Armstrong MA800 and HA780

The MA800 and HA780 are my 2 go-to frontwings right now. In my opinion the best two foil quiver for most conditions. I mostly use the surf 205 stab with the MA800 for a stable, controllable and flowy feeling. Also reducerade stall speed and turn well rail to rail. Also use the 140 and 180 with the ma800. Those have better glide and the 140 is faster but less pitch stable. Last session I used th...

The new HA780 has proven to be a very versatile frontwing with a huge wind range perfect for the gusty winds we often get here on the east coast in Sweden. The low stall speed and positive lift response when pumping are great features since it's hard to drop down making it easy to ride allowing me to develop my riding towards being more progressive and trying new stuff. I ran my own Windsurfing school and was experienced in the sport prior to founding it I informed my customers that a gybe was easier to perform than a tack -(Duck gybe)- as it is necessary to duck under the rig as it's swinging, and they agreed with me. Although it's beneficial to know how to gybe and tack both turning motions are important to know prior to getting started in it as then you feel more confident and safer whilst out at sea.

    Hello Stefan. I contacted you earlier with a similar question, but I'm still in doubt. I'm currently windfoiling on my freestyle board, which has been adapted to fit an NP Glide wind foil. I can do jibe, duck jibe and sometimes 360, so I wouldn't say I'm a beginner anymore. I saw on Your channel that you also foiled on ordinary boards. My question is, is it worth buying a dedicated foil board? Is the foiling experience much better? I didn't have the chance to try such a board and you are the only person I know who has foiled both on regular freestyle boards and real foil board. I am thinking of buying JP Free Foil 115 which is very similar to your Wizard. Thank you!

      Only one kite without foil, she had some problems to get the kite up if I remember correctly and also light weight. Most kitesurfers waited on the beach, no windsurfers bothered to even try. Its normally a popular spot. Anyway, there is a windmeter at the spot and it was super light winds so good luck with using a fin. Even if you could plane in a 12 knot gust it would only last a few seconds and you would slog for 10 min waiting for another gust. Edit: after looking at this video again I do say its 3-5m/s wind and a few gusts at maximum 6m/s (=12 knots).

      @@Stefan-Foil I'm a bit curious about this as well. I windfoil and windsurf on a hybrid RRD LTD 155 2023 board and Slingshot Hover Glide FWind V4 2023 foil (has 1534 cm^2 front wing, low aspect)... it seems great, but if I get more into foiling, specifically looking at top speed, is a windfoil specific shorter board better for that also? Especially in light or extremely light winds, 5-10 knots, which is where I see myself foiling the most. Or, to put it a different way, is a "better" way to increase speed to find a higher aspect front wing and possibly other parts on the foil? OR: change to a foil-specific sail? I use freeride or wave sails from Ezzy currently. Also, nice maneuvering in the video, I was not sure about bigger sails as much due to their higher weight, and you seemed to not need the power so much. I may still stick with going big on low wind speeds just to max out on speed / upwind ability and sacrifice maneuverability myself, but interesting to see it's possible. I like 8.5 m^2 in those conditions, me weighing in at 64 kg.

    This is all very interesting mate: smaller sail, smaller front wing, 6 mt/second wind speed....I'd rather talk "knots" normally and would like to know how you did measure that....by anemo-meter or just "nosemeter"? Anyway this seems to be a "miracle" and wuite easy, doesn't it? The real question is what is your weigjt and how long you have been practicing windsurf foiling? Without these two answers, small sails small wing....small wind means nothing to me.

    • @Stefan-Foil
      @Stefan-Foil Před rokem

      Look in the description, I just added my weight, 85kg at the time, (clipp is from last year) There are ways to estimate windspeed by looking at the water state and there is also a windmeter at the spot. I use a big foil but sail is not ideal, I now have a better sail, Severne foil freek, I need even less wind now. Biggest size i need is 5,2. 👌

  • @hammerniko
    @hammerniko Před 2 lety

    Hi Stefan, i am working on the same issue too. At the moment I have reached 28,5kn Toppspeed with the 800 Frontwing from Starboard on the 115 Plus Fuselage with the -1.5 Degree Shim on the 255-2 backwing. My Sail was a 7.0qm Severe M3. My Board is the same as yours. Last times I switched to the smaller Frontwing 650. I pushed really hard, but I didn't reach higher speeds. I think I have to switch to a smaller Fuselage (95, 105) and less Backwing angle (-2)and maybe a smaller backwing. At the Moment I hook out in the strongest gusts because I have not 100% control in the gusts. I think I have to stay hooked in and really sit down in the harness to get more speed. But in gusty conditions this is really hard on the edge. I think that more downhaul like in Slalomsurfing works great for more speed, like in Windsurfing too. Sailtrim and Mastfoot position is very important for me. I always place the Mastfoot way to far in the front for the first speed rides and reduce it step by step till I find a sweet spot. Then I try to ride foil nearly in a slalom position, but more sitting to press the foil down. For me this works and I hope I reach the 30knots soon. But you will need 20+ knots for this.

    • @Stefan-Foil
      @Stefan-Foil Před 2 lety

      28,5 knots top speed is very good with the 800 ving. To go faster I think you need to use much smaller wing and backwing and shorter fuse. I think its easier to push your speed when you are a little underpowered on the foil but with bigger sail to compensate. Then you get more control but not as good upwind/downwind.

  • @crown2548
    @crown2548 Před 2 lety

    Can you please comment on the length of the fuse. The longest I have is a 70cm. I am an advanced windsurfer, and have been foiling with kite and wings for a couple of years. It's very similar to a normal freek. Just a bit lighter with only 4 battens and some other foil specific features, like its more pull and backhand neutral. Compared to my blade wave sails it feels softer and has more power but turns flat when you depower. I think upwind the blade is better and when you sail more powered with smaller foils (race wing). But I really love this sail and can recomend it, I only have a 5,2 but use it like 90% of my sessions. It's very closed in the top but you can still sail in gusty conditions with a big windrange without getting easily overpowered, just pick a size smaller.
