Can you have a deep practice as a lay person? (Hint...yes)
I hope this overview of the Household practice resonates with you. Over the last 30 years I've had different approaches to balancing work and meditation. Changing definitions of what 'work' means; shifts in how I think of 'pracitce'. Fundamental re-alignment of what it means to 'balance' something.

This note in Schumann just feels wrong to play
zhlédnutí 53Před měsícem
There's a note in Schumann's Kreisleriana that just feels wrong. It drives me batty. All editions (save one, watch the video to see which) tell me to play an extra 16th note.....any of you know if there's a digitized version of the original manuscript? And even if, I think Schumann made a mistake here. #schumann #kreisler #composerlife

    Dear Mr. Andrew, while I myself am not a musicologist (just a HIP enthusiast), and thus might be missing important context in this quick search, I went ahead and checked different editions of the Kreisleriana, Op. 16 on the International Music Score Library Project (IMSLP) as well. Interestingly enough there are two more editions in which the pointed out sixteenth note is not there in bar number 27, at least on IMSLP - the "Moscow: Muzyka" edition and one edited by Ray Alston. Apologies this wasn't very insightful, would be lovely to look at the original manuscript (please do share if you find out something more on it). Best regards

    Great Andrew! How do you think Messiaen develops his harmonic progressions?

    • @andrewkaiser
      @andrewkaiser Před 5 měsíci

      Thanks for the comment. I’ve been meaning to put something together answering exactly this question. After working through the full text, I think that the development of progressions comes from his improvisations….i feel this very strongly with music like the Vingt Regards where many of the gestures feel like choreography that he captured from an improvisation. Clearly informed by deep study of modes. It’s one reason I love his music so much is this embedded physicality. What do you think?

    • @claudiomerletloyola896
      @claudiomerletloyola896 Před 5 měsíci

      @@andrewkaiser Could be. I think that by having synesthesia, I approached things different from those that develop in functional harmony. Clearly in mode 1 you can see the influence of Debussy. I have also seen something that performs polymodes of different transpositions, superimposing different modes. It also seems to me that it changes transpositions of the same mode in different places in the same work without difficulty. Even so, I cannot understand how he develops the harmonic-melodic progressions, which I understand for him are linked. I also think that the impressionist influence of not having a so-called rigid speech is something that fascinates me, beyond the fact that it uses classical forms such as sonata form. Anyway, your videos are very useful to me, I greatly appreciate it. My English is not very good. Greetings from Chile.

    I completely understand your question about what Messiaen means by 'resonance superior' and 'inferior'. To be fair I also was rather confused by it… haha The only thing I can think of is that Messiaen makes a distinction between a resonance that lasts longer and is therefore 'better', i.e. superior, and that the inferior resonance achieves that desired effect less well. Of all the examples that Messiaen gives, the pattern can be seen that at the resonance superior, bass notes are played and then (higher) notes are played afterwards. Those higher notes fit more or less into the overtone spectrum of the note in question, so that the resonance of mainly the bass notes continues longer and you also hear the resonance of the higher tones. While with inferior resonance, higher notes are always played first and then a further blow comes from a number of bass tones. This means you hear the bass tones very well and for a long time, but the sound and resonance of the upper tones is a bit drowned out; and therefore this form of resonance is subordinate; inferior to the other form of resonance. I could very well be wrong... but I am curious about your thoughts on the matter

    Andrew, regarding the overtone series that you diagram around 5:10, if the fundamental is C, the 11th overtone is in between F and F#, but it is slightly closer to F# than it is to F natural. Here are the details, assuming an even-tempered chromatic scale. F will have a frequency of 2^(5/12) times whatever frequency C is. The decimal approximation is 1.334839854 . F# will have a frequency of 2^(6/12)..., which has a decimal approximation of 1.414213562 . The 11th harmonic will have a frequency of 11/8 which is 1.375 exactly. If you take the ratio of F and the 11th harmonic, you get a ratio of 0.970792621 . However, if you take the ratio of the 11th harmonic and F#, you get a ratio of 0.972271824 , which is closer to 1. This means that 11th harmonic is closer to F# than F, which means that Messiaen didn't arbitrarily sharpen the F. He chose the note in the even-tempered chromatic scale that is closest to the 11th harmonic.

      Hey thanks for the comment. This chord (and all techniques described in this book) are common in his music written in the 1940’s. Great constellation of ideas. Thank you! As a physicist, my way of thinking about symmetries has to do with group theory, as a language to describe them, but the meaning of symmetry seems to be deeply ontological as a way to restrain possibility and thus allow for an understanding of the necessity of what actually is. Specifically, the basic symmetries of nature given by the special theory of relativity and quantum mechanics, when combined (i cannot resist analogy to the vertical and horizontal being combined in music) prescribe the types of fundamental particles that can exist. So far we have found all but one type, the spin 3/2, which is prescribed by enlarging the symmetries seen thus far to supersymmetry. Thousands of scientists are looking for that in CERN and other places. What I am saying is that this way of thinking about the world of music is perfectly mirrored in the way we think about the world of matter. It is a special convergence and I hope it adds to your constellation. There are many more ideas to be discussed on this topic, for example a method to generalize Messiaen's procedure of combining the vertical and horizontal. Kind regards!
