchy tone.
Really good review. Easy to appreciate the sound. Thanks!
Thanks for your kind words David!
Sounds like this pickup is a bit more polite than the PB63. Both sound incredible as I've come to expect from Kloppmann.
Thanks for checking out the videos :) Agree with your thoughts....it is a bit softer.
Damn thats a thiccccc bassline my guy
For sure! Andy rocks! …and funks, and slaps……
called a couple days ago regarding bass pickups..watching videos and nice samples of pickups..great job but wondering why all videos u have tone wide open..would be cool to have that at say around 50%..
Hi Anthony - Thanks for checking out the videos. It is a real balancing act with keeping these videos concise, showing some styles that meet a wide range of players, and getting the tonal possibilities. Having the tone wide open is, in a way, a universal place to capture the sound. The are enough variances in tone roll off - with the potentiometers, caps, or using preamps - that when devising a format to do these videos, we decided to leave it open. It is certainly a difficult task to capture what everyone would like to hear.
Great playing as always not a fan of Delano anything
Hi James - Will be doing the Delano dual coils in the coming weeks, interested to hear what you think of those.
@@FatBassTone i’m excited can’t wait to hear them however I am a little biased. I only use Kloppmanns I’m probably the only guy or first guy to buy the PJ 57/71 set from you guys. however, I will start being a little bit more open to other brands and everything that I’ve tried from Delano just was subpar, but hopefully I like the dual coils
@@jamesreynolds4487 You are the first to get the PJs :) Having sold these parts since 2003, I have learned that it is truly an individual thing. Moreso than sight, our ears are VERY different.
@@FatBassTone you are 100% right it is an individual thing that’s why I try to refrain from saying stuff is better or worse. For me personally I haven’t liked the Delano stuff. However, that’s only because I tried Kloppmanns and fell in love. So it made other stuff sound “moot.” however this is merely my opinion. I wholly know that there’s other good brands out there.
Sounds kinda like the Kloppmann JB71
Thanks for watching/listening James!
I see they wind each coil to 4kΩ which puts resonant peak around 5KHz similar to old school MM pickups. I had custom made pickups wound to 5KΩ to lower the resonant peak a little for better mids and I prefer the sound of Alnico 5 magnets
Thanks for listening Steve. Kudos to you for digging into the technical side to understand what your ears like!
Excellent pickup, with a wide variety of useable sounds. Thank you for programming the parallel/series sounds next to each other, and using short playing examples. So many demonstrators seem to think that the listener's musical memory will be faithful enough to allow accurate comparison between samples heard five minutes apart. It isn't.
Thanks Paul, I very much agree. We took a look at many of the videos out there to come up with a consistent plan to show these pickups perform/differ. Sometimes I think the 'pick' is just a little too long for the reasons you mention. Thanks for your kind words.
Is are these the DCB D1 pickups please?
Thanks for watching. These pickups in the video are the DCB-D2, which is the 5 string version. The DCB-D1 (4 string version) will sound quite similar - they can't be exactly the same, as the magnets are longer, but quite close. Here is the DCB-D1: fatbasstone.com/products/aguilar-ag-dcb-dual-coil-4-string-bass-pickups?variant=37244863447203
Request Delano SBC5 Soapbar Pickups Demo please
Sure thing. We have it recorded....just need to edit it. Will make it the next one I edit :)
Hi! How do you feel them vs the Delanos?
Thanks for checking out the video. Personally, I like both but for different reasons....The Duncan QP have an aggression and punch that is excellent. The Delanos have a very likable articulation and clarity that is excellent.
@@FatBassTone That’s what I heard in the demos... would you say the SD are more beefy?
@@preciseaudioblog Yeah - They are probably the beefy-ist.
Wow! Sounds fantastic! I upgraded my Squier with SD Quarter Pounders
Thanks for watching! These are great pickups!
Would be nice to hear the MC4 AL for comparison. This was all passive by the way?
Thanks for checking out the video. This was all passive. Will make the MC 4 AL one of the next that I edit...it is recorded, just need to edit.
Freddie Washington endorses this pickup. 👍🏾
Here is an audio demo for this pickup - czcams.com/video/jlpDcgGYGgk/video.html
Thank you, keep up the great work! 😊🙏🏿
You sell fantastic products. Love the precision 63 pickup! 🐐
Thanks for your kind words Trevor. The Kloppmann is pretty incredible :)
HOW do you switch between series and parallel?
Thanks for checking out the video. You can use a toggle switch, or you can hardwire the pickup to the volume potentiometer in either configuration. At the bottom of this pdf, you can see the two hard wired options for this pickup: cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0078/6697/4298/files/Bartolini-PickupWiring4Conductor.pdf?5 On that same document, at the bottom of the 3rd page, you will see the switch wiring for series and parallel
@@FatBassTone How were you switching on your bass? Didn’t spot a toggle switch….maybe I missed it.
@@drbassface It was hardwired via quick connects. We do a run through of all the tracks in parallel, and then a run through of all of them in series. When we are doing demo after demo, and use some quick connects, so we are not soldering through every pickup change.
This is the benchmark for how bass pickup demos should be done. Great playing and feel are on display throughout this review. Well done. How do you feel this pickup compares with its Alnico equivalent - the Delano PMVC 4 AL/M2?
Thanks for your kind words! The PMVC 4 AL/M2 video will be coming in about 2 weeks, so you'll be able to hear it :)
Only thing with active pickups - what happens if they go during a gig?? Take a spare bass i suppose. Youre not going to be faffing with batteries
This is true. Worth it to replace you batteries frequently :). Thanks for watching!
Are these passive or active pickups?
These are active. Thanks for checking out the video
Andy Irvine uses this and other versions in his P behs. Definite keeper.
Indeed these sound great. Thanks for watching :)
Woolly like the Delano pc4tf with a little more umph in the mids.
Paired as a P/J with the jb71 I can see this mixing well
A little bit more cleaner than pc4TF.
Thanks for your thoughts and thanks for checking out the video.
Sounds woolly and a bit scooped.
Groooovy ❤❤❤❤
Thanks for checking out the video :)
For my taste, MM sounded much better with Bartolini...✌🏻
