I think inverse square law is older. Like maybe Euclid. The inverse square law is geometric, because you will look 4 times smaller to me at double the distance. Apparent size is inversely proportional to distance. So maybe the ancients did not say "inverse square law", but I think they understood how surfaces expand out from a point according to those same rules. * all IMO

These do not apply to anything that can't be approximated as a point source. When Gauss' law does not apply the inverse square law does not apply. This is also a vastly simplified concept of how the fundamental physics works. It also assumes that there is no possible restriction to a field, that can cancel out or amplify a signal.
